Prologue 1, Part 1

Hiccup's POV and narration

In the middle of nowhere stood an island in the Barbaric Archipelago that was being raided by flying creatures that had appeared out of nowhere.

'This is Berk, it's twelve days north of hopeless and a few degrees south of freezing to death. It's located solidly on the meridian of misery. My village. In a word? Sturdy. It's been here for seven generations, but every single building is new. We have fishing, hunting, and a charming view of the sunsets. The only problems are the pests.'

As two sheep were doing nothing but eating grass, the one on the right is quickly snatched from the ground and the one on the left walks over to the spot the right sheep was and finishes eating the leftover grass.

'You see most places have mice or mosquitoes, we have…'

A fifteen year old boy who is thin with auburn hair, wearing a green tunic, green pants, brown boots, and a brown fur vest opens the door only to see a flying creature breath fire at him as quickly shuts the door. "Dragons."

The scenery changes to people in odd clothing fighting off dragons.

'Most people would leave. But not us, we're vikings, we have stubbornness issues.'

I quickly ran out of my house and into the battlefield.

'My name's Hiccup. Great name, I know but it's not the worst, parents believe that hideous names will frighten off gnomes and trolls, like our charming viking demeanor wouldn't do that.'

As I fell to the ground from an explosion, a large viking runs up to me and yells at my face."Morning!" he said.

As I quickly ran through the village, people started yelling at me to get back inside. When I was close to the forge, a large hand grabbed the back of my tunic and pulled me backwards as a dragon shot fire in my path. The large hand belonged to a large viking with a big reddish orange beard with lots of braids, a brown fur cloak, and a viking helmet with long horns on each side."Hiccup, what is he doing out he-, what are you out, get inside!" the large viking said.

'That's Stoick the Vast, chief of the tribe. They say that when he was a baby, he popped a dragon's head clean off of its shoulders, do I believe it? Yes I do.'

Normal POV

Stoick then picks up a wooden wagon and throws it at a dragon with a sheep in its claws which was released when the dragon got hit. "What have we got?" Stoick asked.

"Grongles, nadders, zipplebacks. Oh and Horak saw a monstrous nightmare." Another viking said.

An explosion happened behind Stoick as the viking ducked down and a small burning piece of whatever landed on Stoick's left shoulder."Any Night Furies?" Stoick asked.

"None so far." said the viking.

"Good." Stoick said as he wiped the burning piece off his shoulder.

Hiccup's POV and narration

As I was making my way over to the forge, large torches were being lit up to fend off the dragons. When I finally got to the forge, I was met with a large viking with a long blonde mustache, a prosthetic leg, a prosthetic changeable hand, and a viking helmet with horns pointed up.

"Oh nice of you to join the party, I thought you would be carried off." He told me as he was hammering a hot piece of metal on an anvil. I took off my vest and put on my apron then struggled as I lifted up a large hammer piece to hang on the wall despite my thin body.

"What? Who, me? Come on, I'm way too muscular to their taste, they wouldn't know what to do with… all this." I said as I struck a muscular pose.

"Well they need toothpicks, don't they." He said.

'The meathead with attitude and interchangeable hands is Gobber. I've been his apprentice ever since I was little, well littler.'

While I was repairing weapons, I heard a viking yell fire and five teenagers ran past me with buckets and a large barrel of water. The teenagers were three boys and two girls.

'Oh and that's Fishlegs, Snotlout, the twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut, and… Astrid.' I stared at Astrid romantically with fire behind her as she was walking. I have had a crush on her since we were children.

'Oh their job is so much cooler.' I was about to go join them until I felt being lifted up by Gobber.

"Oh come on, let me out please. I need to make my mark." I said as Gobber put me back down.

"Oh you made plenty of marks. All in the wrong places." Gobber said while poking me the chest with his hook hand.

"Please, two minutes. I'll kill a dragon, my life will get infinitely better. I might even get a date." I said to Gobber.

"You can't lift a hammer, you can't swing an ax, and you can't even throw one of these." Gobber said while lifting up small bolas. Then a viking took the bolas from Gobber's hand and threw it at a dragon which got tangled up in the bolas.

"Okay fine, but this will throw it for me." I said as I gestured and patted a bola launcher which I invented. I then accidentally triggered it and fired a large bola in Gobber's direction. He avoided it but it hitted a viking in the face knocking him out.

"See, now this right here is what I'm talking about!" Gobber said glaring at me.

"Miled calibration issue-." I said.

"No no, Hiccup. If you ever want to go out there and fight dragons, you need to stop all… this." He said while gesturing to all of me.

"But you just pointed to all of me." I said while confused at what he meant.

"Yes, that's it. Stop being all of you." Gobber said to me, making me realize what he meant.

"Ooooohhhhh." I said.

"Ooooohhhhh, yeah." He said thinking I would follow his advice.

"You-You sir are playing a dangerous game. Keeping this much raw vikingness contained, there will be consequences." I said.

"I'll take my chances, sword sharpened now" He said while giving me an unsharpened sword. As I made my way to the wheel grinder, I started thinking about killing dragons.

'One day, I'll get out there. Because killing a dragon is everything around here.' The scene changes to a group of dragons on roofs that resemble parrots. Then a group of dragons that looked chubby with warts on them and they were stealing fish that were hanging from logs. Then there is a dragon with two heads and two tales and was seen blowing up houses.

