Harry had of course been let off at his trial. This was not a new thing for him, Iris assumed based off the little she had been informed about the boy, and yet the order celebrated as if he had never faced anything so terrifying before. "I'm happy for you" Iris had mustered, with a small smile, Harry smiling back with a nod.
"Wow, such a bond between you two" George spoke sarcastically "Wish we could be that close Fred" His twin chuckling as the two appeared either side of the girl.
"I don't know if I could ever muster enough joy to do that George" Fred retorted. Iris rolled her eyes, choosing to ignore the pair and instead reach for a bread roll in front of her and start helping herself to some soup.
That evening was another sleepless night waking up the house with her loud screams, this time causing the room to literally shake and furniture fall over. There had been a silencing charm put on Iris's door the moment she learnt such a spell existed, but considering the large crack in the floorboard next to her room, the adults were alerted something was going on. They had no idea her horrific night terrors were continuing to such an extent, getting worse in fact.
Sirius Black was the one to burst into the bedroom when feeling a slight tremor, but he was greeted by the site of one of the Weasley twins hugging a sobbing girl. The boy who looked as if he had been asleep only moments previous was now wide away "Me and Fred are directly upstairs, our floor was shaking" He explained to Sirius as to why he was there.
Sirius thanked the boy, going over to the girl as calm as possible, making sure to be a little heavier on his feet so he wasn't sneaking up to her "You can go to bed now" The older man told the teen, it wasn't a question and George was quick to follow his instructions, letting Sirius take his place next to the girl who burrowed herself into the older mans arms. Sirius shushing her and stroking her hair until her sobs had subsided enough for her to speak.
"Something bad has happened Sirius, I don't know what, but I can feel it" She told the man, eyes wide and earnest "Whenever I wake up screaming, something bad has always happened" she finished the sentence with a whisper but Sirius didn't doubt her. "The screams were never so bad until I came here. I could block them out. Now it's like there was voices whispering in my ear constantly, and I can't shut them off"
The next morning, a paler, more tired than usual Iris emerged downstairs, still shaken from whatever was haunting her in the night. She ignored the concerned glances from the adults in the room, Fred and George also looking at her sympathetically. It was for that reason (to the shock of many) Iris choose to sit next to Harry. He wasn't looking at her with pity, by her understanding Harry wasn't aware of her furniture breaking nightmares. "Morning" Harry offered a curious smile.
"Morning" Iris responded, reaching for the coffee and some toast. The table was quite full, there was a shopping trip planned that morning which one or two of the children were going on, along with some order member for protection. Harry was not one of those people being permitted to go, much to his disdain. "Welcome to my world" Iris murmured when hearing his complaints.
"There was another muggle attack last night" Remus commented, looking at a newspaper in front of him, it wasn't moving and for that reasons Iris suspected it wasn't a magic paper. "A mass killing, followed by arson, signs of magic for those looking for it" he added.
"Why?" Harry wondered "What's the point of killing them?"
"Well an assertion of power we assume, they don't look to be like Muggles anybody would particularly miss, and it's an easy attack to do without sparking the ministry interference" Remus sighed, shaking his head in sadness.
"Wait" Iris called, standing up and snatching the paper from her godfathers hands. "You're right" she murmured, looking at the picture of the burnt down building "Nobody would miss them, except me." With shaking hands, the redhead sunk into her seat, eyes watering over as she looked at her godfather "These were my people. They were drunk, sad, homeless misfits, but they were all I had. This is where I was staying before you found me. It's where I spent the nights." The runaway was quick to remind people of the state of her life and how she had grown up in that statement, but also to remind them of why she was with them now.
"He knows we've found you" Remus spoke.
"It's a message" Sirius confirmed.
"We should call Dumbledore, he'll want to know. Iris, I'm sorry, but any thoughts of sneaking off are gonna have to disappear" Tonks pulled a sympathetic face at the fifteen year old who didn't bother responding.
Iris stood to her feet, not bothering to hide the fact she had pulled a cigarette pack from her pocket, putting a stick between her lips and taking off up to her room, immediately going towards the window and sitting on the ledge, lighting it up and inhaling the smoke. "I wish I could go back to being in the dark" Iris murmured just audibly enough for the person who had entered the room behind her to hear. "I wish I didn't have a fucking clue about any of this magic shit, that I could be oblivious again. What good has it done having me here? I only stayed to save my friends. And they're all dead now anyway."
Iris had expected it to be Remus or Sirius who had followed her, maybe George who had become a comfort of sorts. She hadn't expected it to be Harry, not until he hesitantly pulled himself up onto the other side of the window. Iris glance had him before turning away, hastily wiping at her eyes before she blew smoke in the opposite direction. "Guess this is the shit you've had to live with for a while eh?" She questioned.
