"Hey," Detective Luke Callaghan says from leaning against a silver 2008 Honda Accord. He spots a vibrant red-head woman walking out of Kensington Health Hospice.
"Hey," the woman answers as she carries her bag. "I was wondering when I was going to hear from you."
"I deserved that," he declares as he watches her place her bag in the car. "Kay, I am trying here. I've been calling you for weeks."
"Why now, Luke," she demands, turning to face him. "You were ignoring me for five months before you resurfaced. I get it. The case was massive, but you don't think I get that."
"I know you do," he declares as he walks over to her. "It's never been that much pressure on me. I was getting it from everybody and when I needed you the most, I pushed you away. That was my mistake, but I'm not ready to give up four years."
"Luke," she starts.
"Notice it's the long weekend. I am not working this weekend. We could go up to the cabin and talk things over," he offers as he looks at her. "You and me for three days."
She stops and looks at him, before replying, "you mean it, no work?"
"No work," he asserts as he takes her hands in his. "I've missed you."
"I've missed you too," she declares as she looks into his eyes. "Let me check that nothing else is happening and I'll come."
"You mean it?" he questions, overcomes with excitement.
"Yes," she responds, shaking her head as he leans in and kisses her. She smiles and kisses him back, knowing that she was doing the right thing. Or at least hoped she was.
"I'll pick you up in, say two hours," he states, looking at his watch. "Say, 4:30."
"Sure," she says as he gives her one more kiss before walking over to his department-issued car. She swings her head as she walks over to the driver's side, pulls out her cell phone, and dials a number.
"Please tell me we are doing something this weekend," Gail says in an annoyed tone. "I will not last another month. This bullshit."
"Shouldn't have taken part-time classes and flunked so many," she says, teasing. "I got an interesting offer for this weekend."
"Tell me, tell me," Gail says in a giddy schoolgirl tone.
"A long weekend away at a cabin," she says as she places her car into drive.
"Luke?" Gail asked in a shocked tone. "Did he call you again?"
"No, he appeared after my shift at work. He offered me and him three days with no work or other interruptions."
"He could have gotten the Martinelli and Ryan cases off of his mind?"
"Doubt it. He has realized that he can't focus his entire life on these two cases. Do I go through it? I mean, he made a point of not wanting to throw four years aside."
"Well, he is right. Are you ready to move on? Ignore Steve and Sam. What does your heart say? Are you ready to try something new?"
"No. I love Luke, even if he becomes obsessed with his cases, but I can see why these hit him as hard as they did."
"It could have been me or you. Come on, Sam, Steve and our dads barely let us out of their sight after that case."
"But does it make sense for him to push me away?"
"That is what you are going to discuss. I know you are good together. You've been miserable without him."
"True, I guess I better let my dad know I'm going away for the weekend."
"If you need an excuse. Tell him we rented a place. They don't have to know you are going away with Luke, do they?"
"Evil genius," she laughs as she pulls in front of her building. "Are you sure you want to be a cop and have to play by the rules?"
"We both know my destiny."
"If you say so. I love you, Gail."
"I love you too Kit Kat," she says before ending the call.
She moves her head as she grabs her bag and gets out of her car. Then locks the vehicle as she walks into the building. She unlocks her mailbox before noticing a few of her neighbours and waves to them. Then opens the compartment and scans her mail as she walks toward her apartment. She unlocks the door before walking through the door. Then strides towards her kitchen and drops her mail and keys on her kitchen island.
"You better answer me, you better answer me," her phone rings as she shakes her head and answers it. "Hey, daddy."
"Kitty, how was work?" Donovan asks as papers shuffle.
"Well, had to handle a few new intakes, but nothing too strenuous," she says as she opens her fridge. "What's new to you?"
"I have to head out to Ottawa this weekend," he says. "It looks like La Familia is spreading and picking up speed. I wanted to make sure that you are okay."
"Dad, come on I'm 24. I am sure I can handle a weekend by myself."
"I'm worried. There has been movement and chatter. Long weekends are never a good thing in this city."
"Gail and I thought we would head up to the cabin country."
"That sounds fun. Do try to be careful on the roads. I don't enjoy holiday traffic."
"I know. You should head to the train station before you get caught up with the commuters."
"True, I'll talk to you later. I love you to the moon and back."
"And I love you to the sun and back," she says as she hangs up her phone. She places it on the counter before walking into her bedroom.
She rummages to look through for clothes for this weekend. Her lingerie collection had been updated since the last time she and Luke were together. She was considering a couple of different black baby dolls.
She inspects her swimsuit collection. She had suits for competitive swimming and ones that were for lounging at the beach or by the pool. Then pulls out a deep green front tie halter bikini top with a string bikini bottom.
She strides across her bedroom into her closet and looked through her choices. She scans through the number of dresses she had collected throughout the years. Her closet had dress options for different occasions: work, dates, family events or fun nights out. Then spots the red satin mini-dress and remembers her first interaction with Luke.
"Are you sure?" a nineteen-year-old Kathleen asked. She and Gail were standing outside of the club called Alcatraz.
"You want to prove to them they should stop interfering in our lives, don't you?" Gail asked as she peered at her. "Plus, you are single and look too sexy."
"True," Kathleen said as she studied her red satin dress that was reaching mid-thigh and was backless. She had paired it with a pair of black ankle-strapped heels and a black satin clutch. She was wearing a pair of large gold hoops and a multilayered gold butterfly necklace. Her hair was in a messy bun, and with dark smokey eyes and vibrant red lips. "We did not waste an hour getting ready to back out at the door."
