Bio:

Nathaniel Grant is a reincarnated human who initially lived in the Gate Universe, born in 1931 to James and Amelia Gerhart in a Hooverville in Sacramento, California. Before being reincarnated, Nathaniel's original name was Marcus Gerhart, and in 1949, he attended the University of California. By 1950 he began dating Ophelia Marceau, a French immigrant working at The Black Sheep. In December of 1953, he and his fiancé moved to San Francisco, where he began working at The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company with his former college dormmate and best-friend Walter Morgan. During his coworker's bachelor party in June of 1954, Walter convinces him they should join the Army and agrees. The following day Marcus goes to the recruitment center alone. While waiting on his friend, he begins discussing with the recruiter the path to becoming an officer. Upon signing the papers, Gerhart decided to personally inform his coworkers that he would be leaving the company on Friday so he could spend some time with his fiancé before being shipped off to basic training. While his boss understood and was proud of his choice to serve his country. Telling him how the accounting department will not be the same with their departure. Seeing the look of confusion on Gerhart's face, Barnes decides to explain to him how he was going to recommend that Farwell should promote him to the head of accounting, but due to his departure, it would probably go to Morgan. Heading to the breakroom, he found his friend bragging to the others about how he had convinced the great Marcus Gerhart to join the Army. Continuing to work the rest of the day, albeit depressed, Gerhart would make it back to his apartment, inform Ophelia of his choice to join the Army and that he would be leaving soon to attend basic training. Two days before shipping out, Judge Ronald Petitt would officiate their wedding. Twenty-two weeks after graduating from officer candidate school, Gerhart would learn his wife would be expecting.

Gerhart would quickly rise through the ranks and be promoted to the rank of Major before shipping out to Vietnam. The last words he told his son James and his twin Elizabeth was that he would be back when the US won the war. Unfortunately, that day would never come. On January 31, 1968, Marcus Gerhart would be fatally wounded by Corporal Robert Dirrel, who, in the haze of battle, mistook him as NVA Sapper. Upon being inspected by Dirrel, his last words were, "You fucking, dumbass, you shot me of all the things you have done, Corporal Dirrel. This has got to be by far the worse I-I-I am g-g-going t-to have you c-c-court-!"

After dying, Gerhart would spend some time in purgatory before being reborn as James Newell, the bastard son of Howard Lockreed III and his secretary Rachel Newell in 2036. To keep his existence a secret, his father shipped him off to live with the groundkeepers caring for the Lockreed Family Mansion in Rochester, New York. On his 18th birthday, his biological father came to the mansion and told him about his true heritage, promising to pay for his education. In the fall of 2055, Newell began attending classes at Cornell University and helplessly watched as the world fell apart, starting with the Euro-Middle Eastern War. With the US breaking diplomatic relations with most socialist countries by 2059. Remembering the threat of Soviet expansionism in his previous life, Newell changes his name to Grant and decides to join the New York Army National Guard. Grant met Nora in July of 2061 when she came down from Boston to visit her half-brother, serving in the 2nd platoon of D company. After hitting it off, they begin dating in the fall of 2061. While serving, Nate helps pay for Nora's tuition so she can obtain a higher education. (Nora is 19)

He was awarded the Medal of Honor in the winter of 2066 after exposing himself to enemy fire to man a machine gun on an immobilized tank so the rest of D Company could retreat to Fort Wainwright. With the aid of Sergeant Edwin Cooke, Lieutenant Grant managed to hold back the red Chinese advance at the crossroad of Parks Hwy and Parks Ridge Rd for over 7 hours while waiting for reinforcements to arrive. In addition to being awarded the Medal of Honor, he and Cooke were promoted.

