Shockingly Healthy Ch. 2
Story Start: Aldera Elementary
"You're being apprenticed to Recovery Girl?!" Izuku exclaimed the next day. If his eyes got any wider, I'm sure they'd fall out, standard human biology or not.
I nodded as I hiked up my book bag, ignoring all of the students now looking towards us at Izuku's exclamation. He hadn't shouted it to the heavens thankfully but he had still been louder than normal. There was more than one jealous look sent my way but again, I ignored them as I said "I'll be going to UA for lessons every Sunday afternoon from now until I attend the school, then when I'm part of the Hero Course I'll be having an extra hour with her each day barring special circumstances."
Izuku gained a confused look and asked "Why do you need to be with her so often, doesn't your Quirk show you what needs to be fixed?"
I shook my head and said "It's not a good idea to not be able to patch someone up the old fashioned way if I can't use my Quirk for some reason Izuku. Heroics being what it is, it's possible I could wind up in a danger zone without a ready power source nearby and my crank generators destroyed. If that happens I need to know how to keep people stable until they can reach a medical center."
"Oh." Izuku said then devolved into a muttering session as we continued into the school.
The rumor mill was it's usual efficient self and by the time lunch came around the whole school was aware that one of its students had already caught the eye of a Pro Hero. I did my best to ignore the local celebrity status I now had because of that, hoping it would die down relatively quickly. (Though I admit I enjoyed the way Bakugo had a twitching vein visible as he grit his teeth every time the subject came up.) After all, with these lessons being added to my already busy schedule I didn't have time to deal with those who suddenly wanted me to join their groups when before they kept their distance due to my friendship with Izuku. As Stain would say, bunch of fakes the lot of them.
Time Skip: One Month Into Apprenticeship
Recovery Girl met me at the UA Barrier like usual when I arrived for my lessons. What was unusual was that Principal Nezu was standing next to her looking rather serious.
Giving the pair a nod of greeting, I said "Good Afternoon Principal Nezu, Sensei, is there something wrong?"
"Not wrong per se Kira, but we were hoping your quirk could help with a Pro Hero who's injuries have so far been…difficult to treat." Nezu stated.
I nodded at that and asked "Not enough stamina for Sensei's Quirk to work with?"
As we began moving through the campus Recovery Girl grunted and said "Partly that, but mostly there's just not enough left to work with for my Quirk to be effective."
I winced at that and said "Sounds like we're lucky this Pro is still alive for me to try to help."
"Quite." Principal Nezu stated with a frown.
Once we reached the infirmary, Recovery Girl handed me a folder and said "Before we can allow you to see the patient, we need you to sign a NDA."
I nodded at that having expected it. Reporters loved juicy stories about injured Heroes, trying to find any fault on the Heroes' part for why they were now injured.
What I was not expecting after I signed the NDA was for FREAKING ALL MIGHT of all people to be the one looking towards me while sitting on one of the beds of the infirmary, a massive scar on his sunken in left chest. A moment after I realized who I was treating I began immediately cursing in English, throwing in a few choice words of Russian, Spanish, and Czech for good measure.
"I should wash your mouth out with soap for that young man, but I believe I can let it pass this once." Recovery Girl stated as she moved past me. Nezu chittered in amusement and All Might let out a chuckle of his own before he winced and gave a harsh sounding cough.
Seeing blood coating the fist he had raised to his mouth snapped me into business mode and I power walked over to his side, putting a sparking hand on his side as I asked "How'd this happen? The only fight you had recently that you seemed to have trouble with was Toxic Chainsaw but this doesn't look like a chainsaw or poison wound."
I winced at the damage my Quirk showed me. Stomach was gone, as was a good chunk of the top section of the intestines, left lung barely had anything left, severe damage to the heart, ribs were a patchwork of cracks due to still healing from where they had been caved in, and finally, if I was reading what my own Quirk was showing right, the great star of energy representing All Might's Quirk for lack of a better word was 'sputtering' as it did its best to keep working despite the severe damage.
All Might grimaced and said "It wasn't Toxic Chainsaw. We did our best to suppress news of the fight that caused this."
I nodded in understanding. When no further explanation seemed to be coming, I let out a huff and pulled my hand away as I said "Well, this is going to take more juice than I currently have stored, and I don't think my crank generators will cut it. And I don't even know if Regenerator can fix whatever is going on with your own Quirk since I've never had to try to heal Quirks before."
All Might blinked and asked "You can see what my Quirk is?"
There was a tension in All Might's voice but I ignored it as I shrugged and said "All I'm getting is that it's a massive energy reservoir, not exactly a surprise given how strong you are." I frowned and said "Best description I can give you for what's happening on that front is that it's like an engine that's sputtering as it's trying to run."
"I see." All Might said, seeming to lose that tension even as he gained a pensive look.
