Hi everyone. Two weeks ago I suddenly had an idea for a Halloween story and this is it. I wish I had started it sooner, because what started out as a short story has grown into a multi-chapter one and I am now rushing to get it published in time for Halloween. Thanks to this I'm worried it may not be as polished as it could be. But if I had taken longer it would probably be next Halloween before it got posted!
Anyway, the first part of the story will have ghostly occurrences, creepy crawlies, some dark humour, as well as some, not overly graphic, sexual content. Oh! And a voyeuristic ghost. While it does start out as just a haunted house, as Yugi investigates the house and its past occupants, it will become a mystery with quite a sad ending.
Disclaimer: I do not own Yugioh.
Chapter 1.
Our New Home.
It was a mild, bright October day, when Yugi Muto and his wife Anzu moved into the house.
Smiling, Anzu clutched Yugi's arm. "Our first home together," she said excitedly. The couple had been married for three months, but had so far been juggling their time as a newly-wed couple between her parents house and his grandfather's place.
Grinning, Yugi freed his arm from her grip and slid it around her waist, pulling her close. "Yeah, and a bargain, too. I can't believe we got it so cheaply." Not that he was not complaining; it was not every day that a three bedroom detached property came on the market in Domino, let alone one that was affordable. Apparently it had been empty for over a year and the current owner was desperate to sell, hence the price.
Anzu threaded her arms around her husband's torso and kissed his cheek. "Maybe we could start a family," she said, giggling.
His eyes widened. "Are you sure?! I thought you wanted to wait?" He remembered her saying that she wanted to wait a couple of years, especially while her dancing career was on the up.
"Maybe in a few months, once we've finished decorating and have settled in," she said. "What do you think?"
His response was enthusiastic. "Yes! Definitely!" he beamed, leaning in to kiss her. However, they were interrupted by a noise from behind.
"Beep, beep! Outta the way you two lovebirds!" The couple turned, to see their friend, Katsuya Jonouchi, struggling up the path carrying an armchair haphazardly on his shoulders.
"Don't you dare drop that Jonouchi!" Anzu warned, as they stepped aside to let him pass.
"Meh, rather than give orders you could help!" Jonouchi retorted. "We've got a ton of stuff to unload."
"Hey! Yugi," their other friend, Hiroto Honda shouted. "Come and give a hand with this sofa, will ya!"
Yugi jumped to attention. "Yup! I'm on it," he said, jogging over to his friend, who was balancing one end of the second hand sofa on the tailgate of the van, trying to lift it down. It would not budge because one of the casters on the base of the sofa was stuck on the lip of the tailgate. Yugi freed the end of the sofa that was stuck and lowered it down. The pair then took an end each and lugged it up the garden path and into the house.
Meanwhile, Anzu went into the van to retrieve a box of her crockery items that she did not want the men breaking.
None of them bothered to look up at the bedroom windows. If they had they would have seen a shadowy figure watching them while they worked. The shadowy figure smirked. So, it looked like he was going to have some new company. He wondered how long would this lot last before he frightened them away.
::::::::::::
The friends worked hard. Several more boxes and items of furniture were unloaded from the van, which Honda had borrowed from work, and placed in the rooms in which they belonged.
"That's the lot!" Honda exclaimed, bringing the last box out from the back of the van. He put it down on the driveway and wiped the sweat from his brow.
The other three nodded, relieved that they could now relax a bit.
"Once you've taken that one in, I'll see if I can find the kettle to make us some tea," said Anzu,
Nodding, Honda lifted the box up and carried it into the house. Jonouchi followed him, leaving Yugi and Anzu standing on the driveway.
Anzu noticed him grinning at her. "What? She said, suspiciously.
"I was just thinking, that since it's tradition in some places, I should carry you over the threshold." Before she had chance to protest, he scooped her off her feet and into his arms, bridal style, causing her to shriek.
"Yugi! Put me down before you drop me!" she yelled, slapping him on the shoulder.
"Stop wriggling or I will drop you!" he retorted, stumbling in through the open door, where he clumsily lowered his wriggling wife to the floor.
