Present Day...

Rosey Doggett knew that something was wrong with her husband when he wouldn't hold Anna's hand walking through the park, and he wouldn't join in any conversations with Monica. And Monica looked as if she felt awkward around him. As if she wasn't quite sure what to say or how to act. Rosey had wanted them to spend this day together and try and be a family.

When she and Frank were back in New York she didn't know how long it would be until she next saw Monica or her granddaughter. It broke her heart that John wouldn't be calling her to organise for them to come and visit. Rosey and Frank Doggett would now be the kind of grandparents that only saw their grandchildren at Christmas and on birthdays.

Monica had felt something change inside her, something somewhere had woken up within her and told her to think of Anna. To make her the number one priority in her life. As Monica's daughter Anna was already her number one priority, but so was John. Now he was gone, and Anna was still here and still needed her mom, more than ever. Monica had gone from not being able to look at Anna to not letting her out of her sight overnight.

She had always believed that there was a deep connection between a mother and her daughter, a connection that went deeper that genes or how well they got along with one another, it was an invisible connection that you could just feel, you just knew that it was there and that it was special. Well Monica wasn't going to let that change, she wanted to be close to Anna, she wanted to show Anna that even though mom's cry, they still love their children.

Whilst walking through the park after having lunch at Anna's favourite diner, she ran

ahead and played on the climbing frame whilst her mom and grandparents sat down on a bench.

"Oh Monica, I'm going to miss you both so much. I only wish our being here these past five days had been under happier circumstances."

"Me too."

"You know that you can call Frank and I anytime, day or night, and if you need us we'll be on the first flight."

"Steady Rosey, I have to think of work you know."

"Frank! This is your family."

"Yeah, and I need my job."

Rosey looked embarrassed by her husband and only Monica knew that his problem was his family. That he had lost his son instead of his daughter in law.

"What time is your flight?"

"Ten thirty tomorrow morning. Can we stop by to say goodbye?"

"I'll drive you to the airport."

"No Monica, we couldn't ask you to do that..."

"I insist. It's not a problem."

Rosey smiled and put her hand on Monica's face.

"You're a very special woman Monica Doggett. Isn't she Frank?"

Frank looked at his wife and then at Monica. He couldn't say anything so he just sort of nodded his head and then turned back to watching Anna. Monica was hurt by his behaviour towards her but there was nothing she could do about it. She turned to look at Anna and suddenly had a bad feeling in her stomach.

She stood up and Rosey did the same wondering what was wrong.

"Monica what is it?"

"She's too high, oh God Anna, be careful... please be careful..."

Her gut feeling paid off as Anna suddenly lost her grip and fell from the climbing frame to the ground below her. Monica felt sick as she ran over to her baby girl wondering what on earth she had done to deserve these things to be happening to her.

June 25th, Mulder Residence...

John had been standing at the window for over twenty minutes waiting for Monica to arrive. It was almost five o'clock and she had called to say she'd meet him to pick Anna up but there was no sign of her and he was getting worried. He didn't know why but for some reason being married to Monica made him worry about her more, made him worry about losing her now that he could lay a claim to her. He had been angry that she had gone off like that not thinking about the repercussions. But now all he wanted was for her to get there so they could go home.

A little before six Monica pulled up on the front and got out of the car. She didn't even

knock on the door before it flew open with a very pale-faced John standing on the other side.

"Where the hell have you been? I've been going out of my mind here!"

"I just needed some time to think, about this case... And then there was some bad traffic, why all the worrying? What's going on, is Anna ok?"

"She's fine. She's fine... I'm sorry."

John hugged Monica and she was surprised by his behaviour as she softly hugged him back. She had never known him to get worried about her like this before they had got married and had Anna. It was sweet, and she loved that he cared so much, but sometimes she worried that he worried too much.

"So what happened in Maryland?"

Dana and Mulder had come to the door having heard Monica's voice.

"Nothing. She hates me, and I didn't pick up anything about her having killed her foster

parents. I think you're wrong about it being an inside job."

John looked at Dana and then back at Monica.

"Mon, the prints on the syringes from the Gooding's bathroom were a match to Mia Dukes. They also found traces of her blood in the trash at the back of the house. I guess they fought back."

"I don't believe it."

"It's true Monica, I spoke to the detective myself and he said they were on their way to

question Mia, I guess you must have just missed them when you left."

Dana was trying to be supportive but in a matter of fact way that told Monica she was only doing this because it was her job. Monica couldn't help but take this personally. And she refused to believe that Mia Dukes had committed murder.

As they all stood staring at one another in the doorway Anna came running down the stairs and to her mom.

"Hey baby, you ready to go home?"

"Uh huh."

Monica picked her up and looked at John, he didn't know what else he could say. The

evidence was there, and he hated it when Monica ignored the evidence because of how she felt personally. Monica walked out to the car and John looked at Dana.

"I'm sorry Dana, thanks for having Anna again Mulder."

"Anytime."

John walked out to the car and Dana and Mulder went back inside. This was far from

over.