I heard the door to the infirmary entrance swing open. A few moments later, a pair of UA worker robots rolled in a massive row of double stacked super capacitors about twelve feet long into the room. Nezu gestured from where he was standing on a chair to the large batteries and stated "These should provide you with enough electricity to get the job done. In the unlikely chance they aren't though, we have a second set ready for you to use as well."
I nodded at that and said "Let's hope they remain unneeded." Picking up the wires that were attached to the super capacitors, I attached the velcro strap the leads were attached to around my left wrist before I flicked the switch by the wires. I twitched at the rush of electricity I was feeling before I walked back over to All Might's side.
Giving the Symbol of Peace a dead serious look, I said "I think you're going to want something to bite down on for this."
"Way ahead of you Sonny." My Master on the ways of healing said as she came over with a thick piece of rolled leather.
All Might stuck the roll in his mouth then gave me a thumbs up. I took in a deep breath then did an an abbreviated swing of my head to the side before I placed my right hand over the scar and activated Regenerator.
Immediately All Might's jaw clenched around the rolled leather as his limbs tensed up and his fists clenched hard enough I heard the joints of his fingers pop. I soon gained a frown of focus as dad's part of my Quirk guided me in first strengthening All Might's heart before working on regrowing the majority of his left lung. After that was repairing the intestine before regrowing the entire stomach. Second to last was giving the ribs some help in finishing healing, removing the multitude of cracks in them.
That just left the Pro's Quirk. I experimentally 'poked' at it with Regenerator only to flinch back when the star seemed to send a spike back at me. Giving another quick head swing to the right, I set my face into a look of firm determination and metaphorically grabbed the Quirk with both hands and flooded it with the remains of the electricity from the super capacitors.
"WOAH!" All Might let out a yelp around the roll of leather but quickly shook his head when RG asked if something was wrong.
I meanwhile narrowed my eyes as I focused even more on his Quirk and began finding where the hundreds, if not thousands of spikes seemed to join with All Might's physical body, able to see how the energy was sinking into the 'cracks' I could now see in them, allowing me to direct the healing energy so that instead of going over all of it and doing minimal work to more effective work in a smaller area. It took AGES, but slowly the cracks began to disappear. But I had only managed to fix a measly six of the spikes before I ran out of extra charge and my bio electricity started taking up the slack.
Pulling away with a short gasp, I muttered "Damnit, I'm going to need to be hooked up to a damn nuclear reactor to fix the rest of the damage in the Quirk!"
"I wouldn't worry too much about it Kira." Nezu said, earning my attention. When I looked over at him, he was smiling as he continued "Now that All Might has been fully healed physically by your wonderful Quirk we have plenty of time to work on his own Quirk in stages." He then cocked his head and stated "That said, we do have a second bank of capacitors available for your use today if you feel up to continuing."
I flicked my eyes to the clock and saw that I had been working for half an hour. Biting my lower lip for a moment, I nodded and said "Yeah, I think I can keep going for now, Plus Ultra and all that."
Nezu beamed and cheered "That's the spirit!"
And that was how a half hour healing session with the Symbol of Peace was added to my Sunday classes. I just wish it didn't take so damn long to fix just ten of those spikes.
Time Skip: Two Weeks Later
I was on my way back from my latest lesson with Recovery Girl when it happened, and I was honestly surprised it took so long. Before I reached the train station a group of five rough looking people came out of an alleyway, three men and two women. All of them had clear reptile mutations and a tattoo on their right arms of a cobra with its hood up while wrapped around a heart (biological, not romanticized). My eyes narrowed as they strutted towards me and I said "If you assholes are looking for a bit of fun picking on a kid, I suggest you find your entertainment somewhere else."
That got laughter from the obvious gang and one of the men said "Nah, as fun as that sounds, this is business, not pleasure. So come along quietly kid and we won't have to rough you up."
That was all I needed to hear and the moment they got close I leapt forward and slammed a punch into the guy's groin. The guy staggered back with a hand over his family jewels but I was already latching onto one of the woman's arms and zapping her. As she went down spasming, the rest of the group recovered from their surprise and rushed towards me only for one of them to be wrapped up in a thin but strong strand of cloth that yanked him up into the air and the other two were slammed into a wall by a loud shout.
"Shit, Heroes!" The guy I nut shot shouted.
"No duh, dumbass, we're not even ten blocks from UA." I snarked even as I pulled out a taser and shot him with it, the prongs catching him in the chest and dropping him just like the woman who's arm I still had my hand around.
It was at that point Eraserhead and Present Mic revealed themselves, Present Mic giving me a thumbs up as he said "Nicely done there Little Listener!"
"Police are on their way." Eraserhead said as he took his hand away from the com bead in his right ear.