"That was not funny," she grumbled, pouting. "And we're not newly weds. We've been married for three months."
"But it's our first house together!" he replied, defending his actions. "I thought it would be nice."
"Yeah, well, it wasn't nice for me. You nearly smacked my head on the door frame."
"Only because you were struggling!"
Having placed the last box carefully on the kitchen floor, Honda stood up and stretched his back out. "Hey! Are you two having your first argument?" he called out in amusement.
"No!" Yugi said, pouting, while at the same time Anzu said, "Yes!" also pouting.
"Hey! I've found the kettle, and a packet of Oreo's," said Jonouchi. "But I've got no idea where the mugs are, and the teapot's broken."
"Not my new teapot?!" Anzu shrieked. "I told you to be careful, Jonouchi!"
"It wasn't me!" he argued. "You were the one who carried that box in!"
Anzu pouted at him. "Well, I didn't break it. And the mugs should be in the bottom of that box over there." She pointed at another box labelled, Crockery. Yugi went over to open it.
Meanwhile, Jonouchi had found the teabags.
Given the state of the teapot, Anzu made the tea in the mugs rather than in a pot, while Honda wiped the dust off the dining table and chairs, which the previous owner had kindly left behind.
The friends sat around the dining table to drink their tea and eat Oreo's.
"Nice of them to leave you this table," said Jonouchi, patting its surface. "Decent quality, too!"
Honda gazed around the spacious kitchen/dining room. "The décor needs a bit of modernising, but I think you guys are gonna be happy here," he said.
Yugi and Anzu both nodded. "I think we're going to love it here," said Yugi, looking at Anzu for confirmation. She smiled, nodding.
"We are," she agreed.
"Wonder why this place was so cheap?" observed Jonouchi.
"Like Honda said, the décor is a bit dated," said Anzu.
"If you want help decorating, I'm ya man," Jonouchi offered. "I'm a dab hand at carpentry, and I won't charge you the earth," he stated proudly.
Anzu giggled. "I'm hoping you won't charge anything at all if we offer to feed you," she said jokingly.
Jonouchi's face lit up. "Now that's my kind of offer."
Honda snickered. "He'll do anything for food." His comment earned him a sideways kick to the shin under the table. "Ow!"
"That's enough!" Anzu jokingly scolded. "No fighting in my house!"
Jonouchi opened his mouth to say that he didn't start it, but instead said, "Still don't understand why it was so cheap though. Even with the shitty décor."
"Maybe it's haunted, blrrrrr…." Honda said in a scary voice, waggling his fingers in Jonouchi's face.
"Fuck off dude!" Jonouchi snapped, shuddering. "Course it ain't haunted! There's no such thing as ghosts, is there Yug?" Not sounding too sure.
"No. Of course there isn't Jonouchi," Yugi reassured. At least, he hoped there wasn't.
Quickly wanting to change the subject, Jonouchi had an idea "Hey! We should have a house warming party," he suggested.
Yugi raised an eyebrow. "Err… We?"
Jonouchi cringed. "I mean you. At the weekend. Whaddaya say?"
Yugi pondered over it and looked at Anzu. "This weekend..." He scratched his chin. "Anzu?" He did not want to invite everyone over without her consent.
"Could we wait a couple of weeks?" she said. "I want to settle in a bit first."
None of them spotted the shadowy figure watching from the hallway. He did not want to go in with the full horror package immediately. He wanted to suss his new housemates out and get to know them first. It was unlikely, but he might even decide he liked them enough to let them stay for a while. But if they started getting on his nerves then he would have to make them leave – like the previous people, who had fled in terror.
::::::::::::
"I thought they'd never go," said Anzu, heaving a big sigh as Yugi closed the front door.
"Don't be so mean!" Yugi teased, putting his arms around her, kissing the end of her nose. "They've been a great help. It would've cost us a fortune to hire a removals company."
Anzu shrugged. "I guess. But when Jonouchi asked if the spare room was going begging, that was the final straw."
