Just Yesterday
Just yesterday, I watched him laugh at a joke
Wacthed him arrest a suspect,
listening to the familiar click of the handcuffs slide shut
Heard him make a wisecrack about something
Watched him write up a report
Just yesterday, we walked down the street
Talking, joking
Sat at a bar and watched him drink a club soda
Got in the car and hear him curse traffic
Climbed stairs in an apartment building,
complaining about him being old
I think he'd rather be here and old,
than there and dead
Just yesterday, I argued with him about a case
Disputed about why one guy might have done it
and how another guy did
Said how he might be getting a little gray for the job
Listened as he retorted he was young as he wanted, and needed
Just yesterday, I listened to him say
'I'll be doing this job from my wheelchair'
I doubt he can do it from his grave
