Kai
It had happened so fast. In one moment, his comrade and friend was alive… In the next, a kunai had pierced his friend's chest. His friend shortly wobbled before collapsing to the ground. Kai, who was only eleven years old, screamed the name of his friend rushing to his side.
It had gone all down-hill then their Jonin instructor had decided to continue this mission even though it had turned out to be a B-ranked one. Originally it was only a C-ranked mission… a simple C-rank mission. Now they were facing an A-rank nukenin from Kumogakure.
His other friend, someone with long blond hair and blue eyes, hn-ed in annoyance and gritted his teeth. Their Jonin instructor wasn't going to do anything. The only thing she would do, would to interfere if Kai's life, and only his life, was in danger… because his father had been an ANBU. Or rather his step-father… Kai was adopted and he knew it ever since he had turned four.
Then the nukenin neared him, he froze in shock. His body refused to move. He was scared… he was so scared. He was going to die now.
His Jonin instructor, that bitch, finally moved and defended him. Meanwhile his other friend prepared a paper bomb throwing it at the nukenin. He ended up in an explosion killing him. Blood was flying everywhere. In his face, on his body… His eyes widened in total shock. He couldn't hinder himself from trembling and shaking.
Later that day Kai had excused himself in order to wash his body in a river. However, as soon as his face was clean, he just stared at his hands. They trembled and shook. He couldn't hide it. He wished that his hands would stop doing this movement.
Tears formed in his eyes… He hated this entire situation. He hated that this mission had turned so terribly. His eyes started twitching and burning. It was such an uncomfortable feeling. He rubbed his hand over them trying to soothe them. But to no avail… His eyes continued twitching and burning causing him to close them. Now his tears flowed down from his cheeks wetting them and leaving a salty taste in his mouth.
He opened his eyes again… Suddenly his entire environment was sharper, more focused. He could even see the smallest leaves on a tree nearby. Something had happened. Something totally unordinary had happened. This was not normal. He looked down to his trembling hands noticing that he saw something blue in his body.
Chakra, his mind whispered. He was somehow capable of seeing chakra. Wait… Seeing… Was this a dojutsu?
Kai decided to look at his reflection in a nearby river. And there it was… His eyes, originally black, had turned red with one tomoe in each eye. He had seen those eyes before as he had encountered someone who wielded them.
The Sharingan. He somehow had the Sharingan. And no, he hadn't received or stolen his eyes from an Uchiha… He had the Sharingan. The Kekkei Genkai of a clan which was massacred two weeks ago.
It could only mean one thing…
He was an Uchiha.
Fuma Kai, currently nineteen years old, mumbled something in his sleep. He wanted to continue to sleep then… Oh dear!
With a jolt Kai woke up in an upright position. Shortly, he wondered where he was and why he was wearing his light red shirt with a light brown vest over it. Only his right arm was covered in a red sleeve which reached to his wrist. The other arm showed his muscles and skin. Although he had barely muscle there. Wrapped around his neck was a yellow scarf. His grey pants reached just below his knees in dirty colored boots. This was just the look of any normal civilian in Iwagakure, except that he had added a personal touch to it with his boots. Normally civilians only wore shoes which reached just above their ankles… But he saw those boots during his trip near the border of the Land of Rain and immediately bought three pairs.
He remembered. He was at the best clinic in Iwagakure. He was a psychologist after he retired as a shinobi due to the death of his friend. He was actually the youngest psychologist in the Land of Earth… and also one of the best if not the best. If they only knew that he cheated with his Kekkei Genkai in order to figure out what was wrong with his patients.
Kai rubbed a hand over his short brown hair. While he had wanted it to keep it longer, it simply didn't look good on him. Besides, it was common believe in the Land of Earth that people who had short hair were more trustworthy. At least he had black eyes… like most villagers of Iwagakure. Life was hard in said village actually.
He blinked one time with his black but rather small eyes. He actually wore glasses although these were fake ones. Somehow, his face just didn't look good without them. The glasses themselves were black and thin-rimmed.
