Shockingly Healthy
Summary: It's not enough to wait until the fight is over to bandage wounds. If you can fight at the side of Heroes, you can try to keep the blows from reaching them. And maybe even protect them from themselves. I am Tac Kirakiraboshi, and I will keep you safe. (SIxFem Kaminari)
Chapter 1
There were some days where I just had to take a moment to ask myself "What the hell am I doing?" Today was one of those days as I stared down a chibi Bakugo Katsuki and his two goons, a beaten chibi Midoriya Izuku laying on the ground behind me. There used to be another kid that Bakugo was picking on first, but the ungrateful brat had ran the moment Bakugo had started hitting Midoriya instead when he tried to stop his friend.
"Get out of the way Kira, I'm not done teaching Deku a lesson." Bakugo said with a scowl.
"And what lesson would that be Bakugo? That you're a jerk? I thought you wanted to be a Hero, but here you are using your quirk on others just because they talked back to you. I've got a news flash for you, that's not the action a Hero takes. That's what a villain does. You and your two goons are nothing more than bullies, and I'm ending this."
Bakugo let out a laugh at my words and said "You?! You're just as quirkless as Deku is, what can you do against us?!" As he spoke, explosions popped in his hands while the kid on his left extended his fingers and the kid on his right grew wings.
I put on a savage grin that I didn't quite actually feel like wearing and cracked my knuckles as I said "I can kick your ass is what I can do." My orange belt in Karate from my previous life didn't go away just because I had a new body. Sure, it was only the third level in that school of Martial Arts, but that was more than what the three kids in front of me had.
Bakugo laughed again before he leapt forward with one hand extended to launch an explosion at me. I grabbed the wrist, swung it down and to the side so that the explosion went off away from me then slammed the fist of my other hand into Bakugo's gut. The kid's eyes went wide but before he could recover, I spun around his side, bringing the wrist I still had with me and threw him over my shoulder onto the ground.
As Bakugo coughed trying to get the air back into his lungs, I turned my gaze to the two goons and brought my grin back as I asked "Care to try your luck you two?"
The two didn't say anything, they just turned and bolted. Giving a snort, I looked at the recovering Bakugo who was getting up to his feet. Glaring at the brat, I said "You try pulling this stunt again and I'm gonna start knocking out teeth, understand?"
Bakugo scowled at me but took off running as well. Shaking my head, I turned back to Midoriya and offered a hand as I said "Here, let me help you up, you going to be alright?"
Midoriya nodded and put his hand into my own. But before I could pull him up to his feet, my Quirk decided to reveal itself. Sparks of electricity appeared on the hand holding Midoriya's and it was suddenly like I had a head's up display, an energy bar with a percentage beside it on the top left corner of my vision, a DNA chain appearing on the top right corner that I instinctively knew was Midoriya's, various parts of his body gained a red tint showing where he was injured, and finally I could even see different 'layers' of the greenette's body. A moment later, all of Midoriya's various injuries faded away and the energy bar lost a small chunk, the number beside it now reading 95%.
"It doesn't hurt anymore." Midoriya said in wonder knocking me out of my surprise. Hoisting the kid up, once he was on his feet, I let go of his hand and looked at mine as I said "So that's why my Quirk hadn't shown up yet, it's a healing Quirk... Looks like it combined dad's X-ray with mom's Electric Channeling and Aunt Lissa's Tactile Healing."
"I'm glad you found out what your Quirk is Kira. You can be a great hero with a healing ability like that." Midoriya said. When I looked up, he was smiling, but there was a soul deep disappointment in his eyes as well.
I studied him for a moment before I looked back at my hand. Clenching it, I said "Midoriya, let me ask you something."
"Okay, what is it?" Midoriya asked.
