I'm posting this later than I originally intended, but my dog had to have surgery, and honestly, my family spent all of last week thinking he was gonna have to be put down. So like, I'm not gonna do the apology I would typically do for posting late because my dog outranks fanfic, ya know?

That being said, this is going to be the last part of this story, so I hope y'all enjoy?

There's some self-harm in this part, so be prepared for that.

Hunter looked in the mirror, running a hand over his clothes to smooth out a few minor wrinkles. He looked more like his old self than he had in forever, and yet, he looked entirely different. He wasn't even sure if his uncle would recognize him or not, now (was he sad about that? Or did that help reassure him he was safe?).

At least he looked nice? Or at least, he thought he did. Hopefully, his outfit was the appropriate level of formality. He really didn't want to show up and find out everyone else was dressed much nicer than he was. Everyone else seemed to think his outfit was fine so far, though, so he was pretty sure he'd gotten it right.

From his shoulder, Rascal gave a little chirp, poking him in the cheek.

"You think I look okay, right?" Hunter asked the palisman, turning his head toward it.

Rascal chirped again, but then, without warning, the bird hopped up and flew on top of his head.

"Ah, Rascal, I just combed it!" he exclaimed, though he made no actual attempt to get Rascal out of his hair.

He sighed.

A moment later, a voice called through the door.

"Hey, Hunter, are you almost done? We're going to be late!"

He jumped slightly but collected himself just as quickly and called back:

"Yeah! I'll be out in a second!"

He gave himself one last glance before opening the door and stepping out into the hallway. There, he found Luz fully dressed and ready. She'd opted to wear what was apparently an updated version of the outfit she wore to Grom, keeping the suit top but replacing the pink tutu with a long, purple skirt instead. He was pretty surprised that she'd ultimately decided not to wear that horrible red jacket, and he wondered if she would have if it fit her better.

"Ah, good, you're ready!" Luz exclaimed. "So, we're going to quickly drop by Amity's house to meet up with her and the twins. Willow and Gus said they'd meet us at the school."

"Okay," Hunter accepted with a shrug.

Luz smiled and did a quick, excited hop.

"I can't believe this is my first dance with Amity as a couple!" Luz told him. "I mean, we danced together a bit at Grom, but that was just to defeat Grom, you know? And back then, I didn't even know that Amity had wanted to ask me to go with her, so it was different, you know? This time we're actually going together."

Hunter didn't really get why Luz was so excited, considering that she and Amity had been on plenty of dates by now, and he wasn't sure why going to a dance was all that different (after all, if they wanted to dance together, couldn't they do that whenever they wanted?). Despite not completely getting why she was so excited, though, he could admit to himself that seeing her happy was nice. So, he gave her a nod and started to walk past her down the hall.

"Well, we better get going, then," Hunter shouted back. "We don't want Amity to think you forgot to pick her up."

Luz gasped in an exaggeratedly dramatic fashion, easily catching up to him as she began walking.

"I would never! How dare you suggest I would do such a thing!"

XXX

The flight to the Blight household was quick and uneventful, and the two of them hopped off of Rascal with little fanfare as they reached the house's front gate. Luz started to run toward Amity as soon as her feet hit solid ground, and the two of them ended up in some kind of spinning hug once they made contact.

"You look great, Amity!"

"So do you, Luz."

Hunter's attention, however, was diverted from the two of them by another voice.

"Aaaaaw, look how cute Mittens is!" Emira said, pitching her voice up before letting out a sigh. "Man, I wish someone would sweep me up like that. I mean, seriously, we were ditched last time, and I didn't even get asked out this time!"

For some reason, although Emira seemed to be talking about Amity, she was staring right at Edric, who was again blushing randomly. She also elbowed him for some reason, and the only thing Hunter could think of was that Edric did have a date, and Emira was jealous about being the only one of her siblings who didn't have one. A brief look around didn't show anybody else, though, so perhaps he was meeting his date at the school, just like Luz was meeting up with Willow and Gus.

Then, Emira turned her attention to him, and with a wide, teasing grin, she continued speaking.

"Maybe I'll just have to ask Hunter, since no one had the balls to ask him out, either."