The pair were my assigned shadows while I traveled back home from UA. As Aunt Lissa had said just over a month ago, a kid with a healing Quirk made for a tempting target for certain Villain groups, and there was substantially less foot traffic in this area at this time of the day. Still…
Shaking my head as the two Pros secured the five would be kidnappers, I said "These guys sure didn't act like they knew what they were doing, they all came from that one alley instead of surrounding me before making their move, and they were way too cocky on the approach."
Eraserhead nodded and said "Low level thugs hired to test the waters no doubt." The five shot glares at us and opened their mouths to no doubt retort only to find the lower halves of their faces tightly wrapped in his Capture Scarf as he drawled out "You can talk all you want in the police station, for now though shut it."
The police soon arrived and took our statements. I got a verbal 'warning' for using my Quirk on the woman I grabbed without a Hero's License but given this was clearly self defense it was equally clear that was just lip service to the rules.
The five were hauled off to the station but I would later learn from Principal Nezu that nothing solid would come from their questioning. Too many intermediaries between who actually wanted me and the gang. Even the money they had been paid had been seemingly (and almost literally) bounced through every country with an established electronic banking system (sometimes up to three times through the bigger countries) before being deposited in the leader's account. The cybercrime division would keep working at it but the chances of getting any answers soon weren't looking good.
My family was of course notified, but otherwise I kept the incident to myself. For one thing, Izuku would totally have a meltdown from worry about the incident. And for another it would cause needless drama with everyone at school bugging me to know about 'how I fought off a gang of Villains'. My parents and aunt were just glad that they had gotten me the taser for self defense after I had so publicly helped Aunt Lissa and the other EMTs last month.
Time Skip: Two Years Later
"Wait, Young Midoriya is Quirkless yet still wants to be a Hero?" All Might asked, a note of something in voice as he asked that.
I looked up from where I was STILL working on healing the downright absurd amount of damage to the connections between his Quirk and physical body. Even after two years of healing sessions the Quirk was still imitating a sputtering engine. Raising an eyebrow, I asked "Did I really never mention before that Izuku is Quirkless?"
The pair of us had begun talking after the third session. Better than just sitting in silence as Regenerator did its work. Mostly it had been All Might asking about my week and in turn explaining some of the villains he had taken down. Since Izuku and I shared activities outside of school training as a Hero All Might had learned of him fairly quickly.
All Might shook his head and said "Strangely enough, you have not. I had just assumed that he had an intelligence booster for a Quirk given how smart you say he is and his habit of analyzing Quirks and Heroes' Support Gear."
"Oh, well now you know otherwise." I said before I shrugged and continued "Yeah, Izuku's Quirkless, but he's not going to let that stop him. And considering your own Sidekick doesn't have a Quirk that can aid him in combat I'm pretty sure he'll be able to make the cut, especially if he can get some Support Gear to help. Dad's even promised Izuku he'll make him a jump booster pack like mine if he makes it into a Hero Course."
The prototype dad made for me was fun to use when traveling across rooftops, even if it could only do sustained flight for five minutes before running out of juice. That was mostly a size limitation though, Dad would have a bigger one ready for me by the time I graduated that could handle sustained flight in an emergency for longer than that.
"I see." All Might said with a contemplative look, becoming silent for the rest of the time we had together.
Time Skip: Three Days Later, Aldera Middle School
I eyed Izuku from where he was sitting the next row over. The kid was vibrating in his seat like a squirrel fed a can of double expresso and strapped down so that it couldn't go anywhere. I wasn't the only one to notice either, the other students and even the teachers would occasionally give him strange looks throughout the day. It was pissing Bakugo off even more than he usually was, but really, who cared about that burning trash can?
Annoyingly, Izuku didn't explain what had him so excited until after school and even then all he said was that he wanted me to meet someone.
He then proceeded to drag me to Dagobah beach…which was more like an unsanctioned landfill with all of the crap that got washed ashore and the people who dumped their own trash there. Izuku led me in between piles of trash before we found what looked like a perfectly good recliner, if you took away the fact the sides had been scratched up to hell and back. Clearly it had belonged to a cat owner. It was the person sitting in the recliner that got my attention though.
Seeing someone who 'looked' like All Might wearing cargo pants and short sleeved tee shirt sitting in it, I stiffened and asked "Izukuuuu, what did I tell you about those with imposter Quirks?"
'All Might' laughed and stood up as he said "While I can certainly appreciate your caution Young Kira, it is indeed I! As proof, during our healing session two weeks ago we had discussed you're test for the next belt in your MMA lessons."
My tense form relaxing was in direct contrast to Izuku's stiffening as he looked at me in complete betrayal and asked "You healed All Might at UA two weeks ago and didn't say anything?!"
"Secrecy Contract." I stated flatly and Izuku gave a quiet 'Oh' of understanding.