"What makes a Hero Midoriya?" I asked, looking back up at him in time to see him stiffen and continued "Historically speaking, Quirks haven't actually been around all that long. Certainly not as long as the term 'Hero'. People who have rushed into burning buildings before the fire department could arrive because they knew someone was still in there. A soldier who risked his own life by running into a fire fight to save a wounded comrade. A survivor of a plane crash that kept all of the other survivors calm and safe until rescue. Even skiers that used the plastic netting of a safety barrier as a catch net for someone stuck in a chair lift that broke down. These and more all have something in common, they saw people in danger and did what they could to help them. If you want to be a Hero, then don't let not having a Quirk keep you from going for it. "
Tears began appearing in Midoriya's eyes but I wasn't done yet. Putting the hand that had healed him on Midoriya's shoulder, I said "However, willpower and a desire to help will not be enough. You must train both your body and your mind to be able to handle the demands being a Hero will make of you. You must be able to run to the danger and still have the energy to resolve the trouble. You must be strong enough to help those that are trapped, and you must be able to fight off those that will wish to cause harm not only to you but the people you are protecting. And that's just on the physical side of things. You must also be able to take in a situation and find the best solution, using not only you but your fellow heroes as well."
I smirked and said "I'm going to paraphrase something from an old Manga called Naruto that sums up what I just said rather well: If you do not possess Heaven, gain knowledge and be prepared. If you do not possess Earth, run through the field and seek strength. If you obtain both Heaven and Earth, dangerous paths turn into safe ones. This is the secret of being a Proper Hero, it shall lead you on your way."
Tears were falling from Midoriya's eyes but he gave a deep sniff and said "I'll do it, I'll train super hard and make it so that no one can doubt my ability to be a Hero!"
That day, I gained a best friend.
Time Skip: Later That Day After School
After I had made the deal with Taifun that had led me to being reborn in this world without memories of the story line, I had been extremely surprised to find out who my relatives were. My father was the Sinnoh Gym Leader of Sunnyshore City, Volkner, my mother was the Unovan Gym Leader of Nimbasa City Elesa. As if having Pokemon Gym Leaders for parents wasn't bewildering enough, my aunt on my dad's side was Lissa from Fire Emblem Awakening.
Volkner's Quirk was X-Ray. It was a fairly straightforward Quirk, though the name was a bit misleading since the man could use it to see the layers of something rather than just see what an X-Ray could. Dad was a gear head through and through, he was always tinkering with something whether it was a hero's support gear he had been commissioned to make, a modification to someone's washing machine so it needed less water, or even just a 'dumb' robot that would push the vacuum around the house so he didn't have to.
Elesa's Quirk was Lightning Channeling. It allowed her to absorb electricity and channel it through her body, either internally through her muscles and nervous system or externally to make a defensive shell around her (or make an amazing photo effect in front of a camera) She was a model that both designed and modeled clothing, for both Heroes and civilians.
Mom and dad had met when they were working on a joint project for a Hero's gear. The then 214th ranked Heroine was doing a rebranding since she was coming back to duty from having a child and had wanted to do a complete overhaul of both her costume and her equipment. Elesa and Volkner had had more than one working meal where they shared a tablet amongst each other and when the job was done had wound up continuing those meetings until they inevitably got together and married.
Then there was Lissa, my aunt. Her Quirk was Tactile Healing, and it was at the same time the most useful tool for her job as an emt and the biggest hinderance. If she put her hand on someone, she could heal their wounds but not only did she need to know exactly what she needed to do in order to heal the person without accidentally giving them cancer, it took her vitality for fuel as well. (Her hair used to be as brightly blonde as her brother's but now it was literally a pale imitation of its former glory.) Thankfully, her brilliant engineer of a brother had made her a handheld scanner that could show her exactly what needed fixing and said fixing in real time as she worked if the person she was working on wouldn't be able to make it to the hospital without drastic measures. (A sadly all too common occurrence in this day and age, even with Pro Hero response times.)
Aunt Lissa was actually living with my parents and I, taking the final bedroom of our three bedroom apartment. When the building her own apartment had been in got wrecked by a geokinetic villain two years ago Dad had offered the third bedroom and Lissa had brought what personal effects she could recover from the wreckage and moved in. (Mom had gone on a two day shopping spree with her to refill Aunt Lissa's closet and the dresser in the room so that way she had more than just hospital scrubs to wear.)
It was the latter who picked me up from school today giving me a tired smile as she said "Hey there kiddo, did you have a good day?"
I nodded and said "Considering my Quirk finally showed itself? I'd say so, you won the bet by the way."
Lissa's eyes widened before she gave a victorious fist pump and practically crowed out "Ha, I knew it had to be healer based with an encountered injury activation requisite!" She then grew somber and asked "What does it take?"
