Suddenly, a man in a gray robe stepped from around a bookshelf in front of them shouting and gesturing at them.
"Wizard!" Shouted Rhona, as she pointed her pistol at the gray-clad man and fired a shot.
BOOM!
Chapter 2: Battle in the Citadel
"So much for being stealthy," mused the Flame Princess.
"I think he was asking what we are doing in here," observed Melissa.
Looking ahead they saw several more men in gray robes step into their aisle from the side aisles.
"Rhona, Kendra take the point," ordered the Flame Princess. "Etain and Melissa, you two cast from the second rank. Alice be ready to heal anyone that needs it and help Selena guard our rear. I'm going to try and sneak up behind them."
The red-headed leader stepped into a side aisle as the Party stepped into their battle formation. The Scottish woman, Rhona, tucked her already fired pistol into her belt and replaced it with one of her hand axes. Seeing the source of the loud sound, the men in gray robes walked towards the women, shouting at them.
Melissa cast a Web spell on the area where the men in gray robes were, while Etain cast Sleep on them. A matrix of webs appeared, ensnaring the men, who then fell asleep. Rhona attempted to shoot another one, but her pistol misfired. She'd have to clean it out later. Tucking it into her belt, she drew her other hand axe and prepared to fight whoever came in range. More men in gray robes stepped into the aisle from a side aisle as the Party advanced. These men appeared behind the webbed group. As the Party passed a side aisle, a young man in gray robes jumped out at Melissa and attempted to punch her in the stomach. But Melissa's 'Anywhere Out of this World' spell was still active and the only effect was to pull the gray-clad person into the extra dimensional space where the mage was storing the books they had taken.
Since the Webbed group formed a barrier, the Party was safe for the moment from the gray wizards, who appeared to have used up their spells for the day. . . . unless they started risky casting. Still, Rhona took the opportunity to use her axe to hack one of the sleeping gray wizards free so she could search the body. Beyond the Webbed group, more of the gray wizards were shouting at them. The Flame Princess stepped out of a side aisle behind them and in a sneak attack, stabbed the rear-most one in the back of the neck with her rapier, killing him instantly. The sound of his falling, made the other's turn to look. Seeing their comrade dead on the floor, with a woman holding a bloody sword standing over him, made the others flee in multiple directions into the stacks of the vast library.
"Find anything?" Asked Kendra, as Rhona searched the sleeping form of the man she had freed from the Web.
"Nothin' worth keeping," groused Rhona. "Jus' a few coins."
Melissa, meanwhile, was casting Comprehend Languages, while Etain was removing the few clothes she had on and sticking them in Rhona's backpack. Once she had divested herself of everything, even clothing, Etain cast Robe of Ectoplasm, which made a blob of green slime appear covering her body and restoring her modesty. The slime was not stationary. It was in constant motion as it moved in response to her movements and even her breathing. But it had a similar effect to a cloth being held in front of her and a cloak on her back. Its' movements were similar to those of Selena's dress.
"They're calling for someone to summon guards," translated Melissa, as her spell revealed what the fleeing men in gray were screaming. "From what I can tell, I don't think they're wizards. I think they're librarians."
"We should probably look for a way out of here," observed the Flame Princess, after killing another one, the slowest moving one, and returning back to the Party.
Leaving the Webbed librarians, the rest of the Party re-grouped as they searched for a way out. It was a labyrinth of bookshelves. They could hear movements of armored men tramping around but it was hard to hear where it was coming from.
"They're surrounding us!" Cried the Flame Princess as she spotted an overhead view in one of the many mirrors whose purpose was to reflect sunlight into the library.
A group of armored men wielding swords of a medium length came up behind the Party, as more came from the front and a couple even stepped in from a side aisle. Selena and Alice turned to face the foes behind them, while the Flame Princess let Rhona and Kendra move to the front and she moved to the center to help their Magi. Selena swung her broadsword at a guard but missed anything vital as his chainmail protected him and softened the effect of her blow to his shoulder. He stabbed with his arming sword and managed to nick her elbow. Alice swung her Mace at a guard and he easily deflected it with his shield. When he tried to retaliate, she dodged his attempt to stab her. When one of them came after Etain, her Robe of Ectoplasm exuded a pseudopod that both blocked and intercepted his sword, damaging it as the acidic nature of the ectoplasm burned the metal of the sword, while another pseudopod struck out at the guard, burning through his armor and into his heart, killing him on the spot. The Flame Princess, who was not used to fighting armored opponents, found her rapier to be near useless agains the chainmail of the guard. Rhona Swung her axes at a guard. He deflected one with his shield, but the other he caught in the face, at the same time he managed to stab the Scottish woman in the arm. She cried out and dropped the axe in that hand. Realizing that her rapier was not the proper weapon for fighting armored men, Kendra sheathed hers and lunged forward to grapple her opponent. Catching him by surprise, she managed to knock him supine, with her on top of him.