But that didn't mean Kai was unhappy. He led a quiet life in Iwagakure. Albeit quiet might be an understatement. The psychologist helped others getting over the trauma of the third and fourth Shinobi war. Many people lost dear friends to these two wars. Even if the last war wouldn't have happened, Kai would still be working as a psychologist. It interested him more than anything. Besides, his Kekkei Genkai was truly useful. However…
He kept it a secret that he could activate the Sharingan. First and foremost because if someone knew, word would spread and Uchiha Itachi would have eventually attacked and murdered him. Even his parents didn't know who he truly was and about his heritage.
There were days where he wished that he could tell them. But part of him was afraid of losing everything he loved. His parents, his reputation… his status. Still, he continued despite the dangers. He just couldn't help it.
Sometimes Kai wondered who his biological parents were. He sometimes imagined that they were powerful members of the Uchiha clan but they knew he was going to be a failure and gave him free to adoption. Or… he was just born out of an affair. He knew that some clans gave their children away because they weren't children of married couples. Some clans did that actually like the Hyuuga, Shimura or Bakuhatsu clan. Kai also guessed that the Uchiha clan did that much to his luck actually. Because of this he survived.
Kai took a drink from his oolong tea while leaning back into his chair in his office. Currently there were no patients to be treated or waiting. Still, he wished for a challenge. Something that would keep him entertained and not rot in this place. But he should be happy that he was alive. He shouldn't complain about his life. After all, he could be dead…
Which reminded him of his Infinite Tsukuyomi dream. In this dream he was living with his clan and real parents (who had no faces because he never saw them). But his adoptive parents constantly visited him and had a good relationship with his biological ones. Even in this dream, Kai hadn't been a good shinobi. But he would help his fellow clan members with psychological issues.
The psychologist shook his head. He shouldn't waste his time. He should maybe organize some documents. Because he didn't want to hire a secretary… he had to do all the paperwork. And that did not spare him from bureaucracy! Bureaucracy was the one word he hated. It was way too much time consuming. He could treat more patients if he wouldn't have to do bureaucracy. It was somewhat maddening.
Kai put his thumb, pointer and middle finger on the bridge of his nose pinching it slightly. He took a deep calming breath. Getting angry at things he couldn't change would bring him nothing. Instead he should focus of what he had… which was a mountain of papers…
Unwillingly, he thought about the Tsuchikage and his paperwork. That old man must be suffering from all the paperwork and his declining health. The Tsuchikage was, after all, an old man who had met Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara before on the battle field. Kai even wondered then the old man would retire… As stubborn as he was, however… He probably would die nearby his desk at his office.
Kai groaned. He should focus on paperwork already. The piles of paper won't go down and rather raise into the sky if he did nothing. With another groan he fished the very first paper and started to read. It was from one of the health insurances threatening him with a lawyer if he proceeded to support his patient's decision for a rather unconventional therapy. The health insurance didn't want to pay the treatment as they believed that it was too expensive or ineffective. Great… Kai was a psychologist! Not a lawyer! But he would advise his patient to get a lawyer.
He wrote on the paper "Advise: Lawyer" and put it into a special folder. Then he got the next paper. This time a patient expressed her gratitude for helping her discovering her PTSD and administrated a therapy for her. That poor soul had severe panic attacks and couldn't keep working as a ninja due to the events of the Third Shinobi War. While the last shinobi war had only concluded some months ago, for Kai it basically never happened. His patients almost never grew in number.
Kai fished the next paper. And this was then his eyes widened. This paper was written by Tsuchikage-sama He looked at the date and audibly gasped. It was already five months old. How could he oversee this? If Tsuchikage-sama wrote him then it must be something really important and he just hadn't taken a look at it!
He could kick himself in the head for this now! Skimming over the paper, he already knew that this was one big of an assignment. He should travel to Konohagakure and help several members of a secret ANBU organisation called the Ne to quote "gain their humanity back". That sounded like a challenge.
Grabbing the paper in his left hand, he rushed out of his office and into the main hall. Several people looked at him and were probably thinking if he went crazy after all. But he didn't. Instead he wished that the offer still stood. If that was the case then he would break out of this ordinary life.