"Electricity apparently, I've got a heads up display in my head now with a battery icon and a percentage. And when I touched the classmate I healed, it let me see their DNA and the different layers of their body highlighting what was injured." I explained.
Lissa let out a low whistle and said "That is one hell of a combination of mine and your parents' Quirks." I nodded and she grinned as she said "Wish my Quirk ran on electricity, I'd be wearing a bracelet with jumper cables attached going to a car battery kept in a harness on my back."
I pictured that for a moment before I cackled and asked "And if anyone gets frisky you zap 'em?"
"Damn straight!" Lissa said with a nod. (Mom had long since given up trying to regulate my aunt's language around me when I pointed out I heard worse whenever a Villain fought a Hero.)
A moment later though, Lissa's body reminded her that she was actually tired and her eyes drooped a little while her shoulders slumped. Frowning, I reached up and took her right hand with my own and focused. A moment later, the sparks reappeared around my hand and I saw my aunt's body become see through. Lissa watched with a cocked eyebrow, interested to see what I had planned but a moment later, I shook my head and said "I don't know if it's due to having no training with it or it's just flat out impossible but while my Quirk can see your exhaustion I can't transfer some of my bio electricity to help with it."
"Ah, don't worry about it kid, I just need to get home and make a visit to my bed and I'll be good." Lissa said, removing her hand from my own to ruffle my hair before she took my right hand with her left and started walking to the nearby public bus stop.
Time Skip: Dinner Time
A now rested Lissa had been practically vibrating in her seat ever since she sat down. However when Elesa asked her what had her so excited she said that she wanted to wait until after dinner to tell them about it. I had rolled my eyes but decided to let my aunt have her fun and remained silent.
But now our utensils were laying on our dessert plates and Volkner pushed his plates forward so that way he could put his elbows on the table and clasp his hands in front of his face as he said "Alright sis, dinner's done, what's got you so wired up?"
Lissa's grin grew as she said "You both owe me twenty thousand yen."
Both my mom and dad blinked and Volkner asked "Come again?"
"You heard me, I won our bet so now pay up!" Lissa said, her grin probably hurting her face now with how wide it was.
Elesa jerked her head towards me, already beaming as she asked "Your Quirk showed itself Tac?"
I grinned and cleaned off my knife with a napkin before I sliced my thumb with the tip, wincing at the quick bit of pain. Elesa and Volkner watched with intent looks on their faces as I pushed on the pad of my thumb making a line of blood to appear. I showed them the small bit of blood before wiping it off and then my thumb lit up briefly in sparks. When they went away, I pushed on the pad again. When no more blood appeared, the pair quickly stood up and came over to examine my thumb up close.
"Amazing, his Quirk combined your's and Lissa's." Volkner mused to Elesa as his eyes gained a white glow allowing him to properly study my thumb to see how thorough the healing actually was.
"Oh no, it's even better than that, he got your Quirk added to the mix as well." Lissa said, giving a cackle of delight.
"You can see what is damaged?" Volkner asked me.
I nodded and said "I get a multilayered view of a person when I touch them with the injuries highlighted in red." I then frowned and said "And for some reason, I see a strand of DNA in my vision as well." Putting my left hand to my chin, I pondered "Maybe I can tweak a person's genetic strand if there's something wrong with it? Not sure I'm confident trying that without a degree in genetics though."
"Yeah, no, leave the pretty strings of beads alone." Lissa said with a chuckle.
"People, I think we're overlooking something important." Elesa said with a frown. When Volkner and Lissa looked at her, she continued "If Tac's Quirk needed someone to be injured to reveal itself, who did he use it on, and why was he or this other person injured?"
Three pairs of now serious eyes turned towards me, and I had a choice to make. I could say that I accidentally injured myself. Or I could tell the truth and throw Bakugo and his goons under the bus. (For all the good it would do with the 'evidence' removed.) Not exactly a head scratcher there. And so I told them what happened.
All three frowned at what I said and Lissa crossed her arms with a huff and said "I think I've seen the kid you're talking about. Kid's already got an ego the size of a boulder in that little head of his."
Volkner hummed and said "Hm, unfortunately with Midoriya's injuries healed, and the other kid having not told a teacher already, it would be a case of this Bakugo's word against Tac. However, I'm well aware how people like him behave, doubtless, he'll cause trouble again in the future. I'll make you a discrete body cam to wear. When he starts something again where you can see it we'll have video evidence so people will believe us."
