Chapter One: Caught by Surprise
Out of all the people in the world, Amy Madden was the last person Hartley expected to connect with. Amy was a supervillain, for God sakes! She was evil, cruel and didn't care about anyone but herself. Or at least, that was what Hartley had thought in the beginning. Sure, Amy was scary, but she also had a big heart. Amy cared about Hartley to a great extent, though it had taken her a while to admit it. The more time they spent together, the easier it was for them to get used to each other. To need each other. On a particularly bad day, Hartley had run to Amy of all people and vented to her. The villainess responded by getting up, making a bowl of popcorn and the two snuggled tightly under a blanket and watched the worst Rom-Coms they could find. A terrible day had turned into Hartley's most amazing one yet. Amy was the type of person who spoke through actions, not words and Hartley could accept that.
There was one new "action" that Hartley couldn't seem to wrap her head around. It happened for the first time at school yesterday. The two girls were chatting in the hallway when the warning bell rang. The word "goodbye" was on the tip of Hartley's tongue when suddenly Amy leaned in and kissed her. Then she waved and trudged off to her own class, acting as if nothing had happened. Everyone had seen it, too.
Now, the two of them were alone once again, except it was lunch period. Amy was rambling on about something or other, but all Hartley could think about was that kiss. The way Amy's surprisingly soft lips had crashed against her own. It wasn't anything intense or disgusting to look at. Amy had just pecked her on the lips and that was that. Then, there was that strange feeling in Hartley's gut and her yearning for Amy to kiss her again. The bell rang and Amy leaned forward, cupping Hartley's cheek this time and kissed her again.
Did Amy like her that way?
Was this some weird way to get back at her? Either way, Hartley found herself slowly responding to the kiss just as Amy pulled back. Then, Amy had to double down and wrap her in a hug. An affectionate Amy was definitely not something Hartley was used to, but she kind of liked it. The kissing thing, though? That was just… What was that even about? What did it mean?
A pair of fingers snapped in front of Hartley's face, bringing her out of her thoughts. Amy tilted her head to the side and stuck out her lower lip, "You okay?" Amy asked, those gorgeous brown eyes of hers swirling with concern. Hartley let out a dreamy sigh and found herself lost for words. Has Amy always been this beautiful?
"Uh… Yeah, I'm fine." Hartley assured, her eyes flickering down to Amy's lips briefly. The brunette didn't seem to believe this. Still, she patted Hartley quickly on the cheek then leaned forward and kissed her once more. "I just wanted to say bye." She confessed before walking out of the cafeteria. Hartley wobbled on her feet, nearly swooning from her friend's kiss. It was the best kiss in the world. The only kiss Hartley had ever had.
Wait…
Omigod! Amy had stolen Hartley's first kiss! What was she supposed to do now? Was she supposed to be angry? Disappointed? If so, Hartley felt none of those things! The fact stood was that Amy was an amazing kisser and Hartley liked it. She liked it so much that it was frightening.
The late bell rang.
Hartley looked up, realizing she was still standing alone in the cafeteria.
Oh, that's something she was supposed to be doing! Being in class, on time, like she always was! Adjusting her backpack strap, Hartley used the newfound motivation and ran to class. For once, all thoughts of Amy flew out the window.