"I take it you're not keen on him moving in as a lodger then?" he tentatively enquired, with a nervous chuckle. He had not said anything to Anzu, but Jonouchi had asked him if he could move in with them. Yugi had not said 'yes', but had not exactly said 'no' either.
"No!" she said assertively. "Are you?!"
He shook his head. "Not if you don't want him living here. But I am looking forward to our friends staying over for games night."
"Exactly!" Anzu said, adding, "Besides, he would eat us out of house and home." She freed herself from Yugi's arms and pivoted away and towards the stairs. "I'm going to unpack the bedding. Maybe you could but the bed together so we have something to sleep on tonight?" She moved so fast that the invisible figure on the stairs did not have time to get out of the way and she passed right through him. The contact sent a strange feeling through the ghost and his reaction was to retreat through the wall.
Anzu stopped on the stairs and shivered. That was weird! It felt like someone stepped on her grave.
Wondering why she had suddenly stopped, Yugi called out, "Are you alright Anzu?"
She turned to look back down at him standing in the hallway. "Yeah," she nodded. "I suddenly felt a cold draught. Is the heating on?"
He knew it was not, but instinctively touched the radiator anyway. He shook his head. "No. It's only early October. It's a pretty warm day."
Anzu shrugged. The chill had passed, and she wondered if she had really even felt it. "I think it's because I'm tired and hungry. Do you want to order a takeaway later?"
"Yes. What do you fancy?"
"Pizza?"
"Sure," he nodded. "Let's make a start on the bedroom and then order it in about…" he checked his watch. "An hour?"
"Sounds good," she agreed. She turned away and continued up the stars. Yugi followed.
In the bedroom, Anzu began unpacking bedding and clothing, placing them in the wardrobe they had borrowed from her old bedroom, which would do until the new fitted wardrobes they had on order arrived.
Yugi got a pack of screwdrivers and began assembling the double sized, wooden futon base. Again, the futon was borrowed from Anzu's parents until they could get a bed of their own.
As soon as the bed was put together and made, Anzu flopped down with a resounding sigh. "Ahhh… I could fall asleep right now!"
Yugi got onto the bed beside her. Propped up on his elbow, he looked down at her lovingly. "Do you want that pizza yet?"
"Mm.." she nodded.
"Or," he said, seductively trailing his fingers along her neck and collarbone. "We could celebrate moving in first, if you like?"
"What would you like to do to celebrate?" She giggled, seductively slipping her hand inside his tee-shirt and up his back. He felt all hot and sweaty from an afternoon of carrying heavy stuff and from assembling the bed but she did not mind.
Kissing her lips, he moved his hand inside her top to touch her breasts. Anzu responded with a moan and kneaded his back with one hand and fisted his hair with the other.
A shadow on the ceiling watched with interest when the couple stripped and started having sex.
Listening to the man grunting, and watching his bare bottom bobbing up and down as he thrust into the woman was amusing. Hearing the woman moaning the man's name, her lithe, agile legs wrapped around his waist made the ghost a little envious. That was the problem with being dead – pleasures of the flesh were… difficult, if not impossible, when you were non-corporeal.
But there were other ways for a ghost to get some thrills.
Time to have some fun.
Bump. Bump. Bump. "Yuuu...gii…" the ghost moaned, taking the piss out of the woman.
Yugi stilled and Anzu tensed. "Did you hear that Yugi?"
He nodded slowly, and gazed around the room. "It wasn't you, was it?" he asked.
"No! Of course not!" she said indignantly. "Do I sound like man with a deep voice?!"
"I don't know. It's difficult to tell when you're close to climax," he said cheekily.
"And you were grunting in my ear like hog," she said, "so I might have been hearing things."
"This futon's a bit rickety. It was probably that making the bumping noise," Yugi concluded.
"Hmm.." Anzu agreed. "I'm so close. Let's finish off and then order pizza."
"Okay." He started rocking his hips, gently. "How's that feel?" he asked.
Anzu moved in time with him. "Oh! Yugi! Nice…." she cooed.
