She watched her little son playing on the laminate kitchen floor. He was humming again, totally engrossed in his drawing. She wished he wouldn't do that, he was becoming an Individual. His humming got louder and for her it was time to stop him.
"Leo! Stop it!" He looked up at her through innocent green eyes and gave her that cute little smile that made her heart melt.
"What Mamma? What should I stop?" She sighed, he hadn't noticed again.
"Don't hum, Leo. Daddy will be home in a minute you know how much he hates Music." Leo shook his head and stood up from the floor.
"Mamma! I have all this in my head, it just wants to come out and…" He stopped and looked down at the floor.
"And?"
"And I think it should!" He got a slap for that answer. Tears welt up in his eyes.
"Why can't you be like the others Leo? Why where you born different? You're going to be the death of me!" The tears were now flowing down his cheeks. The little body shook.
"I WISH I'D NEVER BEEN BORN AT ALL!" His mother tried to hug him but he pushed her away and ran, ran as fast as he could. He only stopped when he had reached the park. He sat down at the edge of the lake and watched the virtual ducks swim around.
"Hey loser! Who gave you the right to hang around here?" Leo looked up, three boys from his class were standing over him.
"Leave me alone."
"Oh is our ickle loser sad?"
"Just go okay?" The boys laughed hatefully. One of them shoved Leo so that he landed in the pond.
"What was it you called yourself? LOSER!" Leo spluttered, he wasn't going to tell them his name about his dream. One day, he wasn't going to be Leo anymore, he would be Galileo Figaro.
"I'm not telling you Gagas." One of the boys grinned and pulled him out of the water.
"They say you can sing loser. Go on then, sing for us."
"No. Why should I?"
"Cause you'll regret it otherwise. We'll make you feel so dirty you wont want to show your face in public again." Leo was scared. He couldn't sing, not in public, he knew what his mother had told him about that. But what would they do to him if he didn't. He opened his mouth,
Don't judge a thing till you know what's inside it
Don't push me- I'll fight it
Never gonna give in – never gonna give it up no!
If you can't catch a wave then you're never gonna ride it
You can't come in uninvited
Never gonna give in – never gonna give it up no
You can't take me I'm free
(A.N. From Brian Adams, I just liked it.)
"What are you boys doing there! It's illegal!" The others scampered, Leo wasn't fast enough. The policeman took him home. His father gave him a good beating.
"You'll regret the day you were born son! I'll make you regret it everyday of your life." Leo took it all. He decided to try and keep the words in his head secret. Sometimes they'd burst out but he knew how to run from his father if they did. He was too scared of the others, so if they talked to him, he'd stutter.
Some nights he'd lay awake and wonder if there were others like him. Other kids that didn't fit in, that got given a hard life. Sometimes he wanted to run away, but where should he go. The worst nights were those where he couldn't sleep because the songs wouldn't leave his head. He'd lie awake crying then, and wishing he'd never been born at all.