Hunter blinked in confusion, since he was pretty sure she was joking and he wasn't sure how to respond. Edric, however, just turned redder.

"Em!"

She chuckled and then lifted a hand to pose dramatically, as if she was pretending to faint.

"Oh, alas! I suppose it's not meant to be!"

He got the distinct impression that everyone was acting weirdly. Well, Luz was acting the way she usually did around Amity, but Edric and Emira were definitely both acting strange. What was it about going to dance in a gymnasium for a few hours that made everyone suddenly get all… he didn't even know.

Hunter really didn't understand dances.

XXX

It wasn't long before Hunter found himself at the entrance to the school. Luz and Amity had run off with Gus and Willow almost immediately, and Emira left right after, saying that she was going to go talk to Viney. And that left Hunter and Edric standing together awkwardly. Hunter thought that he'd go leave with whoever his date was, but he just kept standing there. And Hunter wasn't really sure what to do, so he just kept standing there as well.

"Sooooooo… Uh. Youlooknice," Edric spoke quickly.

Hunter blinked.

"Huh?" he spoke, caught off-guard. "Oh. Um. Thanks…?"

A long pause stretched out between them.

"So… You aren't gonna, like…," Hunter continued in an attempt to break the silence. "You're not going to go find whoever your date is?"

"Huh?" Edric returned, eyes widened slightly. "I… I don't have a date, either… Ha… You know, I figured I didn't want a repeat of last time… So…"

"Oh," Hunter said, surprised. "I thought Emira was jealous you had a date… Why was she being all weird, then…?"

Hunter tilted his head, looking to Edric for an explanation.

"Ah, well, you know how siblings are…"

Hunter kept staring at him.

"I don't, though? I don't have any siblings."

Edric let out a short laugh.

"Let's just count Luz for the sake of the example, okay? Siblings can just be weird sometimes…"

Hunter still didn't really get what Edric was trying to say, but he wasn't really sure if pursuing an answer was really the best use of their time. Edric seemed to be dodging something, so Hunter wasn't sure he would end up getting a straight answer anyway.

"… O… Kay… Should we go in, then?" Hunter asked. "I mean, we're here to go to the dance, so I guess we should… go to the dance?"

Edric laughed again, giving him a smile.

"Yeah, you're right. Let's go."

XXX

Despite being the one to suggest going inside, Hunter regretted it almost immediately. If he thought that the hallways during the day were chaotic, he didn't even know what to call the inside of the gymnasium. The entire room was full of students, all dancing and bumping into each other along with blaring music and flashing lights. Adding to the noise, as if the music itself wasn't enough, at least half of the people in the room were talking, and the overlapping voices made it almost impossible to make out a single one. Within a few moments of entering the room, Hunter had been knocked into by at least five different people, and his ears were already starting to hurt. He couldn't help tensing as he stared out at the crowd with wide eyes.

"Hey, are you okay?" Edric asked him, practically yelling despite their close proximity.

The shout didn't help matters, but he didn't want to make Edric feel bad for it, considering he wouldn't have been able to hear him if he hadn't yelled. Instead, Hunter took a deep breath and tried to focus on the weight of Rascal in his cloak pocket.

He was fine. He'd been able to deal with noise and people before, and as the Golden Guard, he'd had to deal with even worse. He could handle this. It was just a school dance, and this was a room full of teenagers having fun. He was a teenager. He was supposed to be having fun. He would have fun, and he'd get over the noise and the lights and be fine.

"Yeah, I'm fine!" Hunter replied, his tight voice also being forced to a louder volume than he would have preferred. "So, uh. What should we do?"

Edric looked at him for a long moment, golden eyes seeming to be searching for something, before he gently grabbed Hunter by the hand.

"How about we go sit on the bleachers for a bit?" he suggested.

Hunter nodded, thinking that would be better than trying to dodge their way into the crowd. It would still be noisy, but at least there wouldn't be quite so many people touching him.

Seeing his nod, Edric led him over, not letting go of his hand. The two of them sat down and stared out at the crowd below. Hunter was able to pick out Luz and Amity after a few minutes, seeing them dancing a little left of the center of the gym. The two of them were swinging along to the music, and from what he could see from his position, they seemed to be having fun.

