Teach Me, KID-sensei

Teacher's Pet

Being Kaitou KID was actually not very cheap. Sure, the Kurobas had money, but over the past couple years of being KID, Kaito had spent a lot of money on props, gadgets, fixing his costume, making fake versions of the gems he stole, also traveling in the cases where his desired treasure was in another country. On top of that, his mom had always loved traveling too. So after graduating from high school and getting into college, Kaito decided to get a job to make the extra cash he needed for his night-time activities. The problem was, what to do.

It had been Aoko who gave him the right idea. Teach magic. Magicians were so incredibly popular, thanks to KID, and many wanted to learn the craft. Considering just how many people had admired him in high school and now admired him in college for his skills, people might pay actual money to learn from him. So Kaito set out fliers and waited. It actually worked, he taught classes three times a week and they were always pretty full. He taught at the Blue Parrot, thanks to Jii.

"I set up a meeting with your new students for you later today, Young Master," informed Jii.

Kaito, in the middle of a game of pool with Aoko, paused. "What? I don't have a class today."

Jii had kind of become his secretary, since he taught the classes at Jii's bar, the older gentleman was in charge of deciding when it fit his schedule, when the bar could be used for these classes. Though usually, Jii-chan would at least talk to Kaito first before making appointments. And he knew that Kaito only taught three classes a week – he was so busy, being a college student and KID.

"The young lady paid double to have private lessons for her and her friends."

Okay, extra cash did seem good. And rich people wanting to learn magic were a good clientele. They were easily excitable and tended to tip well when they actually did learn a trick. Granted, some were also incredibly entitled and rude bastards, but the money was still good.

"Guess we'll have to finish this game soon then," noted Aoko. "Oh well, that does suit me. I can pick Saguru up from class, maybe we could get dinner together."

She flushed a little bit, ducking her head. Her and Saguru had gotten together a few months before graduation and though Kaito made all the fun of them that he could – teasing tantei-san was one of his biggest hobbies – he generally sat in the glass-case and shouldn't throw stones, because he too was in love with a Holmes geek teenage detective. Emphasis on teenage, because a couple of months, tantei-kun had finally returned to his very appealing grown-up body. Heists have been so much more fun since then. Sure, chibi-sized tantei-kun had already been fun, however the grown-up version didn't have to also fight his way out of his nee-chan's clutches. He could move freely, he was being listened to and (mostly) respected by the police (Nakamori-keibu was not a fan of having two meddling teen detectives butting into his chase).

"Hello! We're here for the magic classes? Suzuki Sonoko."

No way. Kaito's eyes widened. Actually, every way, because Sonoko has had a crush on him – on KID – for years now. She had been interested in magic since then, so her taking proper classes to learn made perfect sense. But that she would end up here? Kaito turned to stare at Jii, who seemed nearly smug, which was unusual for him. Furrowing his brows, Kaito turned around. He lost control of his entire face, because Sonoko was not alone. She was accompanied by two brunettes. Mouri Ran on her right... and Kudou Shinichi on her left, looking absolutely annoyed.

"I really don't know why you're forcing me along to this," Shinichi heaved a sigh.

"You disappeared for two years for some stupid case. You will spend one afternoon a week learning magic with Sonoko and me," stated Ran rather firmly, glaring at him.

Shinichi was here, right now, to learn magic from him. His tantei-kun was here to learn magic from Kaitou KID. The levels of irony in that one, oh, Kaito wished he could rub that under Shinichi's nose. For now, he needed to regain his bearings. Maybe formulate some words with his mouth.

"Well then, I guess our time got cut short," Aoko shrugged. "Have fun, Kaito!"

Kaito barely could nod and wave at her, because his entire brainpower currently went into staring at Kudou Shinichi, trying to memorize every single thing. His stance, the casual clothes, the look on his face. This was a different Shinichi than his tantei-kun; his tantei-kun was in full detective mode, his wit was at its sharpest, his lips pulled into a cocky, self-assured smirk, his eyes seemingly seeing right through everything. But this? This was the casual Shinichi hanging out with his best friends. A whole different vibe to it, much like how Kaito knew he was very different from his KID persona.

"Excuse me, are you Kuroba-kun?" asked Sonoko with a smile, rubbing her hands together.

Poker-face, Kaito. Closing his eyes for a moment, he put a charming, polite smile on and, with all the will-power he could manage, tore himself away from Shinichi to instead take Sonoko's hand and kiss it. After, he produced a rose that he handed to her.

"Yes, I am, Suzuki-san, it's a pleasure to meet you," offered Kaito.

"Wonderful," she flushed, holding the rose. "Those are my friends, Mouri Ran and Kudou Shinichi, please ignore his protests, he loves magic, he is just too tsundere to admit it."

"I do not love magic, Sonoko," Shinichi groaned and tilted his head back.

"Ever since you came back, you made sure to attend every single KID heist. You have that sparkly look in your eyes when KID-sama performs his shows. I have seen you physically shove police men out of the way to get a front-row view on his performance," Sonoko huffed unimpressed.

