Chapter 5

It has been six weeks and four days since the incident at the church. Newspapers reported that most human traffickers have been caught and were serving time in jail before they go on a trial in the future. The victims were rescued and secured in shelter homes until the day when they would testify against the human traffickers. It was thanks to the anonymous tips from vigilantes. The human traffickers who weren't caught by the police suffered their fates at the hands of the Lord of Crime, a mysterious group of people who were assassins by hire.

Since then, things have been uneventful at the Duke's estate, besides the regular visits from Viola, Akira, and Kotone. Today was a special day for the Duke's household.

9: 30 AM, The Duke's bedroom, Duke's Estate

"Good morning, master." Suzume smiled sweetly at the Duke, her face close to his.

"Suzume, don't tell me that Alice has been teaching you about NOT respecting someone's boundaries." Duke kept his distance from Suzume while he sat on his bed, barely waking up. "You do know about my curse."

"Forgive me," Suzume flushed, turning her eyes away from the Duke. "Miss Alice and Mr. Rob made breakfast. I wanted to help, but they told me I should relax today."

"Of course, The Duke smiled at Suzume. "Happy birthday, Suzume."

Suzume blinked at the Duke as she gaped at him in surprise. She kneeled and placed her hands on her lap as she lifted her head and gazed into his eyes. The Duke has always known that Suzume has a similar eye color to his. His eyes were crimson, and her eyes were pinkish red, or were her eyes maroon or burgundy, just like her hair color? The Duke couldn't even tell. Suzume has explained to him that she was born with hair and eye colors. The Duke also noticed that Suzume had her long wavy hair down today. Her curls balanced as she quickly sat up and flushed. She bowed her head.

"I'm sorry, master! I did not mean to make things awkward!"

"No, no! I'm the one who should apologize!" Duke widened his eyes, waving his hands. "I'm the one who was staring! I was just thinking that you looked stunning with your hair down!"

"HUH?!" Suzume exclaimed at him, her face turning completely red. "I...I'm not stunning like...Miss Alice...Thank you for your birthday wishes! I need to leave now!" Suzume turned around and dashed out of the Duke's bedroom.

"Suzume, wait!" The Duke had his hand out and blinked his eyes. He's flustered now. 'My heart is pounding through.' He placed his hand on his heart. 'Could it be that I am also attracted to Suzume?' The Duke cupped his cheeks. 'I am in a love triangle between me, Suzume, and Alice?!'

"Your Grace, are you all right?"

"EH?!" The Duke turned his attention to Alice, who had a concerned expression, carrying a breakfast tray. Yes, I am." Duke did not even want to tell Alice that he complimented Suzume's looks earlier. He felt wrong for doing so behind Alice's back. "So, does Suzume know about the surprised party yet?"

"Not yet, Your Grace."

"Good. It was supposed to be a surprise, after all."

10: 30 AM, Zain's and Caph's home

"Today, I feel so great!" Zain jumped off his bed in excitement. "Today is Suzume's birthday! What should we get her as a gift, Caph?! Oh, how about a gift from the witch world?!"

"Give Suzume something weird, and I'm frying your ass," Caph warned him, annoyed with his suggestion. She's handwriting a birthday message on a piece of paper or attempted to since she wasn't good at writing yet. "So, who's else coming to the birthday party tonight?"

"Let's see," Zain took a folded paper out of his pocket and unfolded it. He scanned through the list. "Who the heck is Arthur Kirkland again?"

"The detective kid who founded Suzume, remember?"

"Oh, right. Ditunka, Malika, Zuzka, Miloslav, Elle Chivas, Pfeifer," Zain read the unfamiliar names from the list. "Who the heck are these people?"

"Who knows? Done!" Caph showed her birthday message to Zain. "What do you think, Zain?!"

"Whoa! It looks nice, Caph!" Zain muffled her head proudly. "Suzume will love this!"

"Thank you, Zain!" Caph's eyes glimmered in happiness. "All right! Let's go shopping for Suzume's gift!"

There was a knock on the door, and Zain went to answer the door. Kiyomaro and Gash were standing outside, greeting him with a hand wave.

"Hey!" Gash smiled. "Do you want to go shopping for Suzume's birthday gift?!"

"Well be! What a coincidence!" Zain grinned. "Caph and I were about to head out to do the same!"

"Good," Kiyomaro nodded, giving Zain and Caph a cheerful smile. "Then, we can have lunch. My treat."

"Free lunch!" Caph jumped merrily, taking Gash's hand. "Let's go, Gash!"

"Right!"

Caph dashed out, dragging Gash along with her. Kiyomaro and Zain just gaped. Then, they looked at each other.

"So, where are the other fellas? You know, the silver-haired ones." Zain asked.

"Oh, Duforx and Zeon. They left the town a day ago, saying they got things to do." Kiyomaro answered as he and Zain headed out.

11: 00 AM, Viola's bedroom, the main estate

"Lady Radthorne," Akira awkwardly sat on a chair. "It is really okay for me to be in your bedroom?"

"Of course it is!" Viola adjusted her glasses. She sat across from Akira, giving him a confident smile. "I did invite you to discuss plans for Miss Mizukawa, the younger's birthday!" A sneaky glint appeared within her eyes. "And we shall not tell my stupid secondborn brother. He''ll snitch us to my mother if he finds out. We shall not allow him to ruin the birthday party!"

"But, would the birthday party serve as a good opportunity for Lord Radthorne to meet my sisters in person?" Akira suggested.

"Well, yes. But, honestly, Walter only cares about surpassing my cursed firstborn brother."

"That's rough..." Akira responded in pity.

"Anyway," Viola ignored Akira's pitiful tone and showed a drawing of a dress to Akira. "I designed this dress for the birthday girl!"

"Wow, Lady Radthorne!" Akira's eyes glimmered in favor. "The dress is beautiful!"

"Thanks! My dream is to be a fashion designer one day!" Viola revealed her true goal to Akira.

"Lady Viola," There was a knock on the door as a maid spoke behind the door. "It's time for your violin lessons."

"Ah, bummer!" Viola slumped in her chair in disappointment. "Just when I was having fun!"

"There, there," Akira stood and leaned over to pat Viola's shoulder in comfort. "You'll have fun later on."

