Chapter 5
The brothers were packing their bags deciding to leave after taking care of the monster in the lake. Their father taught them to not hang around a town once the job was done. They were dressed in dark clothes and looking over the plan they had compiled to kill the Apotamkin. It was five-thirty when a knock sounded at their motel room door and Dean when to answer it. He had his gun in his hand as he cracked the door and put it away before opening it to let the sheriff into the room.
"Sheriff," Dean grunted giving him a once over approving of his attire. The sheriff was dressed in camo pants and shirt, with combat boots and a hat. He was carrying a long gun case that had a sniper rifle in it.
"Gentlemen, am I too early?" Sheriff Savage asked.
"No, it's fine; we can go over the plan and get your thoughts."
"Well, I'm not an expert with your type of prey, but I'll give it a look," the sheriff replied sitting his gun case down and following Dean to the table where papers were spread out.
"Hello Sheriff," Sam greeted him as he loaded an extra clip for his gun with silver bullets.
They were going to play it safe and hit the Apotamkin with everything they had. Dean had fixed an arrow for the crossbow that had an iron tip and wooden body. Three other arrows had explosive charges on the tips that would hopefully blow the monster to pieces. He was pulling out the big guns and had loaded a .357 Magnum with hollow point bullets that made a small wound going in but came out like an explosion. He had also purchased some phosphorus flares that would burn underwater as the last weapon to use.
"We've got blood for bait and a dummy dressed like a kid to make it more realistic," Dean explained.
"Where did you get blood?" Savage asked warily.
"Us," Dean shrugged. "We both donated a little. We shouldn't need much if this thing is as hungry as Sammy thinks."
"Alright, just checking," Savage replied wondering if this was a common occurrence for these guys. It seemed there was more to them than he thought. It still amazed him at how they took command, not even blinking an eye about the monster in the lake like it was an everyday thing for them. He decided once this was over, he was going to do his own research.
"Sammy found a place that has a small dock and some steel pillars that are cemented into the ground to use to restrain the bitch. If we can keep her still long enough for you blow her head away, we'll try to destroy the eggs she has inside of her. We can't let any of those things survive."
"I agree," Savage nodded. He leaned over and looked at the map that had an area circled away from any civilians. The place was isolated and there shouldn't be innocent people around to get hurt. He looked over the written plans and compared them to the map trying to see if there were any problems with it. Savage played it out in his head twice before looking up at the brothers who were watching him with curious eyes. "I want to check the site that you want me to shoot from to be sure it's the best spot."
"Absolutely," Dean agreed. "If you don't like the spot, find one that better suits your needs. It's fine with us, you're the sniper."
"I have everything packed and ready to go Dean," Sam spoke up as he closed his pack and stored his laptop.
"You guys aren't hanging around after we take care of the Apotamkin?"
"Nope, we'll be heading out, no need to stay. There are more possible cases to check out and monsters to put down."
"What if I have questions about…I don't know…Maybe another case?"
"Here, this is our cell numbers," Dean told the sheriff holding out a card. "You can call for our help anytime. If we can't get here, there are others that can come."
"Good to know." The sheriff stowed the card in a pocket for future reference.
"Alright, let's rock and roll," Dean announced grabbing packs and heading for the door. The others followed and he decided the sheriff should drive his car so they could leave afterwards.
Sam gave directions to the area he determined would be the best place to lure the Apotamkin to them for the ambush. They found a place to leave the vehicles and got out to gather everything needed. The two hunters and sheriff made their way along the water's edge until they came to the small dock and stopped.
"Sheriff, you check out the spot we picked and if it's not suitable, scout the area and find one that does work. Sammy and I are going to get the trap set up. It'll be sunset soon," Dean instructed looking toward the sinking sun. "C'mon Sammy."
The brothers moved to the dock and laid everything down. Sam grabbed the dummy and Dean uncoiled the ropes to make a loop at one end of each rope. He watched Sam set the dummy at the end of the dock with the fake feet in the water. He positioned the bag of blood where it would slowly drip into the water once they were ready. He used a bungee cord to hold the child dummy in place and then helped Dean to position the loops of rope out into the water in front of the dock and dummy.
They used poles to push the rope out and made sure the loops were going to stay open and in place before carefully feeding the ropes back to shore and used a rock to hold it in place at the steel pillars. The plan was to let the blood slowly drip into the water to draw the Apotamkin to them. As the creature's body rose from the water, it would be in the loops and the brothers would tighten the rope around the body and tie it to the steel pillars trapping the Apotamkin so Savage could get a head shot and they could get body shots. If it worked, the Apotamkin would be destroyed, and they would let the dead body sink back into the lake to get rid of any evidence of it.
"Move your rope out more," Dean told Sam as he used his pole to hold his loop in place, making sure it was going to stay.
"Got it," Sam replied stretching out across the water being careful not to fall in.
Once Dean was satisfied that the ropes were in the best position, he stood back and let his eyes roam over the area, looking for anything that might hamper the trap from working.
"I found a good spot a little way below where you picked," Sheriff Savage told them as he walked back to the water's edge. He looked out across the water, cocking his head to he studied it.
"We'll start the blood drip in about thirty minutes," Dean told them after looking at his watch. "Let's get our pads set up Sammy and double check the weapons."
"Okay," Sam nodded knowing how picky Dean was. He shook out a blanket and laid it in the grass near one of the steel pillars so he could lay flat on his stomach and not be seen by the Apotamkin. Sam laid his gun on the blanket and then a flare gun loaded with flares that would burn under water. They had located the strongest flares on the market and hoped fire would help kill the monster. He had several more lying beside him to reload the gun. He slipped on lightweight leather gloves for protection from rope burn when they sprung the trap.
