Afternoon – Edge City Public Library

It was lunch time and Evelyn was sitting at her desk eating a sandwich a mug of coffee sat near her she ignored both her hunger and thirst and carried on reading the book that she had picked up.

From the book she learnt about Loki and his mask that would grant it's wearer anything beyond their wildest dreams in exchange for this the wearer would become a different person.

As Evelyn read more flashes of her past came into her mind she found herself back in Stanley's apartment her glasses were removed and had been placed on a Mask.

As she herself lifting the object to her face as she did the mask pulled itself onto her face transforming from a wooden surface to a sickly green wax like substance. She screamed but nothing came from her mouth.

Suddenly her whole body was enveloped into a small twister, and then she saw herself she was wearing a low cut red dress, her hair was long and tied into a ponytail. Her face was bright green.

Evelyn stopped reading as she closed the book had she worn the Mask? She stopped for moment breathing hard as she couldn't believe it. A thin smile appeared on her lips.

Did Stanley still have it and if so, did he wear it? She sat down at the desk looking over at the book a thin smile appeared on her lips as a thought came into her head.

"If Stanley does still have that Mask then I wouldn't think that for a moment that he won't mind if I wear it?" She then started laughing to herself as she remembered that she was seeing him later tonight.

However that thought soon came out of her mind as soon as she was nearly finished with her lunch the door to the staff room sung open. Evelyn quickly stood up placing her jacket over the book for standing over her was her manager Miss Robin.

"What are you doing here?!" The older woman shouted.

"Just finishing my lunch Miss!" Evelyn snapped in a quiet but sharp tone.

"Then get on finishing it did you know that you are working overtime tonight?!" The fat older woman snapped as she hurried out of the office.

Evelyn breathed hard as she hadn't seen the book. However she felt disappointed as working overtime meant that she wasn't going to see Stanley or she would be late. She then made up her mind.

"I'll phone him and tell him that I will be coming over later!" She said to herself as she grabbed hold of the book that lay underneath her jacket.

"Surely he won't mind that will he?" She asked herself as she walked out of the room and back towards the shelf back to her duties.

As she did this she smiled to herself thinking of all the questions that she would ask him in regards to the secret that he had kept from her during their first date some many days ago now.

That Night – Stanley Ipkiss' Apartment

It was late in the evening as Stanley sat down on a brown leather couch next to him sat Evelyn quietly drinking a mug of coffee they were sat together just watching TV as the credits to a cartoon that they had watched started to roll.

Something crept into Evelyn's mind a question that she had been begging to ask Stanley. She sat nearer to him pushing herself closer to him.

"Stanley," she said in a soft tone.

"Is it OK if we can talk, please?" Stanley turned his head towards her and looked deep into her dark brown eyes.

"Of course it is Evelyn what is it that you want to ask me?!" He asked as he gently started rubbing one of her bare legs with one of his hands. Evelyn smiled faintly at him.

"Stanley, please be honest with me what happened that night we first dated as I can't seem to remember much of it?!" She asked as she looked at him smiling faintly at him, for a moment Stanley could feel a lump appearing at the back of his throat.

The memory of Evelyn wearing The Mask started buzzing in his head as he thought this he asked him a question.

"Does she want to wear the Mask again?" He asked him as he turned to face her he gulped at the thought of her wearing the Mask.

"Why do you want to know that Evelyn?" He asked as he lifted a mug of coffee that had been placed on the side, he then held it to his lips and drank from it,

"Just interested, that's all!" She said as she smiled at him. Stanley put the mug down on the floor near his feet. He then was about to say something when the news flashed on.

"We interrupted your viewing to bring you a news report last week a female Mask was spotted at the Coco Bongo Club downtown!"

The news then flashed to an image of Stanley being dragged around the Coco Bongo nightclub by a familiar woman with a green head, Evelyn looked hard at herself.

"Was that her? She thought. She then turned to Stanley who turned the TV off not wanting to tell her what had really happened.

"Why was he doing this?" She thought as she gave him a hard look.

"Was he afraid of something?" She was about to say something to him when she heard something that sounded like swing Jazz music.

She stood up from where she was sitting and walked towards the wardrobe closet as if she was in a trance. She pulled the door open as she did this and the music stopped playing.

There standing in front of her as if it had been waiting was the Mask of Loki it's surface was brown and wooden lined with care and age.

Evelyn turned back to Stanley watching as he went over to the kitchen to make some popcorn. She then turned back to the Mask lifting it up with both of her hands to her face.

"What's the harm in wearing this thing?" She thought to herself as a thin smile appeared on her lips.

She then held it up to her face and as she did she could felt the power coming from the thing as she drew it nearer the mask lacked on to her face.

Evelyn could hear herself screaming but nothing came out as the mask changed from a brown rusted color to a sickly shade of dark green as it spread over her face like hot melted wax.