'A Nadder head will sure get me at least noticed. Gronckles are tough, taking down one of those will definitely get me a girlfriend. A Zippleback… exotic, two heads, twice the status.'

"They found the sheep." A viking said to Stoick.

"Concentrate fire on the lower bank." Stoick said while on a catapult tower.

'And then there's the Monstrous Nightmare, only the best vikings go after those. They have this nasty habit of setting themselves on fire.'

Stoick then sees fire on the lower part of the catapult which reveals a Monstrous Nightmare that pops out of nowhere while on fire. "Reload!. I'll take care of this." Stoick said to the other vikings as he started smacking the dragon with his hammer. Then out of nowhere, a loud whistle-like sound caught his attention and it drove the Monstrous Nightmare away. The sound also caught Hiccup's attention as he stops what he is doing and looks out the window of the forge.

'But the ultimate prize is the dragon no one has ever seen, we call it the-.'

"NIGHT FURY!" Yelled a viking.

"Get down!" Another viking said. The vikings ducked as the catapult was exploded by a purple blast of fire as a dragon that was black quickly flew over the catapult.

"Jump!" Stoick yelled to the other vikings as they jumped off the destroyed catapult.

'This thing never steals food, never shows itself, and… never misses.' Another explosion was then heard as the catapult exploded again.

'No one has ever killed a Night Fury, that's why I'm going to be the first.'

Normal POV

"Man the fort Hiccup, they need me out there." Gobber said to Hiccup as he was putting an ax on his prosthetic arm."Stay, put, there." Gobber told Hiccup who was confused about the way he said it. "You know what I mean." Gobber said then yelled as he ran into the battlefield.

Time Skip

Hiccup was running towards a cliff with his bola launcher then started setting it up and loading it. He then waits patiently for the dragon to come.

"Come on, give me something to shoot at, give me something to shoot at." Hiccup said to himself. He then hears the whistling sound and it begins to get louder. He aimed the sight at a catapult where it exploded and the dragon flew by. Hiccup then fires the launcher and it knocks him on the ground. As he gets back up, he hears the bola hit something and a loud shriek comes from the dragon. He then sees it falling to the woods.

"Oh I hit it. Yes I hit it! Did anybody see that?" He says then he hears something behind him which was a Monstrous Nightmare coming up behind him and destroys the launcher by stepping on it. "Except for you." Hiccup said after he turned around.

Time Skip

The scene changes to Hiccup is running from the dragon and begins to hide behind a torch pole. He then cringes as the dragon shoots gel that was burning and Hiccup took a peak to see where the dragon had gone not knowing it was sneaking up behind him. As the dragon was about to get Hiccup, Stoick comes out of nowhere tackling the beast away from hiccup. The dragon was about to shoot more burning gel only for a tiny amount of it to come out. Seeing this, the dragon looked at Stoick and became worried.

"You're all out." Stoick said and began hitting the dragon with his fists until it flew away. Stoick looks over to the pole where Hiccup was hiding behind and starts glaring at him while Hiccup watches the torch falling down and rolling away.

Hiccup's POV and Narration

'Oh and there's one more thing you need to know.'

As I watch the torch rolling away, I cringe at the damage and injuries other vikings were getting. Then I looked at Stoick and said "Sorry Dad."I then watched as dragons were flying away with our food and sheep in their clutches. People then started glaring at me then looked at my father to see what would happen. "Okay but I hit a Night Fury." I quickly said to him then he grabbed me by the back of my vest and pulled me away with him. "Uh, it's not like the last few times dad, I mean I really actually hit it. You guys were busy and I had a very clear shot, it went down just off raven point. Let's get a search party out there and-."

"STOP! Just, stop. Everytime you step outside, disaster follows. Can you not see that I have bigger problems? Winter is almost here and I have an entire village to feed!" He said to me. "Well between you and men, do you think that the village could do with a little less feeding, don't you think" I said sarcastically.

"This isn't a joke Hiccup! Why can't you follow the simplest orders?" My father asked.

"I can't stop myself, I see a dragon and I have to just… kill it, you know? It's who I am, Dad." I said reasonly. I see him rubbing his forehead, while looking stressed.

"Oh you're many things Hiccup. But a dragon killer is not one of them." He said which stung me a little bit. "Get back to the house." He told me. "Make sure he gets there, I have his mess to clean up." He said to Gobber who swatted me in the head.

As I was making my way back over to the house, I heard the teens except Astrid, snickering and laughing at me because of my stunt.

"Quite the performance." Tuffnut said.

"I've never seen anyone mess up that badly, that helped." Snotlout told me.

"Thank you, thank you, I was trying, so." I replied back. Gobber then pushes Snotlout out of the way. "I really did hit one." I told Gobber when we made it back to the house.

"Sure Hiccup." Gobber said.

"He never listens." I said.

"Well, it runs in the family." He replied back.

"And when he does, it's always with this... disappointed scowl like someone skimped the meat in his sandwich. "Excuse me, barmaid. I'm afraid you brought me the wrong offspring. I ordered an extra large boy with beefy arms. Extra guts glory on the side. This here. This is a talking fishbone." I said mimicking my Father's voice.

"Now you're thinking about this all wrong, it's not so much what you like, it's what's inside that he can't stand." He said trying to cheer me up but it wasn't working.

"Thank you for summing that up." I said as I reached the doorway.

"Look, the point is stop trying so hard to be something you're not." Gobber said.

"I just want to be one of you guys." I said as I went inside. I waited for Gobber to leave then went out the back to find the dragon I shot down.
