Chapter 2

Jakes POV

"Hey Bells? How about the diner? Ya know since it's the only place around," I laughed walking back to the lobby, but Bella was nowhere to be found. The necklace on the counter. I hadn't heard the door open for her to leave and I thought she had just recommended getting lunch. "Bella? Hey pop, did Bella leave?"

"I didn't see her leave," Billy said from his spot behind the jewelry counter. Grabbing the necklace, I went outside to see if she was anywhere there, but she wasn't. But the strange girl was.

"Hey, you!" The girl turned to me with a shy smile. "Were you serious this is magic? My friend is gone but no one saw her leave."

"She's fine," the girl smiled, "My name is Alice… She's my great grandmother."

"Ok, you are seriously off your rocker," I said walking away from her and back into the store. Bella had to have left without anyone seeing her. My dad was the best but maybe not the most observant unless it was a customer. I tried to calm my thoughts, reassure myself that she was fine.

Bellas POV

I'm not sure how long I was unconscious, I began waking to feel a cool cloth on my head. "Mom?"

"Easy honey," it wasn't my mom that was taking care of me, but a kind older woman. She had her blonde hair pinned up, she wore a gentle smile, and her green eyes were very kind. She wore a simple gray dress with a white apron on top and an old white hat. I'd seen this outfit in pictures. "I'm going to get Dr. Cullen." I looked around and wasn't sure where I was. I knew I had to be in a hospital, but it wasn't any I'd seen. There were multiple beds lining the walls, patients filled each one for different reasons. I could feel my breathing picking up as I panicked. Where was Jake? And my mom?

"Sweetheart, calm down," the woman was back with two men following her. She began pushing me back down, but I was freaking out. I wanted my mom. "Doctor?"

"No, please, where's my mom? I need to leave!" I struggled but soon the younger of the men was on my other side. He was very handsome. Dirty blonde hair that was slicked back and dark green eyes hidden behind a pair of glasses.
He took my hand and began doing circular motions on my wrist. For some reason, it was calming. "Shh, what's your name?"

"Uh… Bella. Bella Swan." I could feel my breathing evening out. "Please, where's my mom? Where am I?"

"Miss. Swan, I'm Edward Mason. You are going to be ok. This is my uncle, Dr. Cullen, and my mom, Elizabeth Mason." I should have guessed she was his mom. The green eyes were a dead giveaway! "Miss. Swan, you are in St. Joseph's hospital in Phoenix." Phoenix? How had I ended up in Phoenix?

"I'm from Washington," I looked between the three figures surrounding me. "I need to get home! My mom's probably freaking out! And Jake… I can't be here!"

"We're going to give you a little something to calm you down, you need to rest. You were very delirious when you were brought in," Dr. Cullen stated then began speaking with Edwards mom, leaving me with Edward who was busy writing something on a clipboard.

"This is going to sound crazy but, what's the date? I don't recognize anything, and I think maybe I hit my head, either that or I am going crazy," I chuckled but was met with concerning eyes.

"It's December 10th," ok, still same day. I let out a sigh of relief. Maybe it was some event they were having at the hospital. Like role play? Maybe I was in Seattle but they had to go along with the charades. "1914." Or not…

Time seemed to pass differently as I spent my days in St. Josephs. Edward and his mom stopped by multiple times to check on me, but I watched as they dealt with multiple people. I knew Elizabeth was a nurse, but I wasn't sure Edwards role in the hospital. The food wasn't great, slops of things thrown on a metal tray and handed to me. I think it was supposed to resemble mashed potatoes but as I moved it with my spoon, it was very runny.

"You need your strength," Elizabeth mused as she checked my vitals. "You'll be leaving us soon."

"Is there a hotel I could stay at after? I don't have any money so I'm not sure how that will work…." I had to figure out how to get back home, but I wasn't even sure what I did that brought me to this time.

"As it just so happens, my sister runs a boarding house. She's Dr. Cullens wife. She has a couple of tenants now, but I know she has space, would you like me to get that set up for you?" I nodded; grateful I had landed in a place with such kind people. "No problem, I will let you know."

"How long have I been here? Time has been kind of a blur…"

"Only a couple of days, It's December 13th. Are you going to try to get home for Christmas?" I sighed and shook my head. I had no idea of how to get home and feared I was stuck here for the foreseeable future. "Well, you are more than welcome to celebrate Christmas with us."

"Mother, Dr. Cullen needs your assistance," Edward said popping up behind his mother. She nodded and gave me a small smile.

"I'll get back to you about the space. If it works out then you'll be going there tomorrow. I'll make sure you have everything you need."

"Thank you," I said and watched as she walked off. Edward took a seat next to my bed and just sat there. "You don't need to sit with me. I'm ok."

"I'm done for the day, and I need to wait on my mom anyway," he bent down and pulled out a vintage checkers board. "You play?"

"Not since I was little," I admitted with a shrug. I sat up straighter as he put the board on the bed. "So, I'm thinking Dr. Cullen is your uncle? I know your mom is a nurse, but what about you?"

"You can make the first move," Edward said with a wave of his hand over the board. "Well, I'm truly just helping. I would like to become a doctor myself, but that seems like a dream at the moment."

"Because of the war?" He nodded. I carefully watched as he made a move with a black checker, placed me in a perfect spot to jump two of his pieces. I smirked and did just that, he couldn't help but chuckle himself. "Why weren't you drafted?"

"Asthma." Ah… That made sense, I'd heard stories of reasons why someone couldn't be drafted. We continued out the game until it came down to just a few pieces, we were pretty tied up but he made a mistake that quickly cost him.

"And with that," I started then jumped his final piece, "I win."

"Ah, come on!" He laughed, "I thought you hadn't played since you were little?"

"I hadn't, it's not my fault you're not a good player."

"Ready son?" Mrs. Cullen came up behind him, putting her hand on his shoulder. "Looks like you beat him?"

"I sure did!" I said proudly.

"Bella, I talked to Dr. Cullen and he confirmed they have space and that you're more than welcome!"

"I can't thank y'all enough for your kindness," I said as Edward got up, ready to leave. With a small nod, they bid me goodnight and walked off. I slid back down in my bed and just stared at the ceiling. Christmas was coming and it made me sick to my stomach thinking what my mom and my friends were going through. They had no idea where I was or if I was okay. I felt sick to my stomach as I closed my eyes, a tear escaping, I was so homesick.