11: 30 AM, an unnamed all-boys school in London

Walter hated his punishment. He has to sit in class all morning, listening to boring lectures and working on classwork. His mother thought it was a good idea to send Walter to an all-boys school to straighten out his disobedience toward his family reputation. Viola sneaked out more than him, and yet he was the one who got the punishment. Oh right. Viola has the habit of making him the scapegoat. It wasn't fair, damn it. Again, Walter shouldn't even be complaining. Instead, he should be using this opportunity to learn the skills so surpassing his firstborn brother would be efficient, but Walter's mind has been occupied lately.

Walter couldn't stop thinking about that girl from six weeks ago. He was captivated by her hair and eye color, or maybe it was her serene aura. How could she be so damn calm while she stood in a church full of dead bodies and broken windows? According to one of the witnesses, before he and his group arrived at the church, Suzume defeated her kidnapper with brute strength. Walter knew it was physically impossible for a girl to overpower a grown man.

"Ugh. I want to see Miss Suzume." A boy with messy auburn hair whined as he slumped in his seat. "Why the bloody hell I'm here as my punishment?"

"Huh?" Walter turned his eyes at the boy, and he recognized him. "Wait, I saw you from the church on that night."

"What the fudge? I also saw you there." The boy grinned. "The name's Miloslav Kovacova. Yours?"

"Walter Radthorne."

"Awesome, dude. So, it must have been fate, huh? So, what do you think of Miss Suzume? You were there, dude. Do you think she was cute?"

"I..." Walter was flustered with his question. "...I'm not sure yet. I'm the type of guy who gets nervous around girls."

"Lies. I saw you gazing at her that night," Miloslav snapped his fingers, smirking at Walter. "You know you also want to woo the cute Japanese girl."

"I don't even know her personally!" Walter burst out, embarrassed with Miloslav's claims, as pinkness bloomed in his cheeks.

"Gentlemen," Their math teacher, who was, in fact, William James Moriarty, called out to Walter and Miloslav. "Is there something you would like to share with the class?" He questioned, smiling calmly at the boys.

"Sir," Clive has spoken out in Miloslav's and Walter's defense. "I'm sure what they're speaking about is irrelevant to your math lessons. Gentlemen are just being gentlemen with their desires to woo the ladies." He added as the whole class started to laugh.

'Damn you, Clive.' Walter narrowed his eyes at Clive, irritated by his words. 'The hell's your problem today?'

1: 48 PM, Gressenheller University, London

Professor Hershel Layton was in his office, speaking to his guest, Desmond Sycamore. The men sat across from each other on sofas and slipped tea. They were having a conversation about mysterious findings. Layton's eyes widened in interest at what Desmond mentioned to him.

"Rare hair accessories and jewelry?"

"Yes. That is what Crime Boss is searching for. Well, more like his men and woman are doing the search for him."

"What is Crime Boss planning? I do wonder." Layton folded his arms and looked down at the floor. "Again," Layton rubbed his chin with his fingers. "I feel it isn't my place to question his objectives."

"Crime Boss is a dangerous man, Mr. Layton." Desmond narrowed his eyes at Layton sternly. "Dangerous as the Lord of Crime. I have a bad feeling that something will happen if Crime Boss would to get his hands on the hair accessories and jewelry. Well, if the legend is true, that is..."

"What is this legend you are speaking of?" Layton inquired, raising his head.

"Well," Desmond began to explain to Layton.

2: 28 PM, Whitechapel slums

Gina Lestrade discovered Shaun on a rooftop. She sighed, feeling annoyed. As the leader of her urchins' group, Gina took Shaun and his friends under her wing, so she was responsible for them. She climbed onto the rooftop and sat next to him.

"I thought yer can't be seen in public," Gina said to Shaun. "What are you really hiding from?"

"It's complicated," Shaun answered, still gazing at the sky.

Once upon a time, Shaun, Emilico, Rum, Ricky, and Lou and their shadow masters, John, Kate, Shiney, Patrick, and Louise, excaped from an estate called the Shadows house with the help of their friends named Rosemary and Anthony and the fellow Shadow, Maryrose. Because the Shadows' masters would be too unusual to be seen in public, the Shadows usually in their morph forms.

"Well, it isn't like the adults would come to this dump," Gina said disgustingly. "So, I'm sure you and your friends are safe outside."

"Miss Gina," Shaun turned his eyes at Gina grimly. "The adults that we know shouldn't be underestimated."

"So, yer and yer friends got different circumstances."

Shaun nodded. Gina stood and stretched her arms out. A young woman walked by, carrying a basket of clothes while her five-year-old son was holding her twelve-year-old daughter's hand. The children followed their mother to the river, where the mother washed the clothes. A few men in rugged clothes returned from work and sat around a campfire, drinking cheap booze while chatting while other poverty-stricken socialized and kept themselves busy with chores. This was the life that Shaun and Gina were used to daily.

"Well," Shaun stood and smiled at Gina. "We should head to work if we want to eat tonight."

"Yer damned right," Gina grinned brightly.

By working, Shaun meant pickpocketing and stealing. Well, that's what Gina and her urchins do. Shaun and Ricky worked as shoe shiners and dishwashers, while Emilico, Lou, and Rum worked as flower sellers. It was a tough life for the children, but a least it was better than Shadows House's forceful rules.

Shaun and Gina jumped down from the rooftop and joined the other urchins as they walked toward their work together. Emilico, Lou, and Rum went ahead earlier. Shaun wondered what the Shadows masters were doing around this time.

'I hope Master John isn't causing Mistress Kate and the others trouble.' Shaun thought in worry.

3: 18 PM, Philip's Estate, London

Tonight would be a busy night for the Rivers family, so Philip and Gloria couldn't attend Suzume's birthday party at the Duke's estate. The siblings did buy Suzume a gift. Kotone has gotten permission from Philip's parents to attend her younger sister's party. After all, servants had no business in an aristocratic party unless they were just there to serve drinks.

Philip found Kotone alone in her bedroom. Kotone's companions had left his family's estate since then. They don't need to follow her around as if they were her maids. A commoner with maids? That was unheard of in the aristocratic society. Philip never once questioned Kotone's personal life. Kotone has made it clear to him that she's his tutor and he's her pupil in the Japanese language and culture lessons. She has no intention of befriending him and his sister.

