Author's Notes: Hi all, sorry it took so long to get this chapter out. My daughter has been sick three times in the last month, ugh! Just little colds, she is in kindergarten. I think the kids in her class just spend their days sneezing on each other. Half of her class was absent last week. Anyway, it's been a lot. I promise to try to not let so much time pass without updating again, I need this story.

I want to thank my husband for editing and MadMooey18 for being my beta! I really appreciate it you guys.

Chapter 14: Save My Unicorn!

The smell of sunshine on pine needles filled my nose as I pressed my face into Edward's side. We were cuddling on the floor of the game room, his elegant fingers combing through my hair. I sighed, we were going to save people. We would make this world a better place for all of us.

Rose and Emmett were on the couch facing each other. Every few minutes one would caress the other's face. I tried not to look at them, feeling as if I were intruding.

Jasper dug into the drawer of a side table and came back with a mason jar. He opened it and I crinkled my nose at the stench of skunk. He pulled a tiny orange box of thin papers out and filled it with weed from a sleek black grinder. A complete expert, he rolled a tight joint in moments.

"I think this calls for a safety meeting," he said. Everyone nodded. I looked sideways at Edward.

"Your parents don't care?" I asked.

Alice shrugged, "They think that we've been told what to do enough." She lit the joint and took a long slow hit, holding it in for a moment before she blew out a cloud of smoke. "All things in moderation, right?" she croaked, smoke slowly escaped her mouth.

She passed the joint to Edward who held it between his index finger and thumb as he pressed it into his lips. Ever the gentleman, he turned his head away from me to exhale, ensuring I wasn't bathed in a cloud of smoke.

He raised an eyebrow and held it out to me. I nodded.

"Okay, just take a gentle pull, and hold the smoke in your mouth for a second before inhaling so you can control it," he said, handing the joint to me.

"And don't hold the smoke in your lungs like I did," Alice said, "that's not for novices."

I nodded and sucked in. I didn't get what Edward had meant by keeping the smoke in my mouth and inhaled straight into my lungs. Daggers pierced my chest and a cough ripped out of me, tears streaming down my face as a haze coated the world.

"Fuck, get her some water," Edward said. Jasper shot up and ran to the minibar. He came back with a glass. I couldn't stop the coughs that racked my chest.

"Put your hands over your head, Bella," Jasper instructed. I obeyed and my coughing died down. The room spun and I started to giggle.

"So…no more for you," Edward said with a chuckle.

I closed my eyes and the room swayed. The world swayed. It rocked on the waves of a great ocean. Edward's arm wrapped around me, grounding me, my anchor. He leaned down and kissed my temple and a thrill shot through me at the casual intimacy that we'd developed. I smiled up at my oldest friend and he looked down with warm bloodshot eyes. His chest rumbled, a giggle escaping his soft pink lips. I snorted, he was so cute.

And mine!

I pushed up, letting my lips crash against his. The room tilted again, the carpet switching places with the wall. Edward sprawled across the rug but pulled me with him so that I was lying against his chest. He laughed around the kiss, his lips vibrating against mine. I opened my mouth, inhaling the air from his laugh. He tasted faintly like blue raspberry candy and toothpaste with just a hint of smoke. I thought that I would hate kissing someone after they had been smoking, but it complemented his natural aroma of pine trees and Christmas.

Why does he taste so good?

I probably tasted like olives and tomato juice. He didn't seem to mind since he slipped his tongue between my lips. Sparks shot through me and I moaned, fisting my hands into his silky bronze hair.

"Ahem," a tiny voice chimed from the other side of the coffee table. I shot up from my place on the floor to find Alice staring wide eyed and Jasper trying to stifle a laugh. Edward sat up too, tucking me into his side. I could feel his grin as he kissed the top of my head.

"Shit, I forgot they were here," I whispered.

"Me too," he answered.

"Jesus," Alice groaned.

I looked around the room, "Where did Emmett and Rose go?"