Hunter didn't think he was having fun yet. He felt like he was supposed to go dance, but he really didn't want to. And he didn't really have to, right? Everyone already told him he didn't. But it was a dance, and it seemed like most people were, in fact, dancing.

"It's kind of a lot, huh?" Edric asked suddenly.

Hunter turned his attention back to the boy beside him, tilting his head.

"Grom was a little more subdued than this," Edric continued. "But I guess the dance committee was trying to make Bonecoming a little more exciting, since there aren't any monster fights."

Hunter just shrugged. He didn't want to admit that he was already feeling miserable, even if it was probably obvious.

"Just tell me if you want to step outside for a bit or something, okay?" Edric told him. "I don't really feel like dancing tonight, anyway."

Hunter nodded, though he silently wondered if Edric was lying and Hunter was stopping him from actually enjoying the dance.

XXX

The longer the night went on, the worse Hunter felt. Each pounding beat of the music felt like it was being hammered into his skull, and each flash of a light felt like it was being stabbed into his eyelids. His heartbeat was faster than it usually was, and he couldn't keep his body from tensing longer than a minute or two.

Throughout the evening, a couple of Edric's friends stopped by to chat with him, and even though Hunter hadn't even met most of them, they seemed to expect him to participate in their conversations, and he just couldn't. It was taking most of his focus to keep himself sitting there, and adding conversation with strangers into the mix wasn't possible right then. And to make it worse, some of them asked Edric if he wanted to dance or go somewhere to do whatever, but Edric kept refusing. And Hunter had the feeling that he was mostly refusing so he could stay with Hunter, which was only making him feel worse, because not only had he ruined his own evening by coming, he had ruined Edric's as well.

Edric also kept asking him if he wanted him to get any drinks or food from the snack table, and Hunter kept refusing that as well. He really didn't feel like eating, but after the third time Edric asked, Hunter was starting to wonder if she should just accept regardless. Maybe Edric was hungry but didn't want to just leave him there. Maybe Edric wanted an excuse to leave him there for a while and go do something else. Maybe Hunter was supposed to eat the snacks and he was messing up some kind of rule of dances again.

The sleeves of his shirt wouldn't stay in the right spot, and the waistband of his pants was just a little too tight, but it felt like it was digging deeply into his skin. His hair kept going in his face and tickling his nose, and his socks kept sinking down into his shoes. The weight of the cloak around his shoulders provided some measure of relief, but it also brought up memories from the last time he'd worn a cloak.

It seemed sudden, but really, it had been slowly creeping up the entire evening. His hands started to tremble, and a cold, anxious energy began to spread through his chest. His fingernails were digging into his hands, his gloves having been left at home for the evening. His vision lost its focus, and his mind followed shortly after.

"Hunter? Hey, are you okay?"

He couldn't be here anymore, not for even a single second longer. Every sound and light and touch was too much, and he just couldn't do it.

He shot up to a standing position, and without even thinking about Edric at all, he bolted down the bleachers and out of the gymnasium.

XXX

Edric had been kind of worried about Hunter all evening. At first, he thought that Hunter might have caught on to the fact he'd wanted to ask him to be his date and felt awkward about it, but he amended that theory as soon as they actually got to the dance and Hunter asked where his date was. And then they went inside, and Edric could tell that the loud, crowded atmosphere was making Hunter uncomfortable.

He thought that it might at least help to stay in the bleachers, so that's where they spent most of the night. Edric didn't mind, and really, he wouldn't have minded if Hunter wanted to go outside for a while, either, but it seemed like Hunter was determined to stay in the gymnasium for some reason.

Or, it seemed like that until Hunter suddenly jumped up and ran out of the room.

Edric didn't even have time to realize what was happening before Hunter was gone- he was, apparently, incredibly fast. But when he did, he realized that Hunter had just run off without warning, most likely because he'd reached his limit.

"Shit," Edric cursed under his breath, getting up to follow him.

The problem, which became quickly apparent, however, was that Edric had no idea where Hunter had gone. The school itself was quite large and had many rooms, and Edric had no guarantee that Hunter had remained close-by. Titan, he didn't even know if Hunter was still at the school. He could have started flying back to the Owl House by now. Or anywhere.