Kotone kneeled on her sitting cushion, reading a book. She wore a blue-green kimono, and her hair was tied up in a bun with a light blue flower hair clip. She had a soured expression as she turned her eyes at him glacially.

"Do you need something, Lord Rivers? I believe my Japanese lessons ended a few hours ago." She told him frigidly, returning her attention to her book.

"I apologize for disturbing you," Philip placed two gift boxes on the coffee table. "Gloria and I can't attend your sister's birthday party tonight."

"I see." Kotone glanced at the gifts. "Thank you for the gifts. I'm sure my sister would appreciate yours and your sister's kindness."

Philip noticed Kotone gripped her book tightly, and her lips quivered. Her eyes mixed with sadness and anger.

"Is something the matter?"

"Do not concern yourself with my troubles, Lord Rivers."

Philip felt sympathy towards the young Japanese woman. He wanted to know about her past, but he didn't have the heart to ask her. Philip checked his watch for the time and looked out the window. The weather today was sunny.

"Should you be getting ready for your sister's birthday party?" Philip asked, looking back at her.

"I will once you leave my bedroom."

"Of course, I'm sorry." Philip quickly exited Kotone's bedroom and closed the door behind him. A maid came by to check on Kotone. "Miss, please have a carriage and a coachman ready for Miss Mizukawa's departure in an hour." He requested.

"Of course, sir." The maid bowed her head.

"Take care," Philip smiled at her kindly and walked away, heading towards his bedroom.

3: 38 PM, Two-hour away from London town

"Master! Look!" Suzume pointed to a booth happily. "The man is selling pretty things!" She hurried to the booth, leaving behind a smiling Alice and a Duke in his town's "death-proof" disguise. "Master, Miss Alice! What are you two waiting for?!" She waved at her friends, smiling as brightly as the shining sun in the sky.

"We're coming," Alice called out to her and looked at the Duke. "She's full of energy today, is she?"

"Of course," The Duke slumped his shoulders exhaustingly. "It's her birthday. Did you see how she ate her lunch earlier?"

"Yes, Your Grace. Miss Suzume enjoyed her delicious lunch." Alice giggled, her hand close to her lips. "Now, come along. You should buy the birthday girl something from the booth." Alice dragged the Duke to the booth.

The booth seller was selling jewelry, hair accessories, vintage lace paper fans, and artificial flowers. Suzume looked at the items, and the seller smiled charmingly at her.

"Something caught your eye, pretty young lady?"

Suzume blushed, pouting her lips cutely, and puffed her cheeks. She wasn't used to compliments from strangers. Only her master, mistress, and Sir Rob can compliment her. The seller chuckled at her reaction, and Suzume was in a good mood, so she wasn't offended. Instead, she appreciated the seller's compliment. She chose what she wanted and showed it to the Duke and Alice.

The Duke and Alice split their savings to buy Suzume an emerald crystal necklace, a light blue flower hair clip, a white vintage paper fan, and pink artificial carnation flowers in a white pail vase. After the purchase, Suzume, Alice, and the Duke walked towards a cafe and rested there.

"Thank you for your gifts," Suzume said gratefully. "I wish Mr. Zain and the others were here. Too bad they are busy."

"You're welcome, Miss Suzume." Alice smiled at her. "Ah, yes. It's Unfortunate."

"I am a gentleman, after all," The Duke told Suzume kindly.

The Duke knew the truth. Zain, Caph, Kiyomaro, and Gash were preparing Suzume's birthday party at his estate. When the Duke learned Suzume's new acquaintances and friends were invited, he was anxious about the idea. It's too risky for him to interact with them in a crowded room. But the Duke didn't want to oppose the idea, as it was Suzume's birthday, and he didn't want to disappoint her.

4: 12 PM, Duke's Estate

Meanwhile, at the Duke's estate, Zain, Caph, Kiyomaro, Gash, and the newcomers, Ditunka, Marika, Zuzka, Elle Chivas, and Momon were decorating the party room with party balloons, window curtains, and banners. There were gifts on the table, and Rob entered the party room with a two-shelf vintage stainless steel trolley with snacks, a teapot, and tea cups.

"I believe it is time for a break," Rob smiled.

"Thanks, Mr. Rob!"

Everyone paused on the decorations and approached the trolley. Each person enjoyed fresh hot tea and cookies.

"I wonder what kind of dinner we're eating together?" Kiyomaro asked.

"How about a yellowtail?!" Gash added, his mouth already drooling.

"How about meat pot pies?!" Caph raised her hand, suggesting her favorite food.

"How about a epřo Knedlo Zelo?" Ditsuka suggested her national food.

"How about a Shark chutney?" Marika clapped her hands together, and her eyes twinkled.

Everyone just gaped at her in shock, silence full of the party food for a few seconds.

"You eat sharks?" Kiyomaro broke the silence, his expression paled in discomfort.

"Sharks...doesn't sound tasty," Gash added, feeling a little sick in his stomach.

"What's a shark?" Caph asked in curiosity, earning astounding glances from the others.

"Ah..." Marika nervously responded. "It's a national food of my country."

"Is that so?" Ditsuka responded, her shoulders slumped.

"How about we let Suzume choose?" Zain suggested, attempting to clear the awkward atmosphere at the party. "She's the birthday girl, after all!"

"I agree," Rob nodded cheerfully.

"Mr. Rob, please leave the Japanese cooking to me." A voice spoke out.

"Huh?" Everyone turned around and faced Kotone and her companions.

"That's a lovely suggestion, Miss Mizukawa," Alice also appeared, smiling at Kotone politely. "Should we work together to create western and Japanese food?"

"I appreciate your help," Kotone bowed her head. "Please lead me to the kitchen."

"Of course, please follow me," Alice exited the party food as Kotone and her companions followed her.

"Who was the cute Japanese woman?!" Zain exclaimed in surprise, grinning and gazing lecherously. "I must know her name!"

"That Japanese woman is Suzume's older sister, you moron!" Caph smacked him on his head in irritation, knocking him out. "Show respect, damn it! I'm sick of your lecherousness, Zain!"

"Thank goodness you punished him, Miss Caph," Kiyomaro twitched his right eye in disgust and raised his shaking fist. "I was about to punish him myself with Gash's lightning, and it wouldn't be pretty to watch."

"Zain can be rude sometimes," Gash scowled.

"I'll get him out of here," Caph grabbed Zain's legs and dragged him out of the party room.

