Setting:
Bree-Land. Deep in the heart of the Old Forest. On the Withywindle River where a great willow tree is rooted…(Old man Willow) Who despises mortals for their assaults on the living forest, and uses his dominion over the trees to ensnare anyone foolish enough to enter this ancient remnant of a vast, forgotten wood.
Withywindle river centre left of stage. A path crosses alongside of it coming from the upper right of the stage.
Frodo and 3 other hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam enter along path from upper right. Sam is pulling a pony (Bill) laden with luggage. Frodo carries a walking stick. Each hobbit carries a pack.
FRODO : (stopping) Allright everyone. We shall stop here to have a bite and a drink, and a rest before we move on.
Grateful the other hobbits lay their packs on the forest floor and also free Bill the pony of his burden as well. The hobbits sit on the forest floor and open up their packs to have their lunch.
SAM: (through a mouthful of apple) When do you reckon we will reach Crickhollow Mr. Frodo?
FRODO: (stands up and stretches) Well I hope not long. I have never walked this far before. What do you reckon Merry?
Merry: (feeling important sits up strait) oh, we should be there by tomorrow night if we are lucky.
PIPPIN: (standing and walking to the willow tree.) Well if we still have a lot of walking to do, I think I shall take a nap before we move on again.
MERRY: (joining him) I think I will too.
The two hobbits each sit between the tree's great roots. Comfortable they quickly fell asleep.
FRODO: (moving to the back of the tree to get a drink from the river and soak his feet.) You can sleep to Sam. I'm not tired, I think I shall soak my feet a bit and have a drink.
(FRODO sits on the roots of the tree dipping his feet in the water.)
SAM: That's ok Mr. Frodo I think I'll just have a look around. I won't be far. Just call if you need me.
(SAM exits down left of stage.)
(FRODO hums to himself. Presently with his back against the tree he falls asleep. He thought just as he drifts off he could her the willow sing to him.)
The willow tree suddenly seems to be alive. Its roots begin to move. And Merry and Pippin are drawn into a crack, which opens nearby into the tree. FRODO is pushed into the water by the root he is sitting on, and held under. SAM hearing his cry re-enters down left.
SAM; (spotting Frodo runs to help. He can also hear MERRY and PIPPIN yelling from within the tree. Unable to help anyone he looks around anxiously. Presently he hears someone singing.