"Oh, they decided to refrain from a public display and went to their room," Jasper said laughing, "which might be advisable for some other people."

Heat crept up my chest and I chewed on my lip. I had never seen Edward's room. Surely I should see it, since I was his partner and we lived in the same house. But if we went now…

"Fuck off, Jazz," Edward growled and interlaced my fingers with his. I smiled up at him through my lashes and he let out a long sigh. I laid back down on the carpet, pulling him with me and stared at the texture on the ceiling. The plaster looked like stars swirling in a galaxy.

"Why do you guys think we're here?" I asked after a few minutes.

A puff of smoke filled the room and Jasper let out a small cough. "That's a tricky question, little lady," he drawled. "Maybe to leave a legacy, maybe to make the world better, maybe we are alive for no other reason but to live. It's the greatest philosophical question."

I laughed, "No asshole, I mean us. As in aliens. Why are we on Earth?"

Edward turned his head and stared into my eyes. I fell into the depths of a vast forest, he and I were children running through the trees. I could almost hear a stream trickling in the distance. I leaned forward to kiss him again, wanting to capture the joy I felt with the mental image or was it a memory? Just before our lips touched I remembered that we were still not alone and pulled away.

"I think that our planet was on the brink of destruction and as a final gift to us, our parents sent us here. Maybe we are all that remains of our species," Edward said, a wistful note in his voice.

I snorted, "So you think you're Superman?"

"Maybe," he said with mock offense. "What's your grand theory, Miss Swan?"

I blushed. My theory was worse than Edward's. "Uhhhh, maybe our species thought that humanity could use a little help?" I stammered. "Like, maybe we were sent on a mission to save the world?" Now that I was saying it out loud, it sounded stupid.

"I love that," Jasper said. "What an awesome idea! We were always meant to be superheroes! Like, maybe they bred us to be soldiers that were deployed to other planets to save the galaxy," A broad smile swept across his face. He leaned across the table, holding up his hand.

"Don't leave me hangin'," he said. I sat up and gave him a high five.

He turned back to Alice, "What do you think, darlin'?"

She started twisting a cocktail napkin in her hands like she had while Rose told her story. Jasper's eyebrows pulled together, "What is it?" He sat down next to her, caressing her shoulder with the back of his hand.

"Oh, I'm fine, lovebug. I just…I don't want to voice my theory," she said, picking up his hand and kissing it.

"Oh come on, I shared mine," Edward whined.

She let out a long breath and looked up at me. Her eyes were full of warmth and concern, "I don't think Bella will like it," she said.

"I'll be okay," I reassured her. It wasn't like I was made of glass.

"Uhhh…okay. I think…maybe…since we're all mated pairs," she looked down and twisted the napkin in her lap. "I think that we were sent as some kind of breeding program to take over the planet through steady propagation," she said so quickly I could barely make it out. "I think this is a form of invasion."

I laughed. Jasper looked between me and Alice like…like we were from another planet. The idea made me laugh even harder. Alice narrowed her eyes, "I'm being serious!"

"I know, it's just," I got out between laughs, "it's just…what an excellent mission!"

Now Edward was looking at me like I had two heads. "That doesn't freak you out?" he asked.

I shrugged.

"As long as you and I are on the same page and go at the speed we feel comfortable with, then I'm as pleased as punch that my objective in life is to have sex with a super hottie as much as possible." I looked at Alice, "I mean, look at him! The first time I saw him I wanted to fall to my knees in worship. We don't even have to have kids if we don't want to, how will they know?"

I glanced back at Edward. It was hard to tell what was brighter, the shade of red that his cheeks had turned, or his beaming smile. I felt my cheeks warm as my drug-addled mind caught up with my mouth.

Oh god, did I say that out loud?

"Alice, quick, anchor him down before he floats away," Jasper said with mock urgency. I buried my face in my hands and Edward pulled me under his arm. It was quickly becoming my favorite place in the world.