"Umm, shall we go back to the decorations now?" Elle urged quietly.

Everyone nodded at her in agreement, and Rob bowed his head before leaving the party to help Alice and Kotone in the kitchen.

4: 30 PM, Main Estate, London

Walter returned from his school, and he's infuriated as hell. He had gotten into an argument with Arthur over their older brothers and left school early. He didn't care if his mother scolded him for ditching classes. As he stomped towards his bedroom, Walter's ears caught Viola's cheery voice. He stood, looking at her closed door.

"Shall we go to the birthday party now?"

"I think we should still bring your brother, Lady Radthorne." Akira's voice suggested.

"Who cares about stupid Walter? Like I told you before, he'd snitch on us!"

"I mean, he hasn't seen your cursed brother in years?"

"Walter despises him, Mr. Mizukawa. Why should we bother bringing him? He'd just ruined the party with his crappy mood."

"...If you say so," Akira sounded like he pitied Walter. "You do know that it's almost time for Japanese lessons."

"Darn it! Can we just skip it for today?!" Viola exclaimed in an annoyed tone. "We'll be late for the birthday party!"

"I'm sorry, Lady Radthorne, but I don't want to anger your mother."

"You're right."

'So, there's a birthday party happening at my despicable firstborn brother's estate, and I'm not invited even though I am his younger brother?! Today isn't even his birthday!" Walter was absorbed in his thoughts as he continued to his bedroom, his hands in his pockets. 'Is there a third party involved?'

Then, Walter recalled a short conversation between Owen and Miloslav earlier.

"Today is Miss Suzume's birthday, and she's having a birthday party at her pupil's estate!" Owen exclaimed in excitement. "Arthur and Clive are invited, so that's means we also invited!"

"Hell bloody yeah!" Miloslav winked at Owen, giving him a thumbs up. "Let's go after school!"

Walter realized who was the birthday girl. He felt sick in his stomach and slammed his fist against the wall, frightening some maids and butlers nearby. Walter was now enraged in a sudden jealousy.

'Suzume Mizukawa is his Japanese tutor?! What the hell?! That's why Mr. Mizukawa is tagging along with Viola to the birthday party! One way to find out. I'm going to the birthday party too. Arthur and the others will be there soon."

Walter felt a little better. Suzume was the reason behind the excitement, not his wretched firstborn brother, and he couldn't blame Owen and Miloslav. Suzume was like a serene siren, and like a fool, Walter also fell under her spell, or maybe he still hadn't figured out why she kept obsessing his mind.

'I'm exhausted as hell. I need to nap.' Walter entered his bedroom and closed the door behind him.

4: 45 PM, Kirkland Estate, London

As a coachman sat in the driver seat of a carriage and waited, Arthur tried to get Owen's hands off his leg while Clive facepalmed in annoyance. Kenneth, Arthur's and Owen's eldest sibling, approached them.

"What's with the bloody commotion?" Kenneth frowned, folding his arms.

"Kenneth!" Owen whined, finally releasing his grip from Arthur's leg, and stood up. My little brother wouldn't let me attend the birthday party! I"m the one who gave him a tip about the missing girl!"

"You weren't invited, you bloody fool!" Arthur scowled at Owen. "Stay home! Someone needs to take care of Peter and Audrey anyway!"

"They can come too, you know!"

"The estate we're going to is the home of a cursed Duke with a touch of death! It's too risky to bring too many people, damn it!"

"I have no idea what's going on here," Kenneth said, sighing in dismay. "but, Arthur. Do you think you're being unfair? I mean," Kenneth smiled slightly in amusement. "You could always use a protection spell from your spell book to protect yourself and the guests from the Duke's curse, right?"

"Don't give Owen ideas, Kenneth!" Arthur exclaimed at his older brother's suggestion. "How about you mind your bloody damned business and prepare yourself to become the next head of our family?!"

"As the future head of our family, it is my job to be concerned about the well brings of my siblings, " Kenneth spoke sternly. "So, pardon me, Arthur."

"You mean half-siblings," Arthur scowled at him in disgust.

"Arthur," Kenneth rubbed his forehead in distress. "I don't care about us having different mothers. You, Victoria, Owen, and Peter are still my little siblings."

"Hmph, fine." Arthur sighed in defeat, calming down. "There's no point of infighting. Let's go. We don't want to be late."

"Have fun," Kenneth smiled once everyone was in the carriage and headed back to the mansion as the carriage left his family's estate.

5: 08 PM, 29 Hanbury Street, Whitechapel, London

"Why the hell are we even here, Alfred?" Mateo asked nervously. He, Alfred, and an Alaskan girl named Amka scrolled around, looking for something to do. It's almost dark, and the street freaked Mateo out. He wanted to head back to the boarding house. "Don't tell me that we're playing heroes again. One of these days, you're going to get us killed. You know this is the street where the second victim of Jack the Ripper was found, right?"

"Chill, dude," Alfred grinned cheerfully. "From what I heard, the psycho is dead. He's no longer stalking these streets."

"I hope you are right, Alfred." Amka glared at him. "Or else I'll kick your ass for spreading misinformation. I ain't in the mood to see dead bodies tonight."

"Seriously, I'm not-" Alfred paused and noticed trouble ahead. "What the hell are those men doing?"

"It's best if we stay out of it," Mateo warned Alfred. "I don't want to get my ass in trouble just because you like to play the hero."

Amka noticed there were no policemen around, and people were just walking passed the troubling scene like it was nothing. Were they that apathetic in the Whitechapel? The men were harassing young girls, demanding money from them.

The men were Cashton Thompson, Qiang Wu, and Eugene Beauchene, three criminals who made their living off thieving. Alfred was intensely pissed now. He and Amka stomped toward the men while Mateo stood back cowardly.

"What the fuck are you bastards doing?! Leave the poor girls alone!" Amka shouted at the men angrily.

"Huh?!" Cashton's left eyebrow twitched as he scowled at Amka. "And who in the fuck are you, miss?! Move along! I'm sure mommy's waiting for you at home, ya tramp!"

"I'll show you who's a tramp around here!" Amka stepped on Cashton's foot and punched him in the face. Cashton's nose was bleeding, and he growled at her in pure rage. He tried to attack her by lunging at her neck, but Amka dodged. Cashton tripped into an area of waste. "Hmph!" Amka spitted on him. "Asshole."