"Nice…." echoed the ghost, making bumping noises on the ceiling in time to their thrusts, and trying not to snicker.
"Whatever," Anzu breathed, thinking Yugi was messing around. "Keep going." Too close to be able to stop, Yugi did just that.
They both climaxed together, and Yugi collapsed against her hot, panting body with a satisfied moan.
They stayed like that for a few minutes, breathing in time with each other as their heart rates and euphoria slowly came back to normal.
Yugi lifted his head and lovingly looked into her eyes. "How was that Mrs Muto?"
"Out of ten, I would say…. Nine, Mister Muto."
"What?! Only nine? I'm offended."
She smiled and kissed his nose. "If I was to score you a ten you would get complacent."
He huffed. "I should pull out. Where are the tissues?"
Anzu looked across the room. "Ah… I don't think I unpacked them yet."
"Oops!" He cringed, trying not to make a mess on the clean sheets as he carefully removed himself from her. However, at the same moment he felt a sudden icy breath run down the length of his spine to his bum crack. Jumping, he shrieked and turned around suddenly, to see… nothing.
"Yugi? What's the matter?"
Groaning at the mess he just made on the bedding, he grabbed his boxers and pulled them on, hoping to prevent any further leakage from getting on the sheets as his erection subsided. "I don't know. I.. I know this sounds stupid, but I felt something."
"Well," she giggled. "We both felt the earth move."
He shook his head. "Not that, something else. Like an icy chill on my back."
Anzu frowned. "Like the one I felt on the stairs?"
"I don't know. Possibly." Shrugging it aside, he stood up and pulled on his clothing. "I'm starving. Let's order pizza."
::::::::::::
While Yugi was ordering pizza, Anzu took a quick shower. Cobwebs hung from the ceiling and the bathroom desperately needed modernising. The shower was one of those showers that attached to a mixer tap, and after adjusting the taps she stepped under the rather feeble spray only for it to go icy cold. "Eep!" Cursing, she stepped back and fiddled with the taps again until the water felt comfortable. It then went too hot, before settling down again to a more comfortable temperature again. "Flipping shower," she muttered to herself, vowing to make sure that a new power shower was one of the first jobs on their list.
With the water temperature still fluctuating, Anzu shampooed her hair and washed her body as quickly as possible. She shut off the water and reached out for her towel, only to find it was not hanging on the rail where she had put it.
Frowning, she scanned the steamed up room for her towel. She spotted it on the floor beside the bath, in a puddle of water that had leaked over the side of the bath where the ratty old shower curtain had not done its job. Looking from the rail to where the towel had landed, Anzu was a little confused as to how it had managed to fall five feet away from where it was hung. But she was tired, so maybe she dropped it there by mistake.
The shadow watched the woman, Anzu, as he had heard her called, shower. She had not seen him levitate her towel and drop it where water was cascading over the side of the bath through the gap under the shower curtain.
She had a beautiful, lithe figure – she looked like an athlete with how lean and muscular her legs were. When she bent down to pick the towel off the floor, he was rewarded with a rather nice view.
Scowling at her soggy towel, Anzu was unaware of the pair of eyes watching her from behind as she bent down.
"Euw, yuk!" she grumbled, pouting at the soggy towel.
Anzu shivered as she tried to dab herself dry on the half that was not too wet. It could be her imagination, but the temperature in the bathroom had really dropped.
Wiping the condensation off the bathroom cabinet, Anzu peered at her face in the mirror to check she had managed to wash off all her mascara without leaving a black smudge. She smiled when she thought she saw the fuzzy outline of Yugi in the mirror standing behind her.
But as she turned around and asked, "Has the pizza arrived?" there was no sign of him and the bathroom door was still closed. In fact, it occurred to her that she had not heard it open, so there was no way he could have come in and then left before she could turn to face him.
Feeling a bit spooked, Anzu ran to the bedroom and grabbed a clean towel to finish drying her hair and body.
Yugi called up the stairs, "Pizza will be here in about five minutes. Don't be too long!"
