Cora looked down at her phone, Robert was calling her. She looked up at the room again, everybody was waiting for her to start the presentation. She put her phone back in her pocket and started. She got a little annoyed, Robert knew she was giving this presentation now.
She started her presentation when the door opened, the receptionist was trying to get her attention. Cora signalled she should come closer.
"There is a phone call for you Milady. It is your husband" she said.
Cora's heart started racing. Her hands were shaking when she brought the phone to her ear.
She sunk onto a chair, her hands folded in her lap, staring at the wall. Isobel stepped closer and put her hand on Cora's shoulder. "Are you alright my dear?"
Isobel was a far-removed aunt of Robert. She was a board member of the hospital. It took Cora some time to win her over, and she was still hostile against Cora.
Cora felt tears stinging behind her eyes, she bit her lip trying not to cry. She should not cry in front of Isobel; she would see this as weakness. She looked up at Isobel. "Marmaduke has died."
Isobel let out a soft "oh" and sat down next to Cora. "You need to go home right now."
"But this presentation, we worked so hard for it, and we need the money."
"Everybody will understand why you are leaving. Do you think you can drive?"
Cora nodded. "I will manage."
Robert walked into Marmaduke's room, Rosamund was sitting at his side, whispering to him. Robert put his hands on her shoulders and tried to get her to stand up.
"Rosamund, you need to eat something. It has been hours."
Rosamund shook his hand of her shoulders. "I am not leaving him, not yet. I cannot."
Robert kneeled next to his sister; it was hard to see her in this distress. She had loved Marmaduke with all her heart and even more. He was the love of her life and taken to early. He did not know what to say to her.
Rosamund stared at Marmaduke.
Robert walked out of the room and was walking into his mother.
"How is she doing?" She asked.
"Not well, she does not want to eat. She wants to stay with him." Robert frowned.
"I will try." Violet sad softly and closed the door behind her.
Robert sank on one of the chairs, he put his head in his hands. Why did this happen, what did Marmaduke do wrong? They did not deserve this. They should be together for the rest of their lives, raising children. How could his sister be a widow already. Suddenly he felt familiar hands on his shoulder. He looked up into the eyes of Cora.
Before he could get up, she was already down on her knees in front of him. She wrapped both arms around him and pulled Robert close. Her hands rubbing his back slowly. Robert felt he could finally cry. He had held his tears in, to be strong for Rosamund, but now he was in Cora's arms he could not be strong anymore. He heard Cora's soft voice sussing him and he managed to control his tears. He took a deep breath and leaned back a little. Cora's hand moved to his knees. She looked up at him. Her eyes were speaking, but not a sound came from her mouth. He found consolation in her eyes.
Robert put his hand on Cora's cheek. "Thank you for coming home directly."
"Darling, I am sorry I was in Downton. How are you doing, and how is Rosamund?"
"I don't know how I am doing. I don't think Rosamund understands what has happened to the full extend."
"Her heart is not ready to accept this loss." Cora said. "Is she with Marmaduke?"
"Mama is with her now." Robert said.
"Cora, I think Rosamund needs you." Violet's voice sounded.
Cora got up, brushed her finger over Robert's cheek and followed Violet. Violet did not say a word, she just opened the door to Marmaduke's room. Cora took in a shaky breath when she saw the still face of Marmaduke. He was laying there very peacefully. Rosamund was sitting next to his bed, with one of his hands in hers. Cora saw Rosamund's thumb stroking Marmaduke's hand.
"Hi." Cora said softly, trying not to scare Rosamund.
Rosamund looked up and when she saw Cora, the tears started flowing over her cheeks. Cora rushed closer and pulled her close. "You cry now, darling. Just cry." Was the only thing Cora said. She held Rosamund close to her body until she felt that Rosamund took in a deep breath. She pulled a chair close and sat down, Cora took Rosamund's hand in hers. "I am so incredibly sorry you have to go through this."
Rosamund nodded. "It is not fair. Why he? Why us? I cannot live without him. Oh Cora, I don't know what to do now."
"For now, you should come with me and try to eat something."
Rosamund shook her head. "I am not hungry."
"I know, darling, I know, but you need to eat something."
Reluctantly Rosamund got up and followed Cora out of the room. Cora saw Robert getting up, but she signalled he should stay put. She saw Violet was also sitting back down. She was happy they both understood. She guided Rosamund towards the cafeteria, put her down at a table and ordered a cheese sandwich and a cup of soup. She walked back to where Rosamund was sitting. "Here, try to eat this. You do not need to eat everything but try to eat something."
Rosamund at first was taking small bites, but before Cora realised it, Rosamund had finished the soup and sandwich.
"I guess I was hungry." Rosamund said and there was a little smile on her face.
"Good, now let's go home. You can sleep at our place."
"No, no I want to be in my own home. Marmaduke's and mine."
"Do you want me to stay with you?" Cora asked.
"Would you do that?" Rosamund looked up with pleading eyes.
Cora reached over the table and took her hands. "Of course, I would do that, I am here for you always." She saw Rosamund bite her lip. Quickly she got up, took Rosamund's hand in hers and walked back to where Robert and Violet were sitting. "We are ready to go home." She announced.
Violet stepped towards Rosamund and Cora discreetly stepped back. She did not listen in.
Robert took her hand. "Darling." Cora said. "I will sleep at Rosamund tonight, is that alright?"
Robert looked at Cora with so much love in his eyes. "You are an incredible woman, thank you for doing this." He kissed her cheek.
The service was lovely and very well attended. Rosamund had been strong and said some beautiful words. Once all the guests had left, she turned towards Cora and Robert. She took Cora's hands in hers.
"Thank you for all you have done the last days. I don't know how to thank you."
Cora saw tears in Rosamund's eyes. She squeezed Rosamund's hands. "There is no need to thank me. Do you promise you call when you need something? Even if it is in the middle of the night and you just want to talk."
Rosamund nodded. "I promise."