All Might chuckled and stood up as he said "He's been helping me for much longer than that Young Midoriya, and you should thank him since he actually pointed me in your direction when he informed of your lack of a Quirk three days ago, which makes you the perfect choice for something I've been looking for these last couple of years. Now, I must ask the pair of you not to freak out about what I will show you two."
With that All Might was obscured in a smoke cloud. When it dispersed, All Might had lost six inches, his arms and torso losing a good chunk of his muscle mass (though still well muscled for base humans), and his face became more angular. In short, he went from Olympian Deity to Olympian Athlete.
As Izuku stuttered in surprise, I instead eyed All Might with pursed lips and said "Well, I'd say that explains why your Quirk has connections to your physical body rather than being a seamless merging, it's got an on off switch rather than constantly empowering you."
All Might nodded and sat back in the recliner as he said "Indeed Young Kira, that and the fact that it originally wasn't my Quirk."
My brain's gears slipped as I asked "Say what now?" Izuku was looking equally stunned beside me.
All Might became completely serious as he said "When reporters and interviewers ask about my Quirk, I deflect. The reason why is because my Quirk is special, it is one that can be passed down from one person to another." All Might's right hand rose up and a ball of shifting light formed in it as he said "It is called One For All, and I'm the Eighth User."
"One For All." Izuku slowly repeated, sounding almost in a trance.
From there All Might explained how the stockpile and transfer Quirk had come to be, how he, an originally Quirkless teenager caught the eye of the Seventh User and took up the torch, how he became injured fighting and defeating the man who was the cause of the Quirk being made in the first place, a Quirk Leech who had apparently been around since the Dawn of Quirks.
All Might nodded to me and said "That is where Young Kira here comes in. About a month and a half after I was injured, Recovery Girl felt he was trustworthy enough to be brought in, though he wasn't told any of this. Regenerator fixed what conventional medical science and Recovery could not, repairing and even regrowing my organs in a single healing session. What has proven harder to fix have been the connections between One For All and my body. Even after two years of healing sessions, he has still only been able to fix a fraction of a fraction of them. Unfortunately, that damage has translated to how long I can use One For All. It used to be that I had no problem keeping it on for however long I was awake, my record of which was sixty two hours and some change during a particularly bad rescue operation. But now I'm down to twenty two hours of continuous use at best before needing about ten hours of recovery time, and it's only going to get worse down the line."
All Might pointed at Izuku as he said "Which is where you come in Young Midoriya."
"Me?!" Izuku asked startled as he pointed towards himself.
All Might nodded and said "There will come a time, likely within the next five years at the extreme max where I won't be able to keep One For All active for longer than a couple of hours. When that time comes it'll be time to pass the torch, and I believe that you will be the one to accept it."
Izuku sputtered for a moment and said "S-surely there are people more worthy of being given your quirk?!"
All Might gave a small nod as he said "It's likely that there are other people who could be considered 'worthy' of this power, yes. However, they all would have Quirks already, which unfortunately automatically disqualifies them." Izuku and I gained looks of confusion and All Might sighed as he slumped a little in the recliner before he leaned forward, putting his forearms on his knees as he explained "It wasn't easy, but I've managed to track down who the previous users were before my Master. Most of them died relatively quickly fighting All For One and his forces. However, the Fourth User, knowing he would not be able to defeat All For One, secluded himself to cultivate One For All. For eighteen years, he held onto the Quirk, but it took a tremendous toll on him. It depleted his life force and he passed away from old age at forty years old."
Izuku looked horrified at this but I frowned as I crossed my arms and stated "But you've been a Pro Hero for much longer than that and yet you're not suffering from the same fate."
All Might pointed at me as he said "Exactly. I believe that the normal human body cannot handle multiple Quirks so the only way to pass on One For All without dire consequences down the line is to give it to someone who is Quirkless."
My frown grew as I said "You do realize that with how rare it is for people to be born Quirkless now finding someone who is Quirkless to be the Tenth when Izuku retires is going to be damn near impossible right?"
All Might nodded and said "I am aware of that, yes, though it might be for the best. With how long I have had to cultivate it, along with however long Izuku's Hero Career turns out to be, it is quite possible that no one would be able to handle One For All's power at that point in time. As it is, Young Midoriya, if you agree we'll need to ensure that you are at peak health and fitness when it comes time to pass the Torch to you, and even then we'll have to work with the smallest of outputs at the beginning."
Izuku gained an uncertain look and bit his lip. After a few moments he looked towards me. Seeing the question in his eyes, I shook my head and said "This is your decision Izuku, I can't help you make it. I'm pretty sure the only reason why I was even told this is because as the one working on healing All Might's Quirk and your best friend I'd be able to connect the dots and this keeps me from asking questions I shouldn't."
All Might confirmed that and Izuku looked down. It took him a minute of two of hard thought but at the end of it, he nodded to himself before he looked up with determined eyes and said "Alright, when it comes time I'll become the Ninth User of One For All."
END