But it wasn't like he could just leave Hunter alone and go back to the dance. He seemed upset, and he'd be a pretty crappy friend if he just ignored Hunter to go mess around.

So, Edric decided he'd just have to look until he found him.

XXX

At first, Hunter wasn't paying attention to where he was going, but at some point, he was able to discern where one of the school's bathrooms was and decided to hide himself in there. Luckily, there wasn't anybody inside (and, considering that the lights were off, it was likely no one was supposed to be), and he quickly locked himself in one of the stalls, sliding down to the floor.

His breathing was rough, and he couldn't stop himself from getting into a rocking motion (and he couldn't stop the memory of a sting in his shoulder as a voice inside of him reminded him that his uncle did not like it when he acted like this). He lowered his head toward his chest, his hands reaching up to pull at his hair, the sharp pain helping just a little. At some point, he noticed the tears streaming down his face.

He hated this. He hated getting like this, hated being like this. Everyone else got to go to the dance, and apparently, they were having fun. So why wasn't he? Why was he sitting here, crying in a bathroom, instead of dancing and laughing and talking and doing what everyone else was clearly able to do? He used to be the Golden Guard, used to be able to hide behind his mask and do whatever he had to, and now he couldn't even do things a normal teenager could do. Why was he less able to handle things now that he was away from his uncle? Belos's tasks had always been difficult, and he'd still gotten them done. So what changed?

He felt Rascal wiggling his way out of his pocket, the wooden bird hopping onto his shoulder and cuddling up to his cheek. That helped a little, too, but not as much as pulling his hair.

He just wanted it to stop. He wanted to calm down and go back and spend time with his friend and actually have fun. He didn't want to sit on this gross floor in the dark, crying like a toddler.

His thoughts slipped past him like sand in an hourglass, until he eventually got an idea. If pulling his hair helped, maybe doing worse would help more.

And so, Hunter began to dig around in his pockets for the pens and paper he always carried around now. He started with a small light glyph so he could see what he was doing, and upon tapping it, its gentle light surrounded him in a way that was much more comforting than the flashing lights in the gymnasium. Then he drew an ice glyph, and even though he ignored Rascal's confused chirp, he did remember that he had to be careful when it came to bleeding wounds, so he drew up one of Lillith's healing glyphs as well. Almost as an afterthought, he rolled up one of his sleeves.

With a simple tap, the ice glyph produced a sharp icicle, practically a blade. Now, Rascal's chirping turned urgent, and Hunter felt bad about flinching at the noise. He shook his head over and over, trying to get Rascal to understand that he wasn't going to hurt himself too badly. Just a little, and he'd use the healing glyph. But he couldn't explain that, as the only word he managed to get out was a quiet 'sorry'.

It took only one simple motion to forge a red line across his wrist, and repetition revealed three more. He stared down at the wounds for a while, focusing on their sting instead of the way that even his own harsh breaths were making his ears hurt. Really, they weren't very deep- the icicle was sharp, but fragile, and the wounds were closer to papercuts than anything else. Even still, they were bleeding quite a bit more heavily than they usually would for someone (who wasn't a Grimwalker) else.

He let himself just sit and feel the sting for a few minutes, and he felt himself calming down just a little. Rascal was still chirping at him, but Hunter still didn't really have the ability to give a response at the moment. Instead, he grabbed some toilet paper and began wiping the blood up, throwing the soiled paper into the toilet. Then he slapped the healing glyph onto his arm and wrapped more toilet paper around it, eventually slipping his sleeve back over it.

With that done, Hunter let himself curl back into a ball on the floor, rocking a little less frantically.

He was okay. He was going to be okay. He just had to wait it out.

XXX

Edric had looked through most of the school's first level before he opened the door to one of the bathrooms. At first, he thought it was empty, seeing as the lights were off, but he noticed a faint glow coming from inside one of the stalls.

"Hunter?" he called out.

He didn't receive a response, but he did hear what sounded like a sharp intake of breath, followed by a sniffle. And then he saw a small, red bird hop out from under the stall, and he knew it was definitely Hunter inside.

And it sounded like Hunter was crying.