I nodded at that and asked "First we show his teacher, second time, the Vice Principal, third time the Principal, and if he doesn't learn or they don't take proper action the police?"
"That's right, and we show his parents each time as well." Elesa said with a nod of her own.
Bakugo better shape up quick, I doubted UA would accept a student into their Hero Course that had been expelled for bullying.
Time Skip: Six Months Later
Bakugo learned real quick that while we were at school I'd go out of my way to keep him in eyesight, or rather camera sight. It only took me showing his mother and father the video footage of him beating up another kid one time before he realized that if he didn't behave he'd get a sore behind and sore ears from both auditory and physical assault. The kid was constantly scowling at me but otherwise behaved. (At least at school)
Right now though I was neither at school or thinking about Bakugo. Instead, I was being 'taught' how to throw a punch, Izuku standing beside me in our first self defense class. Izuku had excitedly ran up to me last week talking about how his mom had signed him up for the class and asking if I would join him. My family was pretty chill with the idea and signed me up the next day. Right now, our moms were sitting in chairs near the front of the dojo, Inko fretting a bit while Elesa calmly watched.
Thirty minutes of little kids punching at a padded board later, the teacher allowed the new students to 'take a crack' at some of the students that had been learning longer. None of the teens, just those who hadn't hit double digits yet. Padded armor for sparring was brought out and I had the pleasure of seeing kids try to fight each other. It was kind of like watching a cartoon slap fight to be honest.
When it was my turn, I eyed the the kid with three strips of tape on his white belt before I sighed through my nose and thought 'Well, let's get this over with then.' The teacher told us to begin and I jumped forward with right arm chambered for a punch. My opponent shifted into the start of a block at my 'obvious' opener but just before I would have thrown the punch I dropped to the ground and leg swept the kid's legs out from under him. The kid went down with a startled shout and a moment later I was straddling him with my tiny fist resting on his padded helmet.
"Well, that was a quick one." The instructor said in amusement as a chibi in his first class sat on a kid a good five years older than him.
Hopping up, I offered my opponent a hand even as I asked "Again?" The kid accepted the hand and I grunted as I leaned back while he used me as a lever to pull himself up. The kid thankfully was a good sport and nodded so we took our places again.
Time Skip: Six Years Old
After a round of experiments at the hospital Lissa used as a 'home base' in her work as an emt, we had learned that if electricity was introduced to my body from an outside source my HUD gained a second icon under the battery and percent. It was the shape of a plug followed by two numbers, the first was the number of volts being sent into me and the second was what was being stored until I used that electricity. If I had used my bio electricity before taking in electricity from an outside source the incoming electricity would be used to bring me back up to one hundred percent before it would begin bumping up that second number. Further testing of my healing ability showed that my Quirk (which we had decided to call Regenerator) could give me a rough ball park of how much voltage it would take to heal an injury once it had encountered that kind of injury before. It wasn't always right, but it was never outside a ten percent margin of error.
If I was going to be using my Quirk, then it was just common sense to have easy access to an external source so that way I didn't bring the level of my bio electricity down to dangerous levels. (I kind of needed it for my brain to send all of the needed signals to the rest of my body to continue living after all.) Despite what Lissa had said on that day when my Quirk showed itself though, I wouldn't be strapping a car battery to my back. For one thing, those suckers were both blocky and heavy. And they had acid in them.
Instead, what I was currently making at my dad's workstation with him supervising was a hand crank generator small enough to fit on my left forearm with leads that would press against my arm. Dad had already made me a twelve foot cord with a hand grip on one end that I could plug into a standard outlet which I could hold the end of with one hand while I healed someone else but there wouldn't always be convenient power outlets for me to use. The hand crank generator would allow me to take in external electricity no matter where I was, and wouldn't be made useless if the area I was in suffered a blackout to boot.
As I worked, I said "Izuku showed up to school today with a notebook full of future costume and gear designs. Some of them were for me." I wasn't exaggerating there, my best friend had really taken an entire composition notebook and filled it to the last five pages with possible costume designs and what he wanted to have when he became a hero, those last five pages being ideas for myself.