Kai couldn't believe his luck. The assignment still stood. While Konoha got more psychologists, they were still searching! And this was the perfect opportunity. His career would jump into the sky if he managed to do great things. Not only that but his already good reputation would get even better.
However… There was one problem left. His motion sickness… no matter what he did, he always needed to throw up if he travelled by a cart or with a ship. During his first two years as a psychologist he was expected to travel through the entire Land of Earth. This was the first time he had learned about his motion sickness. Just the thought about travelling again… It dreaded him. And seeing the cart already made his stomach twist and knot in a very painful way.
"This is going to be long ride to Konoha…" Kai mused aloud.
He also gazed to the others who were accompanying him. An elderly woman, a rather young man (probably the driver), two kids with one parent and two shinobi. One from Iwagakure, the other one from Konohagakure. They were both male. He didn't know any of them, however.
"Alrighty!" the Konoha shinobi started having placed his hands on his hips. "Since we are going to travel for quite some time… Let us introduce each other, shall we?"
"Who makes you the leader?" the Iwa shinobi questioned him.
"Well… Someone needs to take action." he replied smirking. "Since this is a normal C rank mission… and also to strengthen the bond between Konoha and Iwa… Look… I know how it is… We fought each other in the Third Shinobi War… But, come on! Let us settle this aside and do our best to fulfil this mission!"
He gave a thumb up. Kai narrowed his eyes at him. He wasn't dressed like a normal Konoha shinobi would. Instead he wore a white top with long sleeves. Most of his chest could be seen but his stomach was covered in white bandages. On his chest and face he had several scars. Either this shinobi threw himself between several kunais and somehow managed to survive… or he was incredibly clumsy. Neither of those assumptions sat well with him.
Anyway, this shinobi wore black gloves over his hands and a green obi wrapped right above his hips. He also had a brown belt around his hips. Hanging from it was a black sheath with a short sword. Kai knew this kind of sword as it was usually used by members of the ANBU of Konoha. So this man was an ANBU?
Mustering his face brought Kai to two conclusions. First, his eyes were black and didn't held much emotions. They were a stark contrast to how this man's lips were smiling constantly. And second, he seemed somewhat familiar. Maybe he was a war hero? Hm… No. He would have remembered those black eyes.
As the eyes of the Konoha ninja locked to his, he avoided his gaze and focused on his other traveling companions. They seemed normal but looks can be deceiving. He had learned this as a shinobi as well as a psychologist. The only person he was going to trust was the Iwa shinobi because they called Iwagakure their home.
"So… Let us finally introduce together. I'm Tsuki Yuma, a shinobi of Konohagakure." the man with the black eyes introduced himself.
And so, started the introduction round. The children of their group were very excited about the ninjas and got easily into a conversation of that Yuma-san. With dread in his stomach, Kai finally entered the carriage. He knew that he was going to throw up within the next hour.
Author's note:
Originally Kai's family name was Ruitomo. But then I read through an article about the Uchiha clan I noticed that they were distantly related to a Fuma clan. And I thought… Fuck. Okay, Fuma is his family name now.
Bakuhatsu: means translated Explosion. It is just a clan I created actually. However, if you know who is associated with explosions you might know at least a member of the clan. If said member originated from a clan is unknown. But I like to think that he is.
Well, then… Because I'm a sucker for theme songs for each character, I want to give Kai one as well. After searching a lot for a fitting theme, I found "Chester – Secret Intense Training" from Tales of Phantasia: The Animation. Just give this soundtrack a shot… It's quite fitting actually as it symbolized Kai's calmness.
Somehow, his face just didn't look good without them (glasses). Just… The truth is that I created his artwork (btw. Here is the link for his artwork: type pinterest .com and then add /pin/641833384414163362/) and he doesn't look good without glasses. Seriously, I tried several times to actually draw him without glasses. But every time something was missing and his face looked weird. His face just screamed at me wanting to have glasses drawn on them. I only figured it out recently because I got glasses myself due to my declining eye sight then I look into the distance.
Also, here is the link for the cover: again type pinterest and then add /pin/641833384414163357/
