By the Light of the Moon
Chapter 1 the criminal is a child
It's already been a day and nothing bad has happened, Harry thought to himself. Hermione, Ron and he were so used to odd occurrences they happened daily. They were at magic school after all, Hogwarts. The school was home to a competitive broomstick sport, talking ghosts, and appearing and vanishing meals. The group sat in the common room chatting about their classes for the semester.
"It's odd isn't it? Not having anything bad happen." Harry said, flipping through his schedule.
"It's a relief" Ron said with a sigh, "its hard being a hero all the time."
Hermione gave him a quizzical look and continued to be absorbed in a large book entitled The Moon and Its Guardians.
"What's that for?" Harry asked peering over the book.
"It's just a bit of preparation for our Defense against the Dark Arts Class this year", she answered.
"I didn't know that the moon was a public enemy", Ron said sarcastically as he continued to dig through his school supplies.
"It says that the guardians that protect the moon are mostly good, but there are those who guard the dark side", Hermione shuddered. "Kind of reminds me of.." She stopped quickly and looked down.
"Voldemort", Harry said gazing out at the full moon that hung outside the window.
Ron quickly cut into the regretted silence. "Well at least we don't have to worry about them. I mean they're on the moon"
He had barely uttered the words when Professor McGonagall, usually a calm person by nature came running through the door with a terrified look upon her usually stern face.
"Students!" she yelled frantically, "No one is to leave this common room, understood?" The students nodded in confusion and whispering broke out among the room.
"Thanks Harry, you jinxed us" Ron said giving him a dirty look.
"What do you think it is?" Hermione asked putting the book down.
The three looked at the book for a minute, then at each other.
"Nah" they said in unison.
MEANWHILE
The teachers of Hogwarts stood in the hallways, frantic. All they knew was that there was a criminal on the campus.
"What do you propose we do?" McGonagall asked Dumbledore. He looked at her from behind his moonlike glasses.
"Nothing" he answered "The only thing we can do is keep the children oblivious"
"If it's a criminal we're after" a pale intimidating Snape cut in. "Why not use magic?" Dumbledore thought for a second then peered out at the full moon.
"Because" he said slowly "The criminal is a child".
The full moon that the students and teachers saw lit the path for a young girl with dark brown hair, and a double crescent on her back. She continued to quickly cut through the foliage and found herself gazing at a castle. This has to be it she thought to herself. The moonlight served as her lantern as she came to a moat.
"A moat, is that all they've got?!" she asked the darkness. With a flick of her wrist, the girl disappeared and found herself within the school's walls. By the light of the moon, she thought to herself.