"I thought you had decided to become an emt like your aunt." Volkner said, not looking up from what my hands were doing.
I nodded and said "It's what makes sense. My Quirk allows for on site rapid healing after all."
"I'm sensing a but there." Dad stated.
I was silent for a moment as I set the crank gear that the pop out handle would be attached to. When it was in place, my hands stilled as I said "EMTs are no longer actually the people that are the first responders to an incident when there are wounded in a public location."
Dad gave a hum and said "True, though it would be hard to heal anybody if you yourself wind up needing healing. Villains generally don't care about the Geneva Convention, having a healer's symbol on your costume is no guarantee that you would be left alone when things begin getting violent. In fact, some villains might even target you specifically because you could heal their victims."
"Yeah, but being an emt rather than a hero wouldn't keep those same villains from taking a crack at me if they're still fighting when I show up in an ambulance." I stated as I attached the outer case to the generator followed by the handle to the crank gear.
"That is true." Dad acknowledged as he watched me attach a pair of straps to the generator. As I strapped the generator onto my left arm, he continued "You know we'd support whichever choice you made, right?"
I paused again for a moment as my right hand hovered over where the handle was flipped over in its storage position. A moment later, I flipped the handle out and began slowly but steadily cranking it, watching as my HUD turned on and the numbers began to increase. I was silent for five rotations before I said "I'm not sure what that choice is anymore."
"That is completely alright son, you still have several years until you must settle on a career." Dad stated. When I stopped cranking and looked up at him, he put a hand on my shoulder and said "This is what you will be doing for a good deal of your life going forward, it is not a decision you should make in haste."
I nodded then looked down at the generator. A few moments later, I flipped the handle back into its storage divot and unstrapped the generator, putting it on the table before I reached for the second set of parts Dad had given me to use. Always have a backup for your equipment ready.
Time Skip: Seven Years Old
Parkour was an, interesting class. Izuku and I were almost constantly on the move when we were taking it in the massive building that was filled with tons of different obstacles one could maneuver around. Heck, it even had a square staircase in one corner of the building that the more advanced parkour students could hop down from railing to railing.
What made it even more interesting today was that a parkour class from Tokyo that was visiting the facility. A class with a chibi Sero Hanta as a member. Kid was a real spider monkey, laughing as he swung around everything, including a few of the ceiling rafters. (His teacher scolded him something FEIRCE for that.) Hopefully the kid would settle down in the next seven years, or better yet, it was just how full of obstacles the building was that was winding him up greater than a sugar addict left unsupervised in a candy store.
I was brought out of those thoughts by a loud thump and a quick but vicious round of cursing. Head snapping over to my right, I saw one of the adult Parkour members leaning against an obstacle while holding their left foot off of the ground as they worked to get their shoe off.
"Sensei." I got my class' teacher's attention. The woman (Who's quirk allowed her to turn her body parts into springs like a certain pirate from One Piece) glanced up from her clipboard and followed my gaze. A moment later, she said formally "Kirakiraboshi, as your instructor, I hereby authorize use of your Quirk."
"Thanks." I said as I walked over. It was not the first time we had had that particular back and forth. Parkour was not kind on the body if you made mistakes after all.
Walking over to the man who had finally got his shoe off, I formally stated "Sir, my Quirk is a contact healer, may I tend to your injury?"
"Go for it kid." The man said, not even looking up at me. Like I said, this wasn't the first time I had to do this, pretty much everyone had seen me heal someone at some point in the three years that Izuku and I had been part of this class. With protocol followed, my hand started sparking and I put it on the ankle. A quick look showed that the ankle had been twisted but thankfully not injured any further than that. Simple fix, my bio electricity only dropped a single percent as the overstrained muscles were repaired.
Once I was finished, the man thanked me then put his shoe back on and I rejoined my class. Things continued on as normal and soon I was making a run over the obstacles our teacher designated.