"How's it going down here," Emmett said, practically skipping into the room. Rose hesitated behind him.

"Just fine, no salacious revelations," Jasper answered.

"So," Alice said, drawing out the word. "Now that we're all here, maybe we should discuss our plan," she said, effectively changing the subject. I mouthed thanks to her and she winked.

"Well, I think our first priority is the name," Emmett said, dropping onto the couch with a heavy thud. I wondered how long it would take for the frame to buckle if he did that every time he sat down.

I nodded seriously, "A name is obviously the most important consideration."

"It really is, no one will take us seriously if we have a lame name, Bella!"

"If everything goes to plan, no one will know we exist. Let alone the name of our supergroup," Edward said.

"C'mon guys, that's the most fun part," Emmett whined.

"He's right, next you're going to say that we don't need costumes," Rose chimed in from the doorway before walking in and snuggling into Emmett's side. A warm feeling bubbled through my chest and I gave her a thumbs up. She rolled her eyes but smiled.

"We're going to have costumes though, right?" Alice asked.

I chuckled, "Of course we're going to have costumes. What kind of nerd would I be if I vetoed superhero costumes, or a badass supergroup name?"

"Okay, good. So I have also been thinking about this," Jasper started, "How about…Space Rangers?"

"That's terrible, sugarplum. Buzz Lightyear is a space ranger," Alice said, patting Jasper's cheek.

"It's also the name of a short lived science fiction drama from the 90's" I shook my head, "which was also really bad."

"I love that you know that," Edward whispered. I did a little shimmy, pleased that he appreciated my useless trivia knowledge.

"What we need is a long name with a really good acronym," Edward said, "like Scientific and Technological Advanced Research Laboratories…or S.T.A.R. Labs." I got a little turned on that he could just rattle off the full name like that. I looked up at him through my eyelashes as he tucked a lock of my hair behind my ear. My skin tingled in the places his hand had grazed and I bit my lip imagining him touching me more.

"Goddamn, were we this bad?" Jasper whispered to Alice.

"Yes," Edward answered for her without looking away from me.

"That must have been pretty hard to deal with, being in a house full of mates for years," I said, breathing in his sweet breath as it washed across my face. "Being alone while they showered each other with affection, or just showered each other..."

He cringed. "Don't worry, I plan to pay them back in kind." I shivered at the implication of his words.

In the shower.

"Has anyone else ever realized that the acronym for Volturra Advancements in Defense and Genetics is V.A.D.G.?!" Emmett asked incredulously. It startled me out of the bubble that had formed around Edward and me.

"Oh my god it is!" Rose laughed, rolling backward on the couch in a fit of giggles. I thought for a moment that she had lost it. Her demeanor was entirely different from the person I had known these last few weeks.

"I've been an assassin for a corporation called V.A.D.G.? I'm a V.A.D.G. assassin?!" Edward shouted.

"That's a perfect name! The VADG assassins!" Emmett said.

"Not as cool as 'Saka Ninjas', but yes, we all were," Jasper provided.

"I think we can do better. I don't want it to sound like we still do their bidding. How about the V.A.D.G. smashers?" Rose suggested.

Emmett turned and stared at Rosalie, his mouth agape and slowly shaking his head. "I have never loved you more," he said, his eyes filling with emotion.

Rose snorted, "How about the V.A.D.G. blasters?" Emmett held her cheeks in his palms, adoration plain on his face.

"V.A.D.G. bashers," he whispered.

"V.A.D.G. pounders," she said back with a wink.

"This doesn't even sound like we want to hurt Volterra anymore," Jasper said, scrunching his nose in disgust.

"Okay, so nothing to do with V.A.D.G. Can we all agree to that?" Alice asked. "How about Teenage Extraterrestrial Nerds, or T.E.N' s? Because we're all super hot too," she said, eyeing Jasper.

"It's a little…uh…arrogant," I said. Edward nodded, though I wasn't sure why. On a scale from one to ten he was a twenty-five. "I like where you're going with it though. What about…Thermally Energized Extraterrestrial Nerds, or T.E.E.N.s?"

