Synopsis:
A very short drabble I made some time ago for my friends at LJ
It is centered mostly about the death of Gil Galad

The smoke dust was clearing after the long and harsh battle The loud sounds from the battle were replaced by the cheers of the winning army and the moans and cries of the wounded and dying of both armies combined.

On his way home Elrond couldn't block out the horrors he had seen. So many dead and so much suffering that would haunt him for the centuries to come. No one had been prepared for that kind of battle and just by sheer luck they managed to survive.
Yes it was a victory, but for what price?
He pondered as he looked at the ring that his late friend had gave him. He felt a tear running down his cheek as he remembered Gil Galad's final moments. The Elf lord had fought and kept faith until the very end, and deep inside of him, Elrond suspected that even after his death the elflord would still be shouting at orcs and guiding his own armies from the halls of Mandos.
The herald frowned for a moment as he felt the new weights in his hand. The tall elf had entrusted him with this ring and Elrond felt honored but also guilty as this ring didn't belong to him and had come to him through the dead of someone he held close to his heart. Without him around the stars wouldn't shine as brightly as before..
And even though he knew the one-ring was now in mortal hands, he prayed that the fighting would be over and peace would once again reign over Middle earth and that the wish of his friend would come true.

Her eyes closed as she softly sobbed, they had won the war but she had lost her love. It had been some moons ago when she had met him for the last time under the silver moonlight. She had promised she would wait for him to come back from the battle. And even though they both knew the odds he had faced, he had promised her he would do anything to return to her. The promise had been empty and they both had known it, he was an elf lord and thus he saw it as his duty to lead his people to battle. And that duty had been more important than her, than she had understood it and now she still did, despite the growing pain in her heart.

They didn't need to tell her that Gil Galad was dead, she had known this from the moment he had left and now she saw it in Elrond's face once more. The Herald looked dark and it was like he aged a hundred years in the short time span. She looked at him and their eyes met, and than he looked to the ground. She turned around and ran away as far as she could, letting the others deal with their own loss as no one could mend hers.

That night she looked at the stars and smiled softly as she remembered how he taught her the names of them. She had loved those stolen moments, away from the court away from the prying eyes. That day she had run up the balcony where she has said goodbye to him and made her vow to follow to which ever end he would go.
As she lied back on the pillows to let her head rest she saw a new star that she hadn't seen before. It was a new one that shined so brightly that the light of the rest seemed to be dimmer than before. Foolishly she tried to reach out her hand as if it beckoned her to follow him to new places. A smile appeared on her face as she closed her eyes and dreamt of the world beyond that silverlight. She knew that new star was reminder of the vow she had made and without any fear she waited for it to guide her.
With one last breath she passed the threshold to go into that new realm and into the hall of Mandos where he was waiting for her, to look at the stars once more.