Time Skip: Nine (and 3/4s) Years Old
Even this far into the future there were 'Bring Your Kid(s) To Work Day' events. I had a bit of a special case in that it was actually my aunt bringing me to work today. Both Mom and Dad had felt that regardless of if I trained to be a Hero or an emt, learning how Lissa performed her job would be far more profitable in the grand scheme of things than spending the day at mom's modeling agency or dad's workshop. I was however told in no uncertain terms that if Lissa got a call out that I would stay either in the ambulance or right by her side, whichever she felt appropriate for the situation. (I was also told to keep my book bag on which today had my hand crank generators, the power plug compatible cord, and a second cord dad made me that had jumper cable clamps on one end)
Most of the day was fairly calm, we had been spending the majority of Aunt Lissa's shift in the ready room near the ambulances speaking with other emts currently on standby. Every once in a while an emt pair was sent out but the dispatcher had been making it a point to keep Aunt Lissa and her partner from going out when there were others available. Said partner was a man who had told me to call him by his nickname of Tai and whose Quirk was being able to map out whatever the pads on his two pinkie fingers touched (including a human to see what was damaged), which made Aunt Lissa's job of determining what she needed to fix if the situation required her to use her Quirk just that little bit easier. (Dad's scanner still had to be placed over the injured area for her to see what was wrong after all.)
Unfortunately, one hour before Aunt Lissa's shift ended, the dispatcher slapped a hand to the ear where they had an ear bud and a few moments later barked out "All hands on deck! We've got partially collapsed buildings on the corners of Sakura and Elm street due to a villain with an explosion generation Quirk. Heroes are already engaged with the Villain but there's no guarantees that they'll have her detained when you get there so don't do anything stupid!"
"Come on kid, with multiple buildings damaged we might need the extra help of your Quirk." Aunt Lissa said before she bent down and picked me up out of the seat I was in like I was a toddler rather than an almost ten year old. I would have been offended if she hadn't then bolted out of the room after the others at a speed that I would have been hard pressed to keep up with due to my shorter legs. In moments ambulance doors were slamming shut and sirens filled the garage as engines were started before the six ambulances that had been waiting in the garage at that time took off.
It took us ten minutes to get to the location. I sat on Aunt Lissa's lap as we went and when we were a minute out she pulled out four circular stickers with red cross symbols on them and the name of the hospital written around the edge from the glove compartment, slapping one each on my book bag, the front of my shirt, and the side of both sleeves. When we got there, it looked like a minor war had taken place, craters in the streets, parts of the four buildings on the street intersection with windows blown out and large chunks of the walls missing, and more than one car heavily damaged. The only good thing was that the person who I assumed to be the villain was currently trapped in a giant blob of hardened foam, even her mouth covered in the stuff while two Heroes stood guard over her.
Aunt Lissa quickly got out of the ambulance, still holding me as she gave a quick look around. Spotting what used to be a light pole at one of the further corners from us where wires were hanging out and sparking, Aunt Lissa put me down and pointed to that corner as she said "Tac, go there and start getting charged. Make sure you tell her (her pointing finger shifted slightly to the Heroine keeping people well away from the sparking wires) that you are with the emts and were told to deal with those wires."
"Yes ma'am." I said with a nod before I took off. As I ran, I heard Aunt Lissa speak into the radio speaker/mic clipped to her right shoulder telling everyone else to bring any really bad cases to the northwest corner for me to heal.
The heroine (who's costume looked remarkably like what Hyrule Warriors Zelda wore minus the crown) saw me running over and held up a hand to stop me. I stopped in front of her and told her what my aunt had told me to say, tacking on "Part of my Quirk is being able to absorb electricity from external sources and use it to heal others."
The Heroine's eyes flicked down to the sticker on the front of my shirt before she nodded and said "Alright kid, do what you have to."
I nodded back and slipped around her, gathering each wire at the broken part of the pole and pulling them through my hand until I reached their sparking ends. I gave a soft grunt as the electricity began entering my body and the numbers in my HUD began to rapidly increase faster than they ever had before. Not ten seconds later, one of the on site heroes was brought over, a big chunk blasted out of his left bicep. The Hero grunted in pain as he was helped into a kneeling position in front of me by his buddy.
"Oh geeze." I said lowly to myself as I saw the wound but quickly shook my head when he was kneeling in front of me and put my non wire holding hand on the guy's shoulder. Sparks appeared on that hand and I saw with my HUD that on top of the damage to the arm the Hero had more than one rib cracked and one of them was even broken.