"I won't," Anzu called back, hastily pulling on some clean undies, a pair of jogging bottoms, woolly socks and a warm sweatshirt. After running a brush through her wet hair, she went down to the kitchen, where Yugi was removing a bottle of Australian sparking wine from the freezer compartment of the fridge.
"Oh, hey!" he said, smiling. "This feels nice and chilled. It was a good idea of Jonouchi's to stick it in the freezer to chill it quickly. You want some?"
"You bet I do!" replied Anzu. "I just had the worst shower ever. To make things worse my towel somehow jumped off the rail and flew across the bathroom into a puddle of water," she grumbled.
Yugi's eyes widened. "There isn't a water leak, is there?"
Anzu shook her head. "No. The shower curtain doesn't fit properly. Can we make replacing the shower urgent?"
"Yeah. Sure." Yugi popped the champagne cork and carefully filled two wine glasses. He passed one to Anzu. "To us! And to many happy years together in our new home."
"I'll drink to that!" came a deep, male voice.
Anzu and Yugi both paused mid sip. "Did you say something Yugi?" Anzu asked, even though the voice did not sound like his.
He shook his head. It was only then that he heard music playing on the radio. "It must have been the announcer on there." His eyebrows furrowed, "I didn't turn it on, did you?"
"How could I?" said Anzu shirtily. "I only just came in and I didn't go over to the radio."
"Did you plug it in when you put it on the shelf earlier?" he asked.
"I don't know. I can't remember if I did or not."
"Maybe it was Honda or Jou," Yugi decided.
"Probably," she agreed, and was silent for a moment, before saying, "Yugi. Did you come into the bathroom while I was showering?"
"What?" Did she think he was being a peeping Tom?! "No! I was down here. Why?"
Anzu shook her head. "No reason. I just… Never mind. I must be tired."
Yugi shrugged, putting down his glass so that he could give her a hug. "I love you," he said, gently kissing her temple. She responded by wrapping her arms around him and hugging him tightly.
Her nose wrinkled as she smelt his odour. "You should probably take a shower." He was a bit whiffy.
He cringed, a bit embarrassed. "I know. Sorry. I can smell myself," he said, grimacing.
At the same moment, the doorbell rang. They answered it, thanked the pizza delivery guy and then sat down at the table to eat.
It was starting to get dark so Yugi got up and flicked the light on. Just as he sat back down, the light went off again. Sighing, he got up and went to flick the switch to see if the bulb might have blown. The switch was in the off position. "Hmm," he muttered, thinking it odd but deciding the switch must be faulty. He turned it back on. No sooner he had sat down again, the light went off again.
He turned it back on. Same thing happened again.
"For fuck sake!" he grumbled, moving to get up.
"Just leave it Yugi," said Anzu. "We'll have a romantic meal in the dark instead." The light instantly came back on. "Faulty switch," they both said at the same time.
They carried on eating their pizza. "I'll get Honda to have a look at it. He's good with electrics," said Yugi.
After they had polished off the sparkling wine and finished eating, Yugi went up to take a shower while Anzu put the left over pizza in the fridge for tomorrow. She then set about unpacking some of the other boxes.
She opened one of the kitchen cupboards to put the plates in and screamed, as thousands of tiny insects spilled out, landing on her face, in her hair and going down the inside of her top.
Yugi was stripped off down to his boxers and was brushing his teeth when he heard her scream. Hurriedly spitting out toothpaste, he ran down the stairs and into the kitchen to find her hopping about and flapping madly at herself as if there was something on her.
"Get them off me! Yugi! Help!" she screamed.
He stood and stared at her. "Get what off, Anzu? There's nothing there."
Anzu stopped flapping. He was right. "But I could have sworn…" Where only seconds ago there had been hundreds of beetles, earwigs, woodlice and spiders spilling out of the cupboard and attacking her, there were two dead beetles, a few woodlice and earwigs, and a desiccated daddy long-legs spider on the worktop where she had brushed them from the inside the cupboard with her hand.
Happy Halloween!
Let me know what you think, and I will try and get two more chapters up tomorrow.
