Present Day, Doggett Residence...

It was almost eleven when Monica walked back into the house. She felt awful as she walked into the living room and saw William and Jack sleeping on the sofa. She could hear Mulder and Dana in the kitchen and so badly wanted to pretend that this hadn't happened. But she owed them an apology and they needed to get home. She walked into the kitchen and they both turned immediately to wait for her to say something.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry..."

"Oh Monica..."

Dana hugged her and they both sat down whilst Mulder watched them. He had so much he wanted to say but he knew that now wasn't the time.

"Anna's sleeping, she's not been down long. She wouldn't move from the window until she said... John had gone... and then she cried because you wouldn't believe her... But she's sleeping now."

"Thanks Dana. You should go, get the boys home."

Dana smiled and nodded her head. Monica smiled back and the two women stood up and moved towards the living room.

"Not exactly how you imagined spending your evening is it? I invite you for dinner and leave you looking after my daughter. Again."

"Monica, this will take time. You're both doing so well. There'll be more days like this, but there'll be good days too."

"More days when my daughter thinks her dead father is standing in her bedroom?"

"Well that's not exactly what I meant..." Monica nodded her head again and Dana put her hand on her shoulder as she turned to collect her children. Mulder couldn't contain himself any longer. He couldn't watch them make a mockery of what Anna had been through, four year old or not.

"What if she was telling the truth?" Dana couldn't believe this. She had sworn him to not say anything. Monica turned to him almost with a smirk on her face thinking he was playing a bad joke.

"What?"

"What if Anna wasn't lying? What if she really did see John in her room?"

"But, but that's impossible."

"Is it? When there's a death in the family there are often visitations made to a loved one,

Dana saw her father when he died."

"Mulder I saw my father almost immediately as he died, John's been gone for over a month..."

"That doesn't matter. I believe that young children are more susceptible to these visits because they have an innocent mind that isn't sceptical of such a phenomena happening. Anna has spent the last month believing that he could come back, tonight he did for her. Because she believed it, she could see it."

"Ok enough. This is ridiculous. John is dead. Anna did not see him in her bedroom."

"What about his gift? Is there any chance you could be pregnant?" Mulder knew he'd crossed the line when both women threw looks of complete horror at him for being so intrusive into Monica's personal life.

"I think we should leave, Mulder could you pick up William. Now." He did as he was told and took William out to the car without saying anything else. Dana stood at the door with Jack sleeping in her arms and was desperate to think of something to say to Monica.

"Monica..."

"It's ok... Go home." Dana hugged her trying not to squash Jack and Monica was alone again. She went up the stairs and looked into Anna's room. She felt like the worst mother in the world. She walked into the room and looked to the window. She pulled the chair from the corner of the room and sat in the window watching her baby sleep. She refused to entertain the idea that there was any truth in what Anna or Mulder had said that night. It wasn't possible.

July 3rd, Silver Spring, Maryland, Gooding Residence...

John took a seat beside Dana and prepared himself for being the calm and in control FBI agent he knew he had to be. He couldn't lose himself in his personal feelings. But as he watched Monica walk into the house he had to bite his tongue to not scream out in protest.

Monica cautiously walked inside and spotted Mia right away. Mia smiled upon seeing her and beckoned her into the house.

"Agent Monica Reyes. Glad you could join us. Come on in, meet everybody." Monica walked further into the house and felt her whole body shiver as she saw Michael, Lucy and Daniel tied up and gagged on the sofa. Casey and Adam were each tied to a kitchen chair also gagged.

"What's going on Mia? Why do you have everyone here?"

"Because I want a family! My mother is dead! And it's because of you! You wouldn't see me last week, you left without even saying goodbye, so I decided to have a little fun with you. Play a little game. I knew that Adam hadn't killed the Gooding's so I pretended to be his alibi, that was a nice thing to do because I know you all had enough against him."

"How do you know Adam didn't do it?"

"Come on Monica, you know better than that. Don't pretend you're not smart."

"You killed them?"

"They wanted to send me away! To my dad! I haven't seen him since I was a baby! I couldn't let them do that, and when I tried to talk to them they just kept saying I should be with my family. Well I don't have any family! Not anymore. You saw to that... And now I want you to pay."

"What do you want Mia? What will it take to get everyone out?"

"I want you to know what it's like to be alone. To have nobody in the world understand how horrible your life is. And to feel as if nobody cares about you."

"Mia people care about you, we want to see you safe and happy just like everyone else."

"Yeah right! I'm a killer now, there's no turning back. What's a few more bumped off before they take me down."

"Mia you have your whole life ahead of you, you're just a kid, how did this happen?"

"How? I met you! You killed my family! And now I want you to pay."

"Well then let the others go. Let them all out. They don't need to be here."

"Yes they do, they're all involved. Every one of them."

"Let them go and they'll deal with you, they'll go easy on you Mia, I promise."

"You promise? You're looking out for me now or something?"

"I don't want anybody to die."

John was finding it so hard to watch or listen to what was going on in the house. He'd seen people like Mia before, generally older people, but the same none the less. People ready to give up and with nothing to live for. They'll take anyone down with them, to hell with the consequences. How could Monica have allowed herself to be put in this position? It was unfair, and he'd never forgive himself if anything happened to her. John glanced occasionally at Dana, she was the only person who could begin to understand what he was feeling and going through. But he didn't want people to understand what he was feeling, he wanted to put a stop to this right now.