I wish that Hero had had the worst injury I healed that day. Unfortunately, there were multiple injuries where big pieces of shrapnel had embedded themselves into someone and even one poor bystander had had their leg mangled so badly it might as well have been amputated. (Her toes and a good chunk of the end of her foot HAD been missing when I got my hand on her.)
I stood at that damaged lamp post for just over two hours working on the patients brought to me while Aunt Lissa and the other emts ran triage with two of the on site Heroes in order to ensure the worst off patients survived until they could be healed by me. Most of the other heroes worked on finding those trapped in the damaged buildings, the Hero with the foaming Quirk meanwhile quickly put temporary patches in the roads then used his foam to ensure that the damaged buildings stayed standing until repair crews could properly fix them.
By the time all of the seriously wounded had been attended to, I was exhausted. Even with the electricity from the damaged lamp post using my Quirk for so long became rather tiring, mentally if not physically. Thankfully, when all that were left were those with nicks and small bruises I was told by Aunt Lissa to leave the rest of the Quirk Assisted Healing to her and to go take a nap in the ambulance. (This may or may not have had to do with the city employed electrician that was there to fix the street lights and who had already finished working on everything else by that time.)
Aunt Lissa asked the Heroine who had been standing by the lamp post when we arrived to keep an eye on me while I rested. When I gave her a look for that, she pointed out that a kid who could heal serious injuries on people so long as he had enough electricity could be a VERY tempting target for those with ill intent and while she didn't doubt I could kick the ass of anyone who wanted to kidnap me, (I was currently a third rank blue belt) that would be rather hard to do if they did the attempt while I was sleeping. I gave a tired 'Fair enough.' then tiredly made my way to the ambulance. I wound up sleeping for the rest of the day, not waking up until roughly eleven thirty in the night, finding myself in my bed and changed into my pajamas when I did so.
I would have done my best to fall back to sleep if my stomach hadn't announced its displeasure in not receiving its evening offering. Giving a quiet sigh, I slipped out of the bed and padded out of the room and into the kitchen. When I entered I saw dad typing on his laptop at the kitchen table. His eyes flicked up from the screen as I entered before flicking back down. He typed a bit faster for a short moment before he stood up and went to the fridge and pulled out a pre-made meal. After sticking it into the microwave he walked over and kneeled in front of me, putting his hands on my shoulders and asked "How are you holding up Tac? Did you have any bad dreams?"
"No, but I'm sure they'll come eventually." I said with a small sigh. A few moments of thought later, I said "I'm feeling...decent right now. While there were grievous injuries, no one was killed before medical services arrived, and Aunt Lissa and the others were able to keep the victims stable until I was able to heal them."
Dad accepted this and when the microwave announced it was finished heating the meal, he took it out and set it on the table for me before going back to his typing. There was vocal silence as I ate, I was still waking up and dad was clearly doing work with how intent his typing (and the occasional mouse click) was. When I finished my meal I played with my fork as I thought about what had happened earlier today.
Fifteen minutes that felt much longer to me later, I took in a deep breath then said "Dad?"
Volkner's typing stopped and he looked up at me as he asked "Yes Son?"
Looking up from the table, I locked eyes with him and stated "I've decided. I'll become a Hero." As dad closed the lid of his laptop, I continued "If I'm out on the streets when disaster strikes, I can reach the injured much faster than if I'm waiting for a call at a hospital, especially if I have some form of flight tech I can use when I get said call to go over traffic."
"Making useable flight tech with an adequate flight time without having an augmenting Quirk to help with thrust and or direction will be challenging to make." Volkner mused to himself before he nodded and said dryly with an amused smile "However, since you will not be graduating from a Hero School for the better part of a decade, I believe I can come up with something feasible in time to meet that deadline."
My lips twitched upward at that dry statement as well. Knowing dad, he'd probably have it ready in about six months time of working on the problem in between his normal projects.
Time Skip: Four Days Later
It was somewhat surreal opening the apartment door when someone knocked and seeing Principal Nezu and Recovery Girl on the other side. I blinked a couple of times and then waved the hand not holding the door as I said "Uh, hi."
Nezu's pleasant smile grew a fraction and he waved back as he said "Hello there young man, may we come in?"
I gave a brief shake of my head to clear my surprise and pulled the door wider as I said "Yeah, come on in. Sorry, Principal Nezu, it's just nobody told me we were expecting company."