"Why you!" Qiang took out a pocket knife and attempted to stab Amka, but Alfred kicked him in the back, causing him to slam onto the ground. "You fucking shitty brat!" Qiang quickly got up and rushed to Alfred in enrage.

"Whoopies!" Alfred dodged Qiang, and the Chinese criminal fell into a puddle of horse poop. "Ha ha ha ha! A fitting end of a criminal!"

The bystanders laughed and pointed their fingers at Qiang. Eugene was about to escape, but Mateo threw a rock at his back, causing him to fall on his face. Cashton, Qiang, and Eugene regrouped and saw a policeman running toward them.

"Stop, you thieves!" The policeman demanded.

"Damn it! Let's retreat!" Cashton fleed along with Qiang and Eugene.

"How convenient!" Alfred laughed as the policeman ran past him. "The hero plan totally went well!"

"You damned right, Alfred," Amka grinned proudly, putting her hands on her hips.

"I'm sorry," Mateo approached his friends, his shoulders slumped. He has a guilty expression. "I should have helped you two earlier."

"Hey, don't swear it, dude!" Alfred winked, giving him a thumbs up. "What matters is that you did the right thing at the last minute!"

The bystanders clapped for the heroic actions and went on their separate ways. The young girls walked over to Alfred, Amka, and Mateo, looking grateful.

"Thank you for protecting us from the horrible men!" The blonde smiled cheerfully. "You were very cool!"

"It was amazing." The red-headed one said quietly.

"...I was scared..." The black-haired one has tears in her eyes.

"There, there." Amka patted her on the shoulder. "You're safe."

"What are your names?" Alfred asked.

"Emilico."

"Lou."

"...Rum."

Alfred, Amka, and Madeo introduced themselves and walked the young girls home. Maybe they would find a boarding house on the way to retire for the night. After all, danger sure loved to stalk the Whitechapel streets at these hours.

5: 48 PM, London Bridge, London

Walter didn't expect to be in the same carriage as Peter and Audrey as they traveled to the grim reaper's estate. Viola and Akira had left his home 30 minutes ago, and Peter had brought his own coachman and carriage. Peter and Audrey were upset that Arthur never told him about the birthday party. Walter sympathized with Peter's and Audrey's dismay, thinking Arthur was a horrible older brother for leaving his little brother and a young girl behind. Peter and Audrey sat together while Walter sat across from them.

"Geez, what's up with the fuss about this birthday girl?" Audrey rolled her eyes in annoyance. "She's just like any other foreign girl. She's not special."

"I heard she's cute," Peter grinned.

"Who cares?!" Audrey snapped. "There's more to a girl than her looks, Peter! Geez! You boys are the same, waiting for a chance to woo her! Hmph!" Audrey crossed her arms and turned her head away, pouting, still annoyed with the situation that she, Peter, and Walter were in. Speaking of Walter, Audrey shot a suspicious stare at him.

"What is it, Miss Audrey?" Walter sighed.

"You haven't seen your older brother in years," Audrey said. "So, why the sudden change of heart?"

"I-" Walter turned his eyes away from her, blushing slightly. "Don't get the wrong idea. I'm not going to that creep's place to see him! I'm just-"

"I knew it!" Audrey pointed at him, laughing. "You've also fallen under the siren's spell!" Audrey shrugged her hands, shaking her head in disappointment. "Men. You all want one thing, and the one thing is a submissive lady."

"Aren't you too young to know these kinds of things?" Walter twitched his left eyebrow, annoyed with the young girl's claims.

"Oh, please, Mr. Radthorne! I have an older brother who wouldn't shut up about his lover! Geez!"

"Same with my older brothers," Peter chuckled. "Especially my second oldest-"

"DON'T SAY THAT WORD! I BEG YOU!" Walter shouted in distress, ruffling his hair.

Peter and Audrey have forgotten that the words two and second triggered Walter, so they remain quiet for the rest of the ride. Walter has ruined the mood with his middle-child complex, and frankly, Peter can see why Walter has sickened Arthur and Clive already.

6: 08 PM, Paris, France

Meanwhile, a red-haired boy in a black overcoat and black top hat and his pet dog entered an alley in the slums to meet up with a group of people. A red-haired man in a black suit leaned against the wall, having a cigarette in his mouth.

"Are you causing trouble again, Phantom R, or should I say, Raphael?" The man asked, grinning at him.

"Hey, I need to steal valuable art to survive, you know?" Raphael shrugged and sat on a barrel. "So, how are things with you, Dante?"

"Gathering information for the Quack and Noe," Dante smoked his cigarette. "And for other people who requested my services."

"It sounds fun," Raphael grinned, amused with Dante's job.

"It sure as hell isn't, lad." Dante frowned and pointed his cigarette toward Raphael. "Not when your life is on the line. It's dangerous to be an information broker. People killed for sensitive information."

"I know. It's only a joke, Dante."

"Ugh, you're still a lad, Raphael. You're just having fun, fooling the police while I have to deal with the Quack."

"The one that calls you baldie, right?" Raphael grinned like a Cheshire cat, holding his laughter.

"Laugh it off, Raphael. I'm used to it," Dante sighed in grief, throwing his cigarette to the ground and stepping on it.

"I knew I would find you two here," Fleur Bonnefoy and her adoptive brother, Pierre, entered the alley. "You know it's shady to be meeting in the slums." She folded her arms and tilted her head, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. "Right?" She adjusted her glasses.

"Yep," Raphael grinned at her. "Now, are you going to snitch us to the police, Miss Bonnefoy?"

"No," Fleur shook her head as she waved her hand indifferently. She placed her hand on her hip. "It isn't my business. Just be careful. Susceptible information gathering and thievery are dangerous occupations, after all."

"Right. So, where's Francis? I know Francoise's in Italy right now." Dante asked.

"He's still in England," Pierre laughed. "We don't know when he'd come back. Knowing him, he'd probably bring new people home," He shrugged his arms, giving Dante an awkward smile. "You know how he is. He must promote his beloved country."

"I agree," Raphael smirked, putting his hands into his pockets. "I mean, we're talking about France, the country known for its romantic atmosphere. Tourist attractions should keep our country busy for a while."

"So, you must have heard," Fleur gazed at Rapheal, having her hand on her arm, turning her eyes away sadly. "About the riots."