Wha—at? His tantei-kun liked his magic? Sure, Kaito was absolutely aware that Shinichi enjoyed the heists. But he had always assumed it was all about the mystery, the thinking and figuring out how things worked. Don't let it get to your head, Kaito, concentrate. With a smile did Kaito proceed to kiss Ran's hand and also give her a peach-colored rose. She offered him a shy, small smile in return, accepting the rose. The look on tantei-kun's face though, when Kaito just moved on to then take his hand and kiss it and hand him a lavender-colored rose – oh, it was delightful. All wide eyes and red cheeks, mouth hanging a little open as though he had not expected this.

"It is a pleasure to meet you all and I am looking forward to working with you."

Ran was a little clumsy, though she didn't seem to mind, she found joy in even just trying. Sonoko got extremely excited about everything she even half-way managed. But the most interesting student was Shinichi. He was a fast learner, which figured. Though actually seeing that analytic mind being put to dissecting the tricks with the purpose of reproducing them? Amazing. Kaito was absolutely in love with Shinichi performing magic. Which was a problem, because he was already in love with Shinichi being a detective. If possible, he was now even more in love.

"Thank you for the lesson," Ran bowed a little. "We're looking forward to next week. Shinichi!"

While the girls stood at the door, ready to leave, Shinichi made no such attempts, he was still fidgeting with the last trick Kaito had shown them. "You can go ahead, Ran. I had some more questions for Kuroba-kun about the other trick. It'd just bore you."

Rolling her eyes, Ran turned around. "Fine. You always do have to get to the bottom of things."

Together, Ran and Sonoko walked out, waving at Kaito. With a racing heart did Kaito turn toward his tantei-kun, with whom he was now all alone. For the very first time, Kaito was all alone with Kudou Shinichi, while not donning his white get-up. Kaito was nervous. He wanted to leave a good impression, wanted to charm Shinichi, make him fall in love with Kaito. Because he knew that KID and tantei-kun were doomed, he could never be in a relationship with Shinichi without Shinichi knowing the truth. But if he had a chance to make Shinichi fall in love with his civil identity? Then, he could actually tell the detective the truth and maybe, just maybe, Shinichi would accept him.

Who was he kidding? It was a long shot to even make Shinichi fall in love with him. All of this was a fantasy in his head, one he had replayed so often in his head. But maybe they could be friends.

"You're a surprisingly good teacher, KID-san. Didn't expect the... patience."

"K... K..." Kaito turned around slowly, his eyes wide in fear.

He half expected a tranquilizer gun or a soccer ball to be aimed his way. Instead, Shinichi was still fidgeting with the trick, his focus on that. He wasn't even looking up at Kaito yet. But there it was, that little 'I figured it out' smirk, the one he had fallen in love with so hard.

"Or would you prefer KID-sensei?" Shinichi looked up, amusement in his eyes.

Heaving a dramatic sigh, Kaito came to sprawl himself out on the table right in front of Shinichi. He was also trying not to think about how much he liked the sound of 'KID-sensei' coming from his tantei-kun. Finally, Shinichi put the trick aside. Instead, he picked up the lavender rose.

"The roses you gave to Ran and Sonoko, they were peach-colored. Usually handed over for business deals, symbols of gratitude. You expressed your thanks for them choosing you as their teacher," Shinichi started to speak, twirling the rose in his hand. "Lavender roses however... They symbolize love at first sight. Adoration. Fascination. You chose this, for a reason. And not because you just fell in love with me the second I walked through the door."

Kaito cupped his cheek with a hand, propping his head up on his elbow and looking at Shinichi like the most love-sick puppy possible. He couldn't suppress it, really. Shinichi making deductions did things to Kaito. There seemed to be roses and sparkles all around Shinichi as he spoke.

"That's, at best, suspicious. But certainly not enough to assume me to be KID."

"Your hands," whispered Shinichi, his eyes wandering to look at them. "The way you perform your magic, the way you... hold things, handle things. How quickly your fingers work your magic. It's... very distinct... and I've seen it often enough, often enough up-close."

Kaito blushed furiously at that. His hands? That was how much attention Shinichi paid to him during his heists? Enough that he could recognize his hands? All Kaito could do was gape. Shinichi slowly put the rose down onto the table and leaned in closer. Very close.

"I want to... kiss you," whispered Shinichi, pressing his lips together for a moment. "I've wanted to for a very, very long time. You... At some points, you were the only thing keeping me sane. I... The rose, I assume, indicates that you might feel the same way. So... I want to... kiss you, KID. Kaito."

Kaito. The way his name rolled off Shinichi's tongue like that, no honorific, no last name, it felt so intimate, as though they had years of close history with each other. Which they did, even if not as Kaito and Shinichi. Swallowing, Kaito leaned in to meet Shinichi halfway for a gentle kiss.

Author's note: I've fallen into the deep end of DCMK again and since there are so many ideas in my head right now, I've decided that for the time being, I'll establish Magic Mondays, to post short(ish) (...this one is already twice as long as I had INTENDED TO) DCMK fics! Mostly KaiShin but also others because there's a lot I want to play with ;)
