The River
Darkness dines with a chilling breath upon my inky surface.
Enticing the weary and weak of heart farther into the depths.
Lost souls walk without ambition, swept away in my icy tendrils.
Fear fills their eyes.
They do not know what lies ahead.
But I do.
I lap at your ankles in hunger, trying to nudge you swiftly on.
I eagerly wait. I know the horrors that you will soon face.
I urge you faster with every step you take. Only the foolish dare to go slow.
It is better to go quickly and lessen the pain than to fight me and grow tired and weary.
Ease your mind and drift along in my swirling currents.
Topple up waterfalls, soar past waves, and dodge my fireballs and whirlpools.
And if you let me carry you along I'll leave you in the shallows among the stars.
The stars beckon you, calling to take you home.
It is time to leave my icy depths because I cannot go with you.
You've passed my trials. It is time for rest. Leave my misery.
Go away from life.
I am only here to capture the living. To carry them home to the heavens.
For I am the river, not of life, but death.
A/N: Heaven knows what inspired me to write this. My muse has at last returned…for the time being. Hope you liked it. Reviews are nice. Constructive criticism (aka "flames w/ meaning") are most certainly acceptable!