"Yeah," Dante responded guiltily. "I hate to say this, but it isn't my concern. Let the government handle the riots."

"Good point," Raphael tilted his hat. "I have my own issues to deal with." He added quietly, his tone full of regret.

"Geez," Pierre put his arms behind his head and turned around causally. He gazed at the starry night. "I know things are shit right now, but longest we still got hope for a better future, I know we can overcome anything that threatened to suck us in."

Everyone just gave Pierre blank looks. A family of a husband, a wife, and four children in rugged clothes walked past the alley, carrying food, water, and supplies for the harsh cold night. Before anyone could respond to Pierre, a shooting star passed in the sky.

"I just made a wish," Pierre turned his head over his shoulder and grinned at the others brightly.

Everyone smiled slowly at Pierre, knowing Pierre was trying to soothe their feelings about the social class issues. Raphael's dog, Fondue, woofed, wagging his tail happily. They nodded to each other and went on their separate ways.

6: 28 PM, Two-hour away from London town

The Duke gazed at Suzume as her eyes were closed and her hands clasped together. They sat on a concrete bench, waiting for their ride back home. Earlier, Zain informed the Duke and Suzume that Viola's coachman would pick them up. Alice left the town two hours ago to go back home and help Rob prepare dinner. The Duke hoped the coachman arrive soon as it was getting cold, and Suzume didn't bring something warm to wear.

"Suzume, aren't you cold?" The Duke asked concernedly.

"No," Suzume reopened her eyes and gazed at the Duke, smiling at him gently. "I made a wish. A shooting star passed by a few minutes ago." Suzume placed her hands on her lap.

"Oh," The Duke smiled at her. "What did you wish for?"

"Now, now," Suzume winked at him, her finger close to her lips. "It's a secret." She grinned at him.

"O-of course!" The Duke blushed, flustered by her wink. Thank goodness he was still wearing his bird-like beak mask, or else Suzume would have seen his pink cheeks. Suzume had an adorable side that she only showed to the Duke, Alice, and Rob. "Your wish won't come true if you told anyone."

"That's right," Suzume nodded pleasingly. "I wish the circus was in town tonight. Zain and Caph told me they are in London at this hour." She put her head down in disappointment, and her shoulders slumped. "Also, we did not even get a chance to eat Chinese food since the restaurant was packed."

"Yes, that was unfortunate, and we didn't get a chance to enjoy a boat ride." The Duke added sadly.

Suzume whimpered, her lips quivering. The Duke wished he could hug her, but obviously, he couldn't. Suzume lifted her head and moved closer to his face. There was a desire in her eyes, and the Duke's heart pounded.

"Do you think you can give me a boat ride on the river nearby your estate next time, Master?" She pleaded, clasping her hands together. She turned her eyes away shyly. "Alone?" Her cheeks flushed.

"Sure..." The Duke nodded to her politely. He felt guilty for accepting such a romantic request behind Alice's back. Sure, the Duke's in love with Alice, but he still has affection towards Suzume. He, Alice, and Rob got to know Suzume for two years, and they can't imagine their lives without her. She promised him that she'd help him find a way to break his curse and won't return to Japan until his curse was lifted. "Oh," The Duke spotted the carriage coming their way. "Our ride is here." He stood.

"Finally! We can go home and eat dinner!" Suzume leaped off the bench and stretched her arms out. "I can't wait to see Miss Alice, Mr. Rob, my siblings, and the others!"

"Me too," The Duke smiled as the carriage arrived.

7: 48 PM, The Duke's estate

"Party!" Peter and Audrey ran excitedly into the Duke's estate after their carriage arrived.

"Geez, what did my firstborn brother do to deserve such attention?" Walter had gotten off the carriage and frowned at the other parked carriages. "This is so damned infuriating. Why must the birthday party take place at his home?!" Walter entered the estate. "Wait until I-" Walter paused and widened his eyes at Arthur and Clive, who were also there, looking back at him with questioning expressions. "What the hell are you guys doing here?!" He exclaimed in a surprised tone.

"We're about to ask you the same question," Arthur and Clive stared at Walter in annoyance simultaneously.

"This is my brother's estate, so I have a reason to be here! Did you guys forget I also helped you with the missing case?"

"All you did was complain." Arthur and Clive told Walter in a bored tone simultaneously once again.

Walter gritted, his left eyebrow twitching in irritation. He remembered the nasty argument he had with Arthur at school today? He put his head down in guilt.

"Arthur, I'm sorry about our argument at school."

"Hmph," Arthur looked away from Walter in disgust. "Let's go, Clive."

"Yeah..." Clive responded to him in an awkward tone.

Before the boys could leave, Viola and Akira emerged from the stairs, and Viola locked her eyes on Walter's, and her cheerful expression became displeasure.

"What the bloody hell are you doing here, Walter?!" Viola stomped towards him as he backed away from her. "You have the nerve to follow me to our eldest sibling's home, you sneaky dipwad!"

"Viola, I just wanted to speak to big brother," Walter chuckled nervously, attempting to give her his charming smile.

"Whatever," Viola turned around and crossed her arms. "Better not inform mother, Walter." She added in a warning tone. "Let's go, Mr. Mizukawa, Lord Arthur, and Lord Clive."

"Of course," Arthur and Clive nodded, smiling, and followed Viola.

"I'm sorry, Lord Radthorne," Akira looked at Walter in pity and bowed his head. "Lady Radthorne doesn't want anyone to ruin my sister's birthday."

Your sister?" Walter blinked, pretending he didn't know. He just wanted answers to confirm his thoughts from earlier.

"Yes, Suzume is my older sister. She and the Duke haven't returned home yet."

'She's spending time with the grim reaper?!'

"Is something the matter, Lord Radthorne? You looked quite upset."

"No, I'm fine," Walter told Akira, smiling at him charmingly. "It's just that I Haven't seen my brother in years. I'm going to check out this place."

"Oh, all right," Akira smiled back. "You are indeed a gentleman, Lord Radthorne. I'll see you at the party." Akira turned around and ascended the stairs.

Walter smirked as his eyes glinted slyly. It's time for him to creep around the estate.