"Yes," Gail said with excitement as she gets in line. She had worn a mini black vinyl dress with silver heels and a silver clutch. She handed their IDs to the bouncer after he waved them to the front of the line. They smiled at the bouncer as he pulled the cloth back for them. "Now tonight's mission. Drink, dance, and keep our eyes open."
"Step one is to get to the bar," Kathleen said as she placed her ID in the clutch and made her way toward the busy bar. "While attempting step two."
"Spotting any known suspects," Gail said as they reached the bar. "Can we get two deathbed shots and two Sally Fudpuckers?"
"Coming right up," a young man in an orange jumpsuit said. "14.75?"
Gail smiled at him before handing him a twenty, before replying, "keep the change. Where could a girl go if she wanted attention?"
"Thanks, hot stuff," he said as he placed the shots and drinks on the bar. "It depends on what attention you are looking to get."
The ladies looked at each other before doing their shots. Gail looked at him and said, "my cousin has spent the last six years of boarding school and is looking for fun. Can you imagine six years locked in an all-girls boarding school?"
"We have a couple of guys who give out party favours in the back right corner," he said before he looked over at a table. They noticed Sam sitting there with an unknown blonde. "If you want male attention, try the left-center part of the dance floor."
"Thanks, danger," Gail said before picking up her drink and walking toward the dance floor. "That was easy."
Kathleen looked at her before she said, "all-girls boarding school?"
"Figured it might loosen his lips," she said as scanned the stations. "It gave us Sam."
"True, he is playing off his usual dealer presence," she declared as she scanned the club. This position gave them the perfect vantage point to see the entire club. "Steve might stand out, and Oliver."
"They are in the van or providing backup," Gail said as she zeroed in on the exits. "We have at least three ways in and out."
"Jerry is around here somewhere," she added as she found him. "Watching the backdoor and fire exit near the bathrooms."
"Someone is acting as security near the DJ booth," she announced as she skimmed the club. "Likely Frank or someone new."
"Noelle is in here as a patron with another officer," she suggested as she scoured the bar. "That means between five and seven on the in here. This isn't a normal case."
"You're good. This is a much larger case," Gail spoke as she scanned the entrance. "We better get out of here."
"Why?" she said as she turned and located a group of young adult males entering the establishment. "Not Looney Toons. We are dead."
"Why couldn't it be Parkdale Boys, Village Crew or La Cruz?"
"We could never be that lucky. That means my dad's case."
"Double crap, at least it's not Tiny Toons. That is worse, much worse."
"Let's focus on getting out of here unnoticed," Kathleen said as she finished her drink. "Most of their attention should be on the buy."
"And on the exits," Gail reminded her. "They don't want any squirters."
"If we make our way towards the front door, we should be good."
"Or we could wait till after the bust and want to scurry out with the crowds."
"Then, for sure, we will get caught. You were just talking about what happens to the squirters."
"Crap, what do we do?"
"We move closer to the exit and when a group gets ready to leave, we'll blend into the crowd."
"That may work. It would appear that we came in with the group."
"What we have to do is pick a target towards the exit," Kathleen said before they scanned the club. "Two single guys without friends at your 7."
Gail turned and noticed them. "They will do," she said as she began her sexy walk toward them. Kathleen followed her lead. She bumped into a woman on their way.
"Oh no," a voice they recognized said. "What the hell are you two doing here?"
"Crap," they muttered. They turned and saw Noelle Williams standing there with another gentleman.
"Now is not the time, Williams," the other guy said. "Make a mental note of giving them their underage ticket later."
"Boss, we have a slight issue," she talked into her sleeve.
"Uh, Williams," the guy said again.
"Come on Noelle, we were leaving," Kathleen pleaded
"Not now Callaghan," Noelle said. "Mini Boyd and Peck are here."
"Wait, what?" the guy Callaghan asked as the girls cursed under their breath.
"Yes, sir," she said after touching her ear. "Detective, could you escort these two ladies out to Boyko and Boyd?"
"You got eyes on Rosati and Swarek," he asked as he moved between the two girls.
"Yup, will page you if we need backup," she said as she glared at the two. "Not your smartest move, Kat."
"I know," she says as the Detective grabbed their elbows and moved them towards the exit. "Your worst idea yet."
"Note to self, look closer into files when picking a location," Gail said as he escorted them out of the club.
"You have thirty seconds to unhand us," Kathleen said once they were in the alley behind the club.
"Give me one reason I shouldn't arrest you," he said as he held his grip and moved them toward the end of the alley. "I could on obstruction and threatening a cop."
"It's not a threat," she answered as she stepped on his foot and elbowed him in the gut. She placed herself in a fighting stance with her arms, ready to throw a punch.
"Kathleen Faith Boyd!"
"Double shit," Gail said. She turned and looked toward the voices. She saw Jason and Donovan storming towards them. Steve and Oliver were not far behind them.
"Officer Shaw, please escort these ladies back to the division," Boyko commanded. "Please, have them wait for me in my office."
"Right away," Oliver said before he moved to them. "If you will follow me." The two girls glanced at each other. They followed Oliver toward his squad car.
"Detective Callaghan. If I ever catch you manhandling my daughter or niece again," Donovan said after getting in his face. "I will not only make sure my daughter is not responsible for her actions, but I will see you in front of a review board."
