The car ride home was very quiet for Special Agents Caitlyn Todd and Anthony DiNozzo. Kate was driving with Tony riding shotgun. He hadn't spoken to her at all since he got out of the car he stole from Lane Danielson. He had just handed the gun he used to kill Jeffrey White over to Gibbs, and then go into Gibbs' car, waiting to leave. Kate had just looked at him, and thanked God he was all right.
Gibbs had driven back to NCIS – no one said a word. When they got to the large building, Tony had gone to the bathroom to wash his hands, and then he and Kate went home. Gibbs went to fill Abby and McGee in.
When Kate and Tony reached their apartment building, Tony got out of the car as soon as it parked, slamming the door behind him. Kate sighed. She wished he would open up to her or at least share what he was feeling.
Kate followed Tony up to the apartment the couple had shared for three months , after they had started dating six months ago. She came in to find Tony already on the couch. No lights were on, no TV, no stereo – it was just a man sitting in a dark apartment.
A man that Kate Todd loved more than life itself.
She didn't know what to do or what to say. This was the first time in their relationship she was afraid of Tony.
Of. That was a pretty strong word. Kate wasn't sure if she was scared of Tony, or for him. She just stood in the doorway, watching him. He didn't move.
Finally, after what seemed life forever, she walked over to the couch, and saw the tears sliding down her boyfriend's face.
For him, she decided, definitely for him.
Kate went and sat next to Tony, opening her arms for him. Tony didn't say a word as he fell into her arms and cried. Pretty soon, Kate was crying too.
And, as the two lovers sat there consoling the other, Tony was saying a silent prayer for Jeffrey, while Kate was saying a silent prayer for Tony.