"I hate it," Rose said. "We aren't all nerds like you and Edward."

"Sure we are, you are clearly a car nerd Rose. Emmett is way too into video games and plays 40K with me. Alice and Jasper are into anime and manga, cosplaying and fantasy role playing games…" Edward said, wincing at the end for some reason.

"And Alice likes fantasy romance novels," I added. Edward pinched the bridge of his nose.

"I didn't need to know that," he said.

"No, it isn't like that. She likes some really good ones, so you should read them with me." I looked up and attempted to plead with my eyes.

The tightness in his shoulders relaxed and he brushed my cheek with his knuckles. "Anything you want, love."

I stifled the girlish squeal that threatened to escape my lips. It was the second time he had used that word this morning.

"Fine, I can live with T.E.E.N.s," Rose sneered, "until you guys see the light and name us The VADG Blasters."

"Now for costumes," Alice trilled with jazzed hands raised. She stood and bounced on her toes, pulling Jasper up with her. "Let's go see what we've got!"

I stretched my arms over my head, standing to work out cramps that had developed during the six and a half hour drive. We had left this afternoon, everyone was too excited to wait even one day after we had donned our costumes. We decided that Eugene would be far enough to avoid notice as long as we didn't do anything too extreme. We had chosen a house fire after hearing the report on the CB radio Rose had installed in the dash before we left. The air was buzzing inside the RV, the excitement palpable as Emmett pulled up to the house.

Flames were pouring out of the second story window of the small bungalow. The closest neighbors were miles away and had only reported seeing smoke. With the size of the fire coming from that window, I hoped the inhabitants weren't already dead. Cold damp air washed over me as Edward flung the RV door open and we all jumped out, feet squelching into the wet earth. Edward was wearing his normal black jeans and a motorcycle jacket, Alice had laughed that everyone but Edward was wearing a costume. She had found a pair of black athletic pants and a black crop top to wear. Rose had a black body suit that reminded me of catwoman, she said it was left over from Halloween. It hugged her curves and shimmered in the moonlight. I had dug out a leotard from Alice's closet, it had a cut out that showed most of my back, but was long-sleeved with a high neck. Paired with my black leggings, I felt the part. Well, except for my mask.

I had learned while we'd gotten ready that Alice was obsessed with fashion and had been collecting masks since moving to Forks. There were hundreds, but they were all decorative. We just needed simple domino masks but none of us wanted to wait for them to come by mail. As we filed out of the RV we donned overly embellished masquerade masks. Edward looked like a raven, his was the coolest since he flatly refused to wear anything that wasn't black. I was wearing a gold mask designed so that my right eye looked like a swan. They said it had to be mine, I scowled as the gold filigree tail feathers poked into my forehead.

Alice looked like a porcelain doll in a full face mask with red lips and pink cheeks. I wondered how well she could see in that thing, it was clearly meant to hang on the wall. Jasper looked pretty good in his black suit and phantom of the opera mask, I saw Alice eyeing him for most of the drive.

"Daddy!" a small child's voice cut through the air. Emmett sped in front of us and slammed his shoulder through the front door, flames pushing back into us, licking at his arms. Luckily, he had insisted on a rubber Batman costume. He looked ridiculous, but was protected from the heat. I wondered for a moment what Edward would look like in that costume, he was clearly more suited to the Batman role.

I shook myself out of a fantasy that quickly formed in my mind and tried to focus on the mission.

Why did we pick a fire? It's the only thing that can hurt us.

"Mommy!" the voice called again, anguish clear in her tiny voice.

That's why.