The Flame Princess dove for the floor and grabbed the acid damaged arming sword from the fallen guard. Ending her roll on one knee, the stabbed an attacking guard in the groin under the skirt of his chainmail. At the same time, Etain had used her Ectoplasm to burn his face. Melissa cast an 'Army of One' spell on Kendra, who grabbed the sword from the fallen guard to stab the one she was on top of, then used it to stab the ankle of another approaching guard. He bent over in pain, giving Rhona an opening to cut his throat with her axe. At the other end of the Party, Alice again failed to make it past her opponent's shield. While Selena took a wound to the thigh before stabbing her opponent through the throat.
Etain dispatched Alice's opponent with her Ectoplasm and now all the opponents they could see were dead. But they could still hear more of them tramping around the vast library shouting to each other as they searched for the invading women.
"Let's get out of here!" Shouted the Flame Princess, as she moved back to the front of the group and led the charge. They wound through the shelves until they spotted a door, which Rhona and Kendra kicked open and the Party Fled into the street.
They found themselves in an unknown city. Above them stretched a vast tower that obviously contained the library. It was taller than any cathedral they had ever seen and was obviously held up by magic. Looking down the street, they could see one of those men in gray robes, talking to a group of men dressed in plate mail and mounted on horses. The man in the gray robe was pointing at them as he shouted at the knights.
"Oh shit!" Said Melissa, who could understand via spell what they were saying. "They're going to attack us!"
Sure enough, the knights put on their helmets, lowered their visors and and charged with their lances pointed at the women.
While the Knights were preparing, Alice set the fork rest of her Musket on the ground, lit the fuse and took careful aim, Melissa and the Flame Princess aimed their pistols, and the rest of them prepared to strike at the charging knight with their melee' weapons.
The Knights charged and the women aimed . . .
Just before the knight's struck, the women fired:
BOOM!
Alice's Musket shot through the armor of a knight, Melissa killed another one, as did the flame princess. Etain flung a blob of acidic ectoplasm at the face of a knight, who fell off his horse screaming. Kendra dodged and killed both the Knights that attacked her, using the arming sword she had gained in the library. Selena was pierced by the lance of the knight under her armpit. But she had time to decapitate the knight who killed her. Rhona was skewered through the chest. But the sound of the firearms was completely unfamiliar to the people of Westeros. The surviving knights fled.
"Kendra, gather up their horses," ordered the Flame Princess. "Etain, see if you can revive them."
"Everyone get clear of Rhona," ordered Etain, before casting 'Electric Grave.'
A purple lightning bolt came down from the sky, striking the Scottish Fighter woman.
When Rhona stood up, her eyes gave off a blue glow. She growled menacingly as she pointed her axe at the Flame Princess. A blue lightning bolt shot out of her axe, which the Flame Princess dodged and then ran her Scottish twin through with her rapier.
"Try again, with Selena," ordered the Flame Princess, as she began looting Rhona's body, tossing anything of value into the extra dimensional space that Melissa was the gateway to.
Although Selena was obviously dead, she was still standing, held up by the dress which was animating he body. Etain cast 'Electric Grave' again, and the purple lightning bolt struck Selena. This produced no effect on the dead Asian woman, but the dress seemed angered by the spell. It took its' self off of Selena's corpse and moved towards Etain. A slight chemical burn dissuaded the dress from putting itself on the woman wearing acid ectoplasm. So, instead, it pounced on Melissa and forced her to wear it.
"Great! Now I get to look ridiculous!" Said Melissa, as she glanced at the dress that had put itself on her.
"Let's get out of here!" Ordered the Flame Princess, as she mounted one of the knight's horses.
The others mounted up to, with Etain having to move her Robe of Ectoplasm up so it only covered her top half and wouldn't burn the horse. The rode out of the city, making it out the gates just before they were closed behind them. When they got far enough away from the city, they could look back to see the fire burning at the top of the High Tower, which also doubled as a lighthouse and fortress. In order to evade pursuers, they left the road and rode cross country.
Note: The Default game world for LotFP is 17th century Earth, in the Early Modern era when armor was on the way out and matchlock guns were common.
