The summer after Harry's seventh year at Hogwarts was the best he ever had.
It hadn't begun well; Dumbledore had begged Harry to stay at the Dursleys for just a bit during the summer, just enough to benefit from the ancient spell that still protected him when he was with his blood relatives. But one week into the summer, an owl arrived for Harry. The letter said he should leave the Dursleys' for Sirius' house at 9:00 sharp on Saturday, which was the following day. So Harry started to pack.
At nine on Saturday night, Harry dragged his stuff down the stairs very silently and left through the front door, avoiding the Dursleys, who watched him leave with satisfaction.
Harry thought hard about his Apparation license, which he had earned the summer before, but hadn't used since. He concentrated hard on Number 12, Grimwauld Place. With a pop, he was there and saw it was dustier than the last time he had been there. No one was in the entryway to greet him, but there was light coming from the kitchen so Harry walked in to see Ron and Hermione.
"Hi," Harry said to the both of them, "what was that letter about?"
Ron was grinning from ear to freckled ear. "Harry, you're not going to believe this."
"What is it?" Harry asked, "What are you two doing here?"
"Harry," Ron said, looking like he was about to burst from excitement. "The Wimbourne Wasps, Harry, the English Quidditch team, just accepted me as their Keeper."
"Wow! Ron, that's great," Harry said in amazement. He hadn't even known Ron was going to try out, but it made sense. In their six and seventh years, Ron had not let one single Quaffle through his hoops. It was a new record. Of course, it looked like he'd be put to more of a test now.
Ron seemed to bask in the glow of Harry's wonder for a moment before adding, "and that's not all. They are looking for a new Seeker. Harry, you've got to try for it!"
"Really?" Harry asked. He'd always wanted to be an Auror, but the opportunity to continue flying, to play for a national team…
"Harry," Hermione said, speaking up for the first time, "I set you up with a tryout first thing tomorrow so you should probably get some sleep."
"What?" Harry asked.
"I'm working as an assistant coach for a while," Hermione stated matter-of-factly. "The team asked me to help them with strategy. I wouldn't have done it," she said, shaking her head at the idea of more Quidditch, "but the Ministry is counting it as an internship."
"And it will mean the three of working together," Ron added.
"That's if I even make the team," Harry corrected.
Ron laughed. "Of course you'll make the team, Harry. There current Seeker's got nothing on you."
"But you really should go to bed," Hermione said bossily. "We've got to get up really early tomorrow and you want to be on form."