I peeked around Emmett, there were flames blocking the front door, but maybe if we went around back. I caught Edward's eye and he nodded, jogging around the corner with me. I turned the handle to find it cool and unlocked. We strolled right in, Edward signaling the others to come around while I raced up the stairs to the sound of the girl. The smoke was too thick to see through so I crouched down and stopped breathing. We really didn't need to, we just liked to be able to smell. Holding our breath was like closing our eyes, it was uncomfortable to lose the sense but not necessary for our survival. There was a path of small toys leading to a room with pink walls. I crawled in and found a girl that was about four years old sitting in the middle of the room crying. My heart twisted and I wrapped her into my arms, her blond hair tickling my cheek. I raced down the stairs, eager to get her away from the smoke, but once we were outside I saw that she was breathing clearly.

"Where are your parents," Rose asked, crouching down and wiping the girl's tear stained cheeks. I had a sudden instinct that Rose would make a wonderful parent one day.

"In their bedroom, they wouldn't wake up," she cried.

Fuck!

"In the master bedroom," Rose shouted. I saw Emmett's shadow move from the front room to the stairs. Within moments, he and Jasper were carrying a man and a woman in their mid thirties out of the back door and laying them into the wet grass. They weren't breathing.

"Edward, get over here, you're the best at first aid," Alice called as she started to perform CPR on the woman. Edward started the same with the man, pumping his chest and breathing puffs of air into his lungs. We were the best possible people to give CPR since we would never tire and we didn't produce carbon dioxide. The breaths Edward gave the man would be just as oxygen rich as if he were breathing on his own. The only thing better would be an oxygen mask, we just had to keep them alive until the fire truck arrived. I sat down to watch next to Rose who was cradling the little girl in her arms.

The woman started to moan and cough, she would be okay.

"My kitty!" the child exclaimed, suddenly remembering her pet.

Edward looked up at me with a panicked look. I wondered if the fat tuxedo cat I had cuddled a couple days ago belonged to him. I nodded at him and stood.

"Where does he like to sleep?" I asked the girl.

"Under the bed," she said. I sighed, and walked into the house. Once again, I crawled up the stairs so that I could see through the smoke and made my way to the master bedroom. Laying on my belly I peeked under the bed and was rewarded with a growl and a hiss.

Great!

"Come on kitty, you don't want to stay here," I cooed. The cat tensed and backed further under the bed.

"Okay, I'm sorry, we don't have time for this," I said, reaching out and grabbing the cat by the scruff. It hissed and bit and clawed but could not break free of my gentle grasp.

"Sorry bud," I looked around the room and pulled a pillow case off the bed, shoving the cat inside. If I had walked out with him in this state he would have bolted and never come back. I couldn't let that happen, though the cat was aggressive now, it was probably sweet when the house wasn't on fire. I tied a knot into the top of the case and strolled back down stairs. With the fire localized to the kitchen and front room, there really wasn't much danger. I set the sack next to Rose, and glanced back at Edward. The man had sat up and was talking to his wife. Each had a coughing fit every few moments, but they seemed to be okay.

"My fish!" the little girl shouted. I rolled my eyes.

Jasper stood and walked through the back door, coming out within a few minutes with a ten gallon tank. It held a goldfish that had likely come from the fair. I smiled, happy that we had saved all of the inhabitants, not just the humans.

"Anymore pets, my love?" Rose asked.

"My unicorn!" I chuckled.

"You have a pet unicorn?" Emmett asked with a smile.

"Yes, it's my baby! I love it! Please," she begged. Emmett chuckled and strolled through the door, coming back after a minute with a pink stuffed unicorn. He set it gently in the girl's lap and she kissed his cheek and snuggled into it.

In the distance, we heard sirens.

Edward looked up, "That's our cue," he said, shaking the man's hand. Rose lifted the girl and set her down gingerly into her mother's lap and we piled into the RV.

"What will her parents say?" I asked Edward.

"I asked Jim to say that they made it out on their own, he agreed," Edward shrugged then chuckled, "I told him that our parents would ground us if they found out."

I laughed, they would definitely ground us.

Author's Notes: Please review, I love to hear from all of you. I have already written most of the next chapter, so sick kid or not, I will be updating soon.
