Love?

"Perhaps I was born to meet you."

Shinji's blue eyes widened in surprise, if not in shock. Kaworu was the last person he expected to say something like that, despite the albino boy's unusual kindness. Kindness, after all, was one thing. And what Kaworu has just said with a serene smile on his handsome face was clearly a lot more than a mere act of kindness. More so, it was something that Shinji couldn't quite define.

It was dangerously close to a love confession.

Shinji was about to start panicking.

Kaworu chose to ignore the boy's emotional state.

Shinji gulped, afraid to even look at his new friend – who was, for some unfathomable reason, obviously trying to turn their relationship into something much more intimate. Not that Shinji's so-called romantic morality and the idea of having a boyfriend didn't mix well enough – the young Ikari didn't have a morality to speak of due to lack of experience in love. Kaworu's words, however, scared him to no end.

Why exactly would a beautiful, intelligent, charmingly enigmatic young man act as if his existence and purpose in life depended on one miserable Ikari Shinji, not even the best student of his class?

"Is something wrong, Shinji-kun?" Kaworu questioned. Shinji hiccupped nervously and tried to hide behind a pillow. Much to his disappointment, it was too small. Kaworu cocked his head to one side and examined the shaking boy with seemingly innocent curiousity. "Are you alright?"

Shinji wasn't.

Kaworu shrugged. "Then how about we go to sleep?" he suggested. "Tomorrow's going to be a hard day, so we need to have a rest, don't you think so?"

Today was hard enough for me, Shinji thought. Attention of a mysterious angelic creature could almost be a burden for someone of Shinji's kind.

Because happiness, just like grief or fear, could easily make one's brain and heart explode.

And Shinji's heart was about to jump out of his chest.

"Kaworu-kun, I…"

"Yes?"

"…nothing."

Kaworu tried his best not to grin.