"Kinda. I've never had to go into hiding before. But I did have a friend die, last summer. I watched Voldemort kill him, when he came back" Harry informed his twin matter-of-factly. It was the first time he had been able to talk about Cedrics death without guilt and anger consuming him, without having pitying glances or being told there was nothing he could have done. "I'm sorry I've not tried to talk to you properly before this" He added.
Iris snorted "A conversation is a two-way street, I didn't really try either. But what could I say?" Iris answered honestly. She looked at the boy again. Her twin. "Your eyes, they're the same as mine. I never really noticed before" the red head half smiled.
Harry grinned, usually when hearing comment on his eyes it was that they were his mother, something he told the girl. "You look like her, Mum I mean. Eerily like the picture I've seen." The teenage boy hesitated a moment "Have you been shown any pictures?" He wondered and Iris shook her head, curiosity filling her when her twin quickly left the room and came back only a moments later with a photo album, handing it to her and watching in apprehension as Iris flipped through it.
Iris paused at one photo in particular, it was a still photo showing two babies giggling and holding each others hand, identical eyes but one with crops of black hair and the other red. "That's us?" Iris spoke the obvious. "Did… did you always know about me? That I existed I mean?"
Harry nodded "I knew I had a twin sister, and obviously I had the photos as proof, but everyone thought you were dead, that's what they told me. I grieved you just like I did my- our- parents" the black hair teen told her. "Did you?" he wondered.
"No. I had no idea" Iris replied honestly "I was left on the steps of a shitty orphanage with a note saying what my name was, and the name of my parents. All it said was that they couldn't look after me anymore. I had assumed they were dead, due to where I was left, but I had always held onto the tiniest bit of hope, for a while"
"What made you lose it?"
Iris let out a harsh laugh "Lets just say I wasn't taken in by the nicest of people. I know you've had it pretty shit with your aunt and uncle, those downstairs told me about them. But honest Harry, I would pick the Durselys in a heartbeat" Iris confessed earnestly "I'm sorry that you've been left with me as a sister, because I'm a mess" The ginger chuckled harshly.
"No more than anyone else in this family" Harry replied simply, shrugging his shoulder "I mean, look at our godfathers, a wrongly convicted man wanted for mass murder, spent twelve years in the worst prison possible, the other a werewolf rejected from society, barely getting through life." Harry spoke honestly. "Are you sorry you've met them?" the boy asked, knowing the answer.
Iris rolled her eyes, playfully moving her leg forward and nudging the boy with her foot. "No, as much as I hate being stuck here… I'm glad I've got them. I'm almost glad I've met you." Iris wasn't teasing with that "I'm glad I know that I have some family out there, I'm glad I know that my parents didn't just abandon me, but at the same time… I think there's a reason both of us ended up in unfortunate situations. I think it was orchestrated on purpose"
Harry was confused by her words "What do you mean?" he asked.
"Think about it, you've pretty much been told since the moment you entered the wizarding world that Voldemort was after you, he killed your parents and you've been almost brainwashed into believing you have to be the one to end him. Somebody who had known that from the start, knowing you would be instrumental in stopping Voldemort should he return, might be inclined to mould you into the perfect soldier from the beginning. After being left in an abusive house hold for over a decade, who isn't going to show loyalty to the first place to show kindness, and to the man who seems to be a savour" Iris ranted what she had been thinking for the past couple weeks.
Standing to her feet, pacing back and forth the girl continued her train of thought, ignoring the growing annoyance from her twin ready to fight her "After all, had Sirius not been arrested you would have lived with him, and considering he didn't have a trial, and the person who's job it was to ensure that was Dumbledore it seems like he really wanted you to live there. Plus there's the fact I was put to an orphanage. I was told it's because our magic would clash, that bad magic had been put onto me. But if my magic was bound and I could no longer use it then why was that a risk. Unless of course he wanted you to be alone. That makes sense as to why I was told my parents were gone but nothing of your existence, or I might have been inclined to find you."
Harry shook his head, eyes narrowed at the girl "If you're insinuating Dumbledore is the bad one here then you're so wrong. You'd don't know him"
"Do you?" Iris inquired back, eyebrow raised and head tilted. "I'm just saying putting blind faith into the man seems ridiculous to me, considering how shady he is." By this point Iris had returned to her window ledge and was lighting up another cigarette, head turned away from the fellow teen in a way that indicated she was done with the conversation, leaving Harry to storm out, slamming the door behind him as he did so.