7: 50 PM, the Party room, the Duke's estate

Alice smiled at the sight of the party room. The guests socialized while the children played the birthday games. Rob walked around, offering fruit punch to the guests. Gash ate the yellowtail happily while Kiyomaro scolded him to eat properly. Kotone gracefully explained the Japanese culture and language to Marika and Zuzka as the girls watched her with curiosity in their eyes. Alice was impressed with Kotone's English and thought she must have been studying the English language for years.

"Darn it, the birthday girl is still not here!" Owen whined. "I want to see her and take her hand in marriage."

""Yeah, me too!" Miloslav added, also displeased.

"Geez, you boys are dumb," Ditsuka commented, annoyed. "Too bad Miss Pfeifer isn't here. She was too sick to come."

"It is a shame, is it?" Elle clasped her together, her eyes closed. "I hope the Lord heals her wounds."

Arthur and Clive leaned against the wall, standing by the window. They watched as Zain and Caph did a small performance for the children with their magic. However, their expressions were soured. They only came to the party because Suzume invited them and wanted to express her thanks for finding her at the church six weeks ago.

"Knowing Walter, he's probably creeping around." Clive scoffed.

"Honestly, Clive. I don't give a shit about Walter's family drama." Arthur told Clive in a distasteful tone. "I'm so done with Walter and his bullshit."

"Yet, Walter has been our friend ever since we were children," Clive reminded him, giving him a sad gaze.

"I know, Clive." Arthur gazed back at him. "I know. It's just that we need to stay away from him for a while."

"Yeah, that's true." Clive returned his attention to the magic show as the children applauded and demanded an encore.

8: 12 PM, second floor, the Duke's estate

Walter skulked the hallway on the second floor and checked each door. The doors were locked, and he throught it was suspicious. He came across one room, and the door was unopen. He jarred the door and took a peek inside. Thanks to the moonlight shining through the window, Walter got to see what the room looked like. The bedroom looked similar to Akira's back home.

"Pardon me?" A feminine voice asked frostily behind him. "Do you need something?"

Walter startled and turned around, leaning against the door. His eyes locked into a pair of maroon-colored glacial eyes. A pretty girl held a candle holder and narrowed her eyes suspiciously, and Walter couldn't believe it. This girl was Suzume, Akira's older sister, and he wanted to apologize to her, but he was too stunned. Owen and Miloslav were right about her appearance alone. His cheeks reddened, and his heart started to pound.

"You have the same eye color as my Master and Lady Radthorne," Suzume told him quietly.

"That's because I am Viola's older brother, Walter." Walter introduced himself awkwardly, his eyes turned away from Suzume. "And I assured your master is my cursed firstborn brother."

"Oh, I see. May you a least let me into my own bedroom? The party room is in the fourth room."

'...' Walter's expression turned pale as he stared at her in disbelief.

"Why are you staring at me? Did I say something upsetting?"

"I..." Walter stammered. "Well-"

"My master is in his study if you want to speak with him."

"I'm sorry," Walter regained his composure and moved away from Suzume's door. Once Suzume entered her bedroom and closed the door behind her. Walter left the hallway and headed towards the party room. 'What was with that girl? Why is she so cold?'

Walter didn't want to attend the party anymore. He wanted to go home and recorrect his thoughts, but he couldn't go home without Viola and Akira. He originally came here to see the birthday girl since she's been in his damned mind for a while now, and he never cared about his cursed brother. Walter had gone through shit for years, thanks to his firstborn brother.

'Just rather well see how he's doing,' He thought bitterly.

8: 28 PM, the Duke's study, the Duke's estate

The Duke sat at his desk in his study, trying to read a novel, but he closed the book in frustration. The damned curse prevented him from having fun at the party on his own estate, and he did not feel well about it. Maybe he should retire for the night and go to sleep early or may he should put on his town disguise and go back to the party. The Duke needed to do something to keep himself from going insane.

"I see that you haven't changed," A bitter voice reached the Duke's ears.

"Huh?" The Duke stared into his younger brother's eyes. "Walter, my little brother?"

"You're no brother of mine," Walter glared at him. "You're my rival."

The Duke sighed. He learned about Walter's middle-child complex from Viola. Even when they were children, the Duke knew Walter hated him. Walter, a least, has the decency to speak to him in private. Suzume would be exposed to their family drama if the reunion was at the party. The Duke could feel his younger brother's hostility towards him.

"Well, I'm going home," Walter scowled. "Obviously, tonight isn't the best time for us to talk. I'm coming back tomorrow." He turned around and paused before he asked a question. "How long has she been working here?"

"She?" The Duke raised his left eyebrow, confused by his brother's question.

"Don't play dumb. Your Japanese maid."

"So, you met Suzume. I'm sorry, Walter, but I can't tell you. It's part of the contract agreement, and I'm sure it'd be the same to you and Viola about her younger brother."

"Whatever." Walter spat angrily and exited the study.

The Duke just slumped in his chair depressingly. All he wanted was to get along with Walter. The Duke knew it would be a matter of time until his mother discovered Viola's forbidden visits, and he was also worried about Akira's involvement since Viola was the type of girl who loved to drag people anywhere with her.

'I hope Walter did not give Suzume a bad impression of him.' The Duke thought worriedly, resting his head on his desk. 'And I hope Suzume's younger brother doesn't get in trouble with mother.'

8: 38 PM, the party room, the Duke's estate

"Surprise!" Everyone exclaimed at Suzume in a cheerful tone. "Happy Birthday, Miss Mizukawa!"

Suzume couldn't believe her eyes. Everyone was there, even the people she was acquainted with. The party room was decorated beautifully, and Suzume could feel a positive energy. This was the first time her birthday was celebrated in a room full of people. In Suzume's first year at the Duke's estate, Suzume's birthday was celebrated with a small cake in the Duke's dining room, and last year, Zain and Caph attended a small birthday party of hers. Suzume covered her mouth with her hands, her eyes glimmering in appreciation.

"Thank you very much!" Suzume bowed her head gratefully.

Everyone nodded to her, and her siblings approached her, carrying gifts.

"Happy seventeenth birthday, Suzume." Kotone handed over her gift, her expression still stoic. "These gifts are from Lord Rivers and his younger sister."

"The Rivers siblings brought me gifts?" Suzume tilted her head, blinking her eyes in confusion as she received the gifts.

"Yes," Kotone nodded. "The siblings are indeed strange."

