Chapter One:

Everything that lives will eventually wither and die. Those with enhanced longevity are no exception. They might be able to live for a significantly larger amount of time than most, but even then, they still might not be able to live all the way through their lengthened lifespan. A pair of particularly notable groups of individuals known for being able to live for a very long time were the Umbra Witches, allies of Inferno, the Realm of Darkness, the home of the Infernals, and the Lumen Sages, allies of Paradiso, the Realm of Light, home of the Angels. The source behind their supernatural longevity, or rather immortality, came from a Contract, willingly selling their souls to their respective allied Realms in exchange for magical power, knowledge and immortality. Being able to live forever until their contracts expire and their souls are dragged to their contracted afterlives. Though they can be sent to their set afterlives prematurely by suffering a mortal blow, being no more nor less than normal human beings in that regard.

Both groups have gone extinct a few times throughout history and in the most recent years, there has only been one known Umbra Witch left in the world. The teenage Umbra Witch from an Alternate Universe by the name of Viola. The inheritor of the name/title of Bayonetta. Having earned the name/title upon defeating a manifestation of the original holder's inner darkness and regrets. Her contracted Infernal being the one known as Cheshire, the Lost Outcast.

Despite not being a normal Umbra Witch nor having the typical weapons of choice of an Umbra Witch, preferring to make use of her ōdachi, the Mab Dachi, and a seemingly infinite amount of magical throwing darts, collectively known as Bull Kiss, instead of wielding a quartet of guns like most Umbra Witches did as a weapon to default back to, Viola was no slouch nor weakling in combat. Especially once she started to get a hang on fighting Angels (and the occasional Demon) throughout her career doing various odd-jobs.

One such odd-job that sent her to the country of Great Britain was being hired to investigate a certain neighborhood that the person hiring Viola suspected was the location of someone important to them. Upon arriving in the neighborhood from within Purgatorio, the parallel dimension of the human world where the Angels of Paradiso and Demons of Inferno did battle, more specifically a small playground, Viola quickly noticed that a group of kids were being mean to another kid. Based on the clear outline that represented people on the other side, the kid the others were being mean to appeared to be a young girl clinging desperately to a tree branch in order to stay out of reach for the mean kids. Something that was both interesting about the girl was the fact that she was seemingly looking Viola in the eyes, despite the fact that she shouldn't be able to see the teenage Umbra Witch in the first place. Taking a quick glance around the area and not finding anyone besides the aforementioned kids present, Viola reached into her jacket and withdrew a Bull Kiss before drawing a magic circle in front of her.

"Really hope that this won't bite me in the ass." Muttered the teenage Umbra Witch as she stepped through the magic circle and into the human world, catching the attention of the girl desperately clinging to the tree branch. At a glance, Viola estimated that the girl (and therefore the rest of the kids) was about five years old. "Please hit the tree and not them." With that small plea, Viola threw the dart past the mean kids' heads and into the trunk of the tree, startling the kids and accidentally causing the girl to fall off the tree branch as the Bull Kiss struck the tree trunk with a rather loud 'twonk'.

"What the-!?" Shouted one of the mean kids as they turned towards the teenage Umbra Witch, not noticing that the girl he and his apparent friends were being mean to quickly ran around them and hid behind the older girl who looked like a punk rocker, practically shaking in fear.

"All right, that's enough dimwits. Leave the girl alone!"

"But she's a freak! She deserves what she gets!" Exclaimed the apparent leader of the mean kids, a rather fat boy with blond hair that quite frankly looked more like it was taped onto his head rather than naturally grown, causing the young girl hiding behind the older girl to flinch. Giving the young girl a reassuring gesture, namely a pat on the head, Viola didn't bother to keep herself from frowning as she sent the fat kid a glare, withdrew another Bull Kiss from her jacket and started twirling the magical throwing dart between the fingers of the hand not occupied with patting the young girl on the head.

"She looks normal to me. Having and/or needing glasses isn't that weird." Unknown to Viola, the girl seemed to have spotted something that was making her feel uncomfortable, if the fact she was squirming was anything to go on.

"Oh no. This is bad. They're back. They're back."

"What in the name of Inferno are you…" questioned the teenage Umbra Witch before trailing off as she turned her attention in the direction the young girl was looking and spotted what the young girl was apparently seeing as well. A group of twelve beings, consisting of six Demons of the species known as Hideous and six Angels of the species known as Affinity, though due to the fact that they were on the other side of the Veil between the Human World and Purgatorio it looked as if someone had turned up the opacity of the Angels and Demons by roughly 80%, give or take a few percent. "Hey, kid?"

"Yeah?"

"You're seeing those things too, right?"

"Yup. Always been able to, nobody else seemed to notice them."

"Uh huh. Anything else you noticed about them?"

"When they're not fighting each other, they won't leave me alone."

"I see." Replied Viola as she turned her attention towards the group of mean kids. "Oi! Dimwits! Scram!" The fat one looked like he was about to argue, but a Bull Kiss flying past and narrowly missing his head promptly shut him up. "I won't say it again. Scram!"

"What about me?"

"These guys are very unlikely to willingly leave the two of us alone, for various reasons. Might as well take care of them. Since I'll be the one to deal with your stalkers, I should probably know your name."

"Good point. The name's Heather. Heather Potter."

"Viola. Viola Bayonetta-Redgrave." Replied Viola to the girl, now known as Heather Potter, before making a magic circle in front of the two, creating an entryway through The Veil Between Worlds into Purgatorio. For only a brief moment of hesitation, Heather followed Viola through the entryway through The Veil Between Worlds into Purgatorio.