Dean took another blanket and positioned it near the other pillar and where he could see the trap in the water. He put his handgun at the head of the blanket and loaded his crossbow with one of the explosive arrows and put the other two within easy reach to reload the crossbow. He hoped when Savage took his head shot it would disable the monster allowing them to destroy the eggs inside of her.
Savage took a blanket and climbed the hill behind them to set up his nest and get the sniper rifle ready so he could do his part. He checked for stones and twigs before spreading the blanket out and knelt to open the rifle case and remove the gun. Savage snapped the small legs down and laid on his stomach on the blanket bringing the stock to his shoulder and looking through the scope to the dock at the child dummy. He slowly raised the rifle to where he thought the Apotamkin would come out of the water and checked the distance, making a small adjustment.
Once that was done, he loaded a clip with 7.62X51 Nato HPBT (Hollow Point Boat Tail) bullets. He was using these for the maximum destruction they provided. Savage hoped to take most of the head off with the first shot but was prepared to unload the clip into the head to be sure that the monster was killed. The last thing he did was tie a white strip of cloth to a small limb so he would be able to check the wind speed. At the moment, it was calm, and the top of the lake was like a mirror.
Dean looked over his shoulder at the sinking sun seeing it was time and signaled to Sam first and then to Savage to get ready. He walked down to the dummy and poked a small hole in the bag of blood so it could begin to leak slowly into the water. He watched it for a few minutes to be sure the blood was drifting into the middle of the loops of rope. When he was satisfied, he walked off the dock and took his position on the blanket letting his gloved hand rest lightly on the rope. Now for the hard part, waiting.

The light from the sun was fading away as all eyes were glued on the water. Nothing seemed to be happening until a small splash sounded not far away. All three stiffened and prepared to spring the trap. Ripples spread slowly across the still water as movement of something that couldn't be seen came closer.
The Apotamkin rose out of the water about nine feet, it's reddish/brown, skin glistening in the last of the light. The body resembled that of a huge snake, like an anaconda but had long, pale arms extending from it. Long, flowing red hair hung around her face, draped over her shoulders, hanging down her chest, and she moved her sharp, clawed hands forward toward the child dummy. Her mouth opened revealing rows of sharp, vicious fangs that dripped salvia into the water. The brothers could hear a hissing sound coming from her open mouth.
"Now Sammy!" Dean yelled as he pulled the rope tight and quickly wrapped it around the steel pillar, pulling it as tight as he could. He slipped once in the mud and almost lost his footing before getting it back and tying the rope off.
Sam jerked the rope hard trapping the Apotamkin inside the loop and dug his heels in pulling it as tight as he could before wrapping it around the steel pillar and securing it. He grabbed the flare gun and waited for Dean and Savage to fire first. He winced from the high pitched angry screeching coming from the monster when it found itself trapped between the two ropes.
Savage stared in shock at the face of the Apotamkin through the scope on his rifle. He had never seen anything like it and quickly shook off the shock as he readied himself to take the head shot. He drew in a slow breath and waited until the head stopped thrashing and pulled the trigger. The shot echoed across the lake as the bullet traveled from the barrel, through the air, and into the head, blowing part of it away.
Dean heard the shot and aimed the crossbow at the chest of the Apotamkin. He pulled the trigger and before the arrow struck the chest, he had another one loaded and aimed lower for the main body as the monster thrashed and screeched, before it was suddenly cut off when the bullet hit its mark. He fired the next arrow into the abdomen, pleased that it buried deep into the soft flesh before it exploded throwing guts, blood, bone, and pieces of broken eggshells outward into the air and onto the surface of the water.
Savage fired two more times at what remained of the head, watching it explode until there was nothing left. He stood up and watched as the brothers continued to fire upon the Apotamkin. Part of it caught fire from the flares Sam had shot. When he ran out of flares, Sam grabbed his gun and emptied it into what was left of the body, stepping toward the water as his anger flared and all he wanted was for the monster to die. He heaved heavy gasps as the adrenaline pumped through his body.
As the noises died away, the three men watched what was left of the Apotamkin slowly begin to sink into the water out of sight. Most of the body had been either blown to pieces or burned brightly, hissing and sputtering when it went into the water. The sun was gone now, making it hard to see. Sam and Dean pulled out torches and shone them into the water seeing only bits and pieces of the monster floating on the surface of the water.
Sheriff Savage stored his sniper rifle in its case and picked up the blanket to join the brothers at the water's edge. He saw and helped kill this monster, and still it was hard to believe any of it happened. He had help kill a monster to protect his town.
"Well, Sheriff," Dean finally spoke. "Welcome to the brotherhood."
"I don't envy you guys your jobs," Savage replied. "I can't imagine doing this on a regular basis."
"Someone has to," Sam shrugged.
"Okay, now that we've killed the monster, let's get out of here," Dean told them. "Sheriff, you wanna keep the dummy, just in case?"
Sheriff Savage looked over at him for a moment and then at the dummy before answering.
"Thanks, hopefully I won't be needing it again."
They gathered their things and made their way back to the cars and deposited everything in the trunks.
"Gentlemen, thank you for the help and if I run across anything else like this I will call," Sheriff Savage told them shaking their hands.
"You do that Sheriff," Dean told him. "Nice working with you and nice shooting."
"Take care Sheriff," Sam told him shaking his hand.
"You boys be careful out there. If you should need my help, you have my number."
"Will do Sheriff, take it easy."
The brother got into the Impala and slowly pulled away to head out of town and to their next hunt. They had made another friend and ally tonight.
