The main pairing in this story is Dawn's Piplup x Ash's Oshawott. I am not changing any genders, so that means MxM. Fair warning to those who don't like it. Other pairings are Pikachu x Buneary (not a fan, but it works well here) and Ash x Dawn. There may be future pairings.
Onto the story!

Piplup POV:
"Look Piplup, I wonder if that's the plane they're on" Dawn said excitedly.
"Piplup! (I bet it is!)"
I stared out from the balcony railing with my trainer Dawn next to me, watching the beautiful view in front of us. The ocean sparkled in the sunlight, waves leisurely rolled across the surface. There was a calm, soothing breeze carrying the pleasant smell of seawater. The plane we saw was almost out of view now, having nearly finished its trip.
It was very nice of Cynthia to let us stay at her vacation home. I could tell she was a kind and generous person, which was unusual given she was the reining Sinnoh champion. Usually regional champions had extreme egos in need of constant feeding. I had heard tales of the Unova champion, this guy named Alder. Apparently, he had a reputation with the ladies that could give Brock a run for his money.
I knew Dawn was excited, it had been quite a while since she had seen Ash. It was obvious that part of this was from the crush she still had on him. She claimed to have hid it well, but I think it was Ash's obliviousness that made it seem that way.
I jumped off the railing, turned and headed back inside while Dawn stayed watching the ocean and clouds. I hopped up onto a couch, leaned back, took a few deep breaths and closed my eyes. I felt sleep taking me into its soft, warm wings. Unfortunately, I felt a sudden weight next to me on the couch, averting my nap. None too pleased, I cracked an eye open and saw Buneary had jumped up next to me. The look on her face said it all; she was about to ramble on about Pikachu once again. I sighed and sat up, just to be polite. 'Great, here she goes again. Thank Arceus this will soon be over.'
As you could have guessed, Buneary was ecstatic that she would see Pikachu again soon. It had only been a week after Dawn and Ash had split ways when she started to complain about missing him to anyone and everyone. Her giddiness about seeing Pikachu again had gotten so frequent it was becoming annoying. Thank Arceus the time until then was short, then she'd shut up and give us all, especially me, some peace and quiet.
"Piplup, we're finally going to see them again! I'm finally going to see Pikachu again!" She squealed loudly. She started happily bouncing up and down on the couch, causing me to sigh. So much for my nap. Then she let out a squeal so high-pitched my ears started ringing. Instinctively, I covered my ears with my flippers, trying to block out the offending sound. Her squeal had also caught the attention of Dawn, who ran with extreme speed into the room.
"Buneary, what is it? Are you ok?" Dawn asked, slightly panting.
"Bun bun! (I just can't wait until they arrive!)" she exclaimed, still bouncing with excitement.
"I know Buneary, I'm excited too. But please don't scream like that, I thought you were hurt!" Dawn scolded her.
"Eary… (Sorry...)" She stared at the floor, looking ashamed.
With that finished, I watched Dawn walk out of the room, leaving me and Buneary alone. I turned to Buneary and glared at her. "That was so loud and completely unnecessary! It's just Pikachu you're gonna see again. I'm excited too, but you're making way too big a deal out of this!" Buneary then glared right back at me.
"That's because I love him and can't wait to be with him again! You'd understand if you ever loved anyone, you grouchy penguin. And Dawn doesn't count!" She said, cutting me off before I could say just that. "I'm talking about romantic love, your other half. Not just friendship love." I was about to argue back, but then I realized something she said.
"Wait a second. You're saying Pikachu loves you back? Since when? I've never seen any sign of that. He usually ignores all your flirting or whatever you do." I rolled my eyes. However, I wasn't expecting the grin she gave me.
"As a matter of fact, he does, and we are together. He just doesn't display affection publicly, nor does he openly share his personal relationships. Pikachu is my other half and my lover. And you won't understand any of this until you have a lover of your own!" With that, she hopped off the couch and left through the same door Dawn did.
"Good riddance" I muttered under my breath, shaking my head and lying down again. I closed my eyes and thought about what she said. 'Other half my fluffy rear end! I have no other half, I am whole and awesome myself!'
I was interested who was now on Ash's team besides Pikachu. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't about love or that Trubbish about 'finding my other half'. I just wanted to see who I could beat up in battle to reaffirm my place as the best battler on the team. Heh, I probably could beat everyone but Pikachu, stupid electricity.
Well, Buneary did make one thing very clear: This was going to be a very interesting reunion.