He was awarded the Silver Star for his part in rescuing 7 POWs when his company came under fire in the town of Galena. In the fall of 2067, this town became the staging area for Chinese forces attacking Fairbanks. With orders to destroy the base, Grant waited for the recon team to return and confirm his suspicions about the POWs being held. Quickly changing their plans, he would use a single platoon to liberate the prisoners while the other two would engage the Charlie's while destroying as much of their hardware as possible. While Captain Grant and the 2nd platoon rescued the Governor of Alaska. The 1st platoon was dropping charges down tank hatches while the 3rd platoon was on the lookout. When the 1st platoon lost its commander, Staff Sergeant Cooke took command, continuing to return fire as Corporal Jackson planted the explosives. Upon completing the mission, Cooke was promoted to second lieutenant and placed in charge of the 1st platoon. Grant begins to see similarities between himself and Cooke. Grant is awarded to three more Silver Stars between 2067 and January 2077

He was awarded Army Distinguished Service Cross in 2070 when he stormed a Chinese compound with Lieutenant Cooke's platoon to capture a high-ranking colonel. After securing the asset, his translator told him that a high-ranking general was located three floors below them. Looking at his men, he ordered them to guard the entrance while he and Cooke split up to sweep the building and put down any hostiles. As he made it to the third level and passed the officer's mess, he was rushed by a Chinese major who managed to kick the laser rifle out of his hand. Resorting to hand-to-hand combat, each soldier tried to find the perfect moment to strike. After fending off numerous strikes, the Charlie bastard managed to gain the upper hand after blocking Grant's thrust. In a split second, the Chinese major dropped the knife from his left hand into his right, performing a slashing motion that wounded the left side of Nathaniel's face. Preparing himself for another attack, Grant held his knife up, but as the major began to charge, Cooke appeared behind him and shot him in the back. Clearing the rest of the facility, Cooke and Grant made it to the general's quarters. They quickly eliminated the guards. However, when they breached the room, Cooke got wounded when the general fired his pistol at the opening between armor plating on his left arm. Grant instantly returned fire, placing a bullet in the general's arm and leg. Taking the man's pistol as a trophy, they both began to make their way back towards the entrance with the prisoner rendezvousing with the rest of the squad. Finally, making their way to the extraction point.

He was awarded the Soldier's Medal in June of 2076 while on emergency leave to attend his mother's funeral. After the funeral, he went to Super Duper Mart to buy some whisky to drown his sorrows, but as he walked toward the entrance. He witnessed a man fumbling with a detonator and quickly ran towards him, tackling the hostile he restrained the man until the authorities arrived. After subduing the terrorist, the police discovered that he was part of the United Workers' Freedom Front. Under interrogation, the man explained that their mission was to destroy the Super Duper Mega Mart in New York City so they could strike at the very heart of American Capitalism. The army responded to Grant's heroism by extending his leave by a week so the newspapers could interview him. The article written by the Manhattan Tribune touted his military career, pointing out the medals he had earned. The Tribune listed that he had been awarded the Medal of Honor, an Army Distinguished Service Cross, 4 Silver Stars, 2 Bronze Stars, and 6 Purple Hearts for actions he took throughout the Alaskan campaign.

While in between interviews, Grant would meet up with Nora multiple times throughout the week of June 14th, with one of their encounters taking them to Grand Central Park, where they made love one last time before he was redeployed to the frontlines, resulting in Shaun's conception. Upon liberating Anchorage, the army decided to discharge Nate early for having gone above and beyond the call of duty numerous times. Returning home, Nate discovers that Nora is pregnant with his child. As delighted as he was at the news, he soon began to panic as he struggled to find a job that would suit him and wasn't demeaning since many jobs wanted him to start at the bottom. As Grant struggled to find a job, he became a guest speaker, telling others about his time in the army and informing the students of CIT that their research into nuclear fusion and robotics was being put to good use. However, in August of 2077, his life would forever change when his former army buddy Edwin Cooke offered him a position on his senatorial staff, stating that he needed a chief of staff that understood him.

After celebrating a legislative victory on October 22nd, Nate and Edwin take a jet back to Boston to mark the passage of their bill at the Shamrock Taphouse. Following a long night of drinks, they accidentally switch coats. Unfortunately, on October 23rd, Nate's perfect life would fall apart.
