To Romance a Kanker

Ch.6: Requiem for Good Rest

I looked over at my alarm clock. It was one in the morning. Groaning, I turned and laid on my back. I could not sleep. Oh yes, I could feel the tired of my body, but my eyes refused to rest.

Honestly, with what happened next, I realize now it was for a purpose.

"AHHHHHHHHHH!"

Hearing this, I immediately got up and slipped on my sandals. Taking care not to be too loud. I made my way across the street. It was Eddy that had yelled.

Not caring that I was in my NASCAR pajamas, I crossed over to see Double D entering the house. Kevin was right after him. He turned his head, hearing footsteps.

"Nazz?" he asked for a moment, before seeing me with his sleepy eyes. He allowed a chuckle. "Oh, hey man. Heard Eddy scream too?"

I nodded, thanking Kevin as he kept the door open for me. Walking in bore witness to the living room, where Eddy was sitting on the couch, Double D rubbing his back gently. In the kitchen, his father Thomas was making some hot chocolate, having awoken his son from his nightmare.

Eddy looked up, drying some tears on his face. It expressed an unsaid thank you to Kevin and me as Thomas stepped in.

"Here you go son... oh! Hello Kevin. And you have to be David" he said matter of factly to me. "Just, try not to be loud Eddy" he said. Eddy nodded as his father, who was a tall fellow, returned to his bedroom.

Eddy took a sip of the drink and closed his eyes. "It happened again, Kevin."

Kevin looked unhappy. "This is the fifth time this month."

"Not to be unexpected with the trauma our friend has endured" Double D said quietly. He stood. "In the morning, I will bring you over some Indica." Eddy allowed a chuckle, as I chuckled too. I knew the strain well.

Double D left then, having a doctor's appointment early in the morning. Kevin sat next to Eddy, and I remained standing, too worried to relax.

Eddy looked up again. "Really, it's okay David."

I shook my head firmly. "No, it's not. Eddy, I've been through a lot too. Maybe I'm reaching in too much, but do you need someone to vent to?"

Now, let me say that this was not a knock-on Kevin. Kevin had been a great friend to Eddy over the past year. Kevin was simply not one for the kind of heart-to-heart Eddy needed.

Kevin stood, rubbing his eyes. "Stop by tomorrow, Eddy. We'll play some ball."

Eddy accepted the deal, looking to the kitchen.

"You want some hot chocolate too, before I unload on ya, David?"