"There's nothing strange about polite people buying gifts, Kotone," Akira told her, chuckling awkwardly.

"Still," Kotone folded her arms and turned her head away. "I'm still cautious of Lord Rivers and his sister."

"Please tell Lord Rivers and Lady Rivers that I thank them for the gifts," Suzume smiled.

"Of course, I shall speak to Kiyomaro," Kotone walked over to Kiyomaro.

"Oh, these gifts from Mr. Naruhodo and Miss Mikotoba," Akira said. "They couldn't make it to the party because Mr. Natsume got into trouble again."

"Is that so?" Suzume's eyes twitched, feeling a little annoyed. "Now, I believe Mr. Natsume is cursed with bad luck."

'Ha ha ha." Akira laughed calmly.

"Miss Mizukawa!" Owen walked to her and handed over a rose to her. "Your beauty allured me! Please be my-"

"Hey!" Miloslav shoved him away. "I saw her first, pal!" He snatched his head nervously. "I'm sorry, Miss Mizukawa. I am also allured by your aura."

"Okay?" Suzume stared at Miloslav blankly in apathy, her tone full of sudden dispassion.

"You fools, behave yourselves! Geez!" Arthur scolded his older brother and Miloslav, appearing along with Clive.

"Get over here, Miloslav!" An irritated Ditsuka also appeared and pulled him by the ear, dragging him away.

"Ouch! I'm sorry!" Miloslav groaned in displeasure.

"Hey, buddy. The children need you." Caph took Owen's wrist and dragged him back to Peter, Audrey, Gash, and Momon.

"But I don't wanna," Owen whined.

Once Miloslav and Owen were gone, Arthur sighed in grief and turned his attention to Suzume.

"I'm sorry about my older brother's and his friend's rudeness."

"It is all right, Mr. Kirkland," Suzume responded indifferently. "It didn't bother me."

However, Akira already knew it wasn't the truth. Suzume's clasped hands at the front were still trembling in anxiety. Because Suzume had become a pro at hiding her true feelings, no one else didn't expect a thing. Akira noticed Kotone's eyes were on Arthur and Clive like a hawk and had no doubt she witnessed the thing with Owen and Miloslav earlier.

"I'm glad to hear," Arthur smiled in relief. "Oh, this is my childhood friend, Clive Dove." Arthur introduced. "I'm sure you probably have seen him at the church that night."

"Yes," Suzume nodded, looking at Clive. "I am good at remembering faces, you see. It's nice to meet you, Mr.-"

"Lord Dove," Clive corrected her, giving her a charming smile, and placed his hand on his chest and bowed to her gentlemanly. "I am an aristocrat, just like Arthur."

"Oh, I have no idea," Suzume said. "Please forgive my rudeness, but I feel a little uncomfortable with you and Lord Kirkland."

"Big sister," Akira narrowed his eyes at Suzume in empathy.

"Of course, we understand." Arthur understood. "We-"

"Hey, Miss Mizukawa!" A grinning Viola approached her with her hands on her lips. "I heard you met my other stupid brother."

"Ah, yes, Lord Radthorne. I indeed did." Suzume frowned at Viola in disgust. "I caught him peeking into my bedroom. Creeps aren't ideal in my eyes."

"Ouch," Arthur widened his eyebrows in amazement while Clive snickered.

"Yes," Viola sighed, shrugging her shoulders. "Walter is a fool. It's best to avoid him. Don't let him know that you are a secondborn. Trust me, you would be spared from a major headache."

Suzume blinked. Viola's warning was a strange one. She noticed her master was missing from the party.

"Pardon me," Suzume bowed respectively to Arthur, Viola, and Clive. "I need to look for my master. It's nice meeting you again, Lord Kirkland and Lord Clive."

"Dearest brother is in his study," Viola informed her.

"Thank you, Lady Radthorne." Suzume turned around and walked out of the party room before Arthur and Clive could respond to her.

8: 42 PM, the Duke's study, the Duke's estate

"Come in." The duke heard a knock, his eyes glued on a book. His eyes widened when Suzume entered. "Suzume? Should you be at your birthday party?" He was wondering why she was here instead of in the party room.

"I would rather be in here with you, master," Suzume said, approaching a bookshelf and searching for a book. "The party was getting too tense for me." She added, taking a deep breath. "And I am miserable because you aren't there."

"Suzume.." The Duke gazed sorrowfully. "A birthday girl should not be dejected."

"I know. I just wished my mother was still here."

"Suzume.." The Duke felt very bad. He remembered his mother well, and he knew his mother was still waiting for him, according to Viola. Suzume had told him, Alice, and Rob about her parents in the past, and her parents passed away when she and her siblings were still young, and they were forced to live with an aristocratic family and had a hard life there. Eventually, they were kicked out and lived in the slums, dealing with hunger, bitter coldness in the winter, and cruelty. "I'm sorry."

"I did not mean to," Suzume covered her mouth, turning her eyes in shame.

"Suzume, it is okay." The Duke said to her. "You don't have to go back to the party."

"Okay," Suzume's expression brightened a little.

"How about we read a book together," The Duke offered, standing and smiling at her kindly. "Also, you looked pretty in your kimono tonight, Suzume."

Suzume's face turned completely red, and she downcasted her eyes shyly. She fidgeted with her fingers.

"Thank you. I would love to read with you."

9: 18 PM, The Duke's estate

The birthday party was over, and everyone was heading home. As the carriages left the estate, inside of a red-colored carriage, Viola glared at Walter while Akira sat near her, having an awkward expression, his eyes closed and mouth open.

"Where the heck have you been, Walter?" Viola asked, her eyebrows narrowed, still upset with him. "Whatever. I'll get to the point," Viola sighed. "You did not make a good impression on Mr. Mizukawa's older sister." She glanced at Akira.

"Don't look at me, Lady Radthorne," Akira was flustered with her glance.

"Which Mizukawa?" Walter asked, pretending to be confused, giving Viola his signature charming smile.

"Don't be a dumbass, Walter. I'm talking about the birthday girl."

"Oh,her." Walter rested his forehead on the window, gazing at the outside as the carriage ride passed the trees.

"Creep." Viola rolled her eyes and chatted with Akira about her tomorrow's plans.

'I suppose I'll see her again tomorrow...' Walter closed his eyes and smiled a little. 'Her aura...is...mysterious.'