"Ah good, you know who I am, that will make things quicker." Nezu said as he walked in and gestured to Recovery Girl as he continued "Do you by chance know my associate as well?"
"Recovery Girl." I said, nodding in greeting to her as she passed.
"That's right Sonny." Recovery Girl said with a nod of her own.
Soon our visitors were seated in the apartment's living room as well as my parents with me sitting between Volkner and Elesa. Aunt Lissa was currently at the hospital but had been contacted and the tv was being used to host a FaceTime call with her phone allowing her to take part in the meeting.
"Since you were not expecting us today I believe that I shall start with that." Nezu stated, placing his paws on his lap as he continued "Three days ago, your father contacted Recovery Girl. He informed her that you have a healing Quirk and wished to become a Hero and as such, he was wondering if she would be willing to take you on as an apprentice. Of course, taking on someone so young as an apprentice is no small matter. And while our society could use every Healer Quirk out there to help people, a person is more than their Quirk and so we are here to see if you might have a future at our school."
"I see." I said, looking up at my dad who looked back down with a somewhat playful smirk at the bit of harmless fun he had in not telling me about this. Looking over at the tv, I asked "Aunt Lissa, did you know about this?" (As an emt, it made sense dad would have talked to her about it. As his wife and my mother, mom was a given.)
Aunt Lissa proved that way of thinking wrong when she pouted at my dad and asked "You really think I would have given up the chance to meet Recovery Girl in person if I knew about this? Having this meeting while I'm at work is not cool brother."
"Sorry sis, but this meeting is about Tac's future, I didn't want to scare her off with your fangirling ." Dad said with a grin.
Aunt Lissa narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms as she said "I would NOT have fangirled."
Mom put a hand to her mouth and gave a short giggle before she said "Lissa dear, you have what amounts to a minor shrine in your room that holds Recovery Girl merchandise, you would have fangirled."
Nezu gave a chittering laugh at that and said "I'm certain a face to face meeting between the two of you can be arranged in the future Miss Kirakiraboshi."
My aunt gave a twitch and said "Lisa's fine principal, or if you must be formal, just Kira, Kirakiraboshi is too much of a mouthful."
"Very well." Nezu said with a nod of agreement. He then turned towards me and continued "Now then, let us get back to the matter at hand. First off, what manner of training, if any, do you do in preparation for becoming a Hero?"
After I explained about my martial arts and parkour classes, Nezu asked about how my grades were and if I had any trouble with certain subjects. Once I had given my answer to that question, he asked my parents if they agreed with what I stated. After that he gave me a series of hypothetical situations that I had to come up with solutions for, both on my own (with and without certain pieces of support gear) and with other first responders.
After the last scenario, Nezu leaned forward in his seat and said "One last question Young Tac, and I ask you to be as honest as possible on this. Why do you wish to be a Hero when your Quirk could be used in the safety of a hospital or from the back of an ambulance?"
I looked down and thought over my answer for a few long moments. As I did so, an introduction video for a certain Overwatch Heroine came to mind. Looking up at Principal Nezu and the so far silent Recovery Girl, I took a deep breath and said "In stories it's the Heroes who get the Honor and Glory, with their shining armor and mighty weapons. But people don't understand that those Heroes are not invincible, and the people who heal them after their battles are heroes in their own rights as well. However sometimes it's not possible to patch someone up after the battle. It's not enough to wait until after a fight to bandage the fighter's wounds or help those caught in the middle of the battle. If you can fight at their side, you can try to keep the blows from falling, and maybe even protect them from themselves." In my mind's eye, a shadowy figure appeared, curly green hair being the only thing I could properly discern about their appearance. Clenching my fists, I concluded "I have a healing Quirk, that means that I fix what has been damaged. But if I can be where the injuries are happening faster, if I can keep more from happening in the first place? Then a Hero I will become."
"Well said." Recovery Girl said with a nod. Tapping her syringe cane on the ground, she declared "I've been hoping to find an apprentice I could teach in my advanced years. You'll do quite nicely young man."

Author's Notes: Standard reminder to vote on the poll for what you want me to work on next. Also an apology for how literal last day this one is, there were other projects I worked on, and working in a cinderblock plant in June while in SC really wipes you out, I wound up going to sleep around eight and waking up at six most days.
