Prologue
It is an elders' duty to uphold Nightworld law. Humans are not to know of our existence. We are better than them, stronger,
faster, and of course smarter. Humans are dumb beasts, made solely for our consumption and we are not to love them.
It's all a load of rubbish.
I can say that with immunity because I am an elder, the first of the made vampires, and no one dare challenge me. Fine, I can say that with immunity because I say it quietly, where this is no one to hear. In my most private of thoughts, I know that we vampires, that we Nightpeople, are not better than humans.
It's true that they are physically weaker than us - that they die far too easily under our grasp. This is a lesson I have learned far more times than I cared to.
And every time I think it can be different, yet it never is. Yes, you have guessed right. I, Thierry Descouedres, elder and lord of the Nightworld, sworn upholder of its laws have fallen in love with a human. And not just once, but countless times.
That sounds worse than it is. Truly, there is only one I have loved – she is Hana of Three Rivers but her soul has come back in different bodies, and every time that I could find her I have loved her. It would be rather hard not to, as my soul is intimately fused with hers.
You think me romantic, a foolish dreamer, but I speak the truth. You wonder how someone such as I could become a member of one of the most brutal councils ever to exist. Well, I'll tell you. I am Thierry Descouedres, and this is my story. . .
