Reflections on Being Mutant
By LT Magnus
Shalimar lay in her bed still awake in the middle of the night as thoughts raced through her mind one after another seemingly endless. She tried to pick them apart from each other as questions and wonders popped themselves suddenly into her consciousness. Lately she and the team had been doing mission after mission it seemed. It had been a while since she'd had any real fun. Not that she didn't find kicking the crap out of bad guys fun. Sometimes she just wanted to go out and do all the things everyday people did with their lives without having to worry about some psycho mutant trying to take over the world or hold one of her friends hostage.
She never thought she missed out on having a life being a member of Mutant X. She'd thought of that the day Adam approached her and never regretted her decision. But sometimes, she couldn't help her natural curiosity at what might have been. Call it the feral in her. Before she joined Mutant X she was much more reckless in her ways and felt very much thankful she'd had a chance to get that under control having joined the team. She knew this was a better place for her, just like it had become for her friends Emma, Jesse, and Brennan. They all leaned how to control their powers, emotions, and mutant lives after having joined. If she'd never joined she probably never would have met the people she considered to be her best friends. She loved her fellow mutant friends and Adam with every fiber of her genetically altered being. Before them no one had ever truly understood or supported her the way they all did. She knew she couldn't live without them, or at least not live as happily if she were all alone. The one thing she was sure of even when in doubt about her own abilities sometimes was that she was where she belonged. She was in the place she belonged with the people she belonged with.
Sometimes she'd admit her own abilities took her a bit by surprise, but she'd never say they scared her. She knew she'd complained once or twice about dealing with some things that came with it but felt in her heart it was the way she was meant to be. And she loved it. She loved turning her brown eyes yellow at an oncoming foe and taking them off guard with her superior speed and strength. She loved a good ass kicking and always felt satisfied afterwards.
The more she thought about her mutant life the more she knew how bored she'd be with anything else. Her animal instincts couldn't be tamed living among humans and not her mutant friends. They had so much fun together and any doubts it was by far worth it would quickly leave her mind. She'd touched so many peoples' lives and had her own touched in ways she never would've dreamed. As a member of Mutant X she had experienced so much joy and purpose in her life and best of all she shared it with her best friends. Those who she was destined to share her life with and whose destinies were meant to intertwine with her own.
Shalimar smiled as she tucked herself in tighter to the sheets. She closed her eyes and smiled as she felt the anticipation of what tomorrow would bring for her and her mutant mates sinking in as she gently purred herself to sleep.