So, Edric flipped the lights on and stepped into the bathroom, closing the door behind him, and then walked over to the occupied stall. Now that he was a little closer, he could definitely hear the sounds of very quiet crying.

"Hunter? Are you okay?" Edric questioned, lightly knocking on the door. "It's Edric."

This time, he got a response, but it was just a meaningless sound rather than words. Edric wasn't really sure what he was supposed to do, but he could at least try to comfort him, right?

Glancing down, he could see that Hunter was sitting on the floor in front of the toilet, moving slightly in a repetitive motion.

"Hey, do you think you can open the door?"

He waited for a minute, but just as he thought he wasn't going to get a response, Hunter spoke a single word:

"…N-No…"

Edric frowned, but he figured that Hunter probably didn't want him to see him cry.

"Okay," he accepted, lowering himself to sit on the floor in front of the stall, forcing himself not to think about how disgusting it probably was. "I'll just wait out here, okay?"

Edric leaned back a little. He was pretty sure that Hunter had been overwhelmed by everything in the gymnasium. He didn't exactly know a lot about Hunter's life before he came to Hexside, but he had apparently been homeschooled and had never been to a dance before, so he probably wasn't expecting the level of noise and everything else. Even Edric was a little surprised, since most of the school dances he'd been to had been a little more subdued. He kind of wished they hadn't all convinced Hunter that he should come without explaining what the atmosphere was like, but Edric hadn't really known that Hunter had problems with loud noises. Sure, he was pretty jumpy, but that seemed to be the case regardless of how loud something was. But if he had known beforehand, he probably would have at least given Hunter a warning.

"It's okay if the dance was overwhelming, you know?" Edric tried to comfort him, just in case Hunter was embarrassed about crying. "It's a lot of noise and people and lights, right?"

Hunter made another little noise.

After that, Edric decided to stay quiet for a while. If Hunter had been overwhelmed by the loud music, he probably wanted to have a few minutes of quiet.

And so, there they sat.

XXX

It took a while, but Hunter eventually got up and unlocked the stall with a metallic click. He pulled the door open slowly, and Edric jumped to his feet. As Hunter stepped out of the stall, he tried to hide his face, but Edric could still see the blotchy redness that showed he'd been crying.

"… Sorry…," he muttered. "I ruined the entire night, and then I made you sit in the bathroom."

Edric frowned again.

"You don't have to apologize, dude," he told him. "I chose to spend time with you because I wanted to, and I stayed in here because I was worried. I'm more concerned about whether you're okay or not, ya know?"

At this, Hunter gave him a somewhat suspicious look, as if he didn't believe him, but after a moment, he sighed.

"… Okay," he accepted. "I'm… I'm gonna go wash my face."

Hunter went over to the sink and splashed cold water on his face, which didn't really do much for the redness, but Edric supposed it was better than nothing. After he was done, though, he just stood there awkwardly.

"Hey, do you wanna go home?" Edric offered. "The dance is almost over, anyways, and I can just text the others so they know we left a little early."

Hunter hesitated for a moment before nodding.

"Don't- Don't tell them about this, okay?" Hunter requested. "I don't want Luz to worry about it…"

"I won't tell them," Edric agreed. "I'll just say we got tired or something. But, if Eda's still awake by the time we get back, she'll probably know that something's up."

Hunter's shoulders fell a little.

"Just… please don't tell them."

"Okay."

It only took a second to text the others, and Edric put his scroll away just as quickly before offering his hand to Hunter.

"Well, ready to go?"

XXX

The next morning, Hunter woke up late, though Luz would wake up even later. For once, Eda had apparently been the first one up, and he found her sitting at the kitchen table, nursing a mug of hot apple blood. He had more-or-less snuck past her last night, seeing as she'd been dozing on the couch as she waited for him and Luz to return.

He hadn't been able to sleep very well after coming back, mostly staring up at the ceiling and thinking. Once he had calmed down, he felt like an idiot for cutting himself again, despite knowing how dangerous it was for him. Even with the healing glyph, he'd still bled through the toilet paper and his sleeve by the time he'd gotten back. The crimson stains had only been hidden by his cloak, and he hoped to the Titan that Edric hadn't noticed.

It wasn't just the cutting, though. His anxiety was getting worse again, and he didn't really want to fall back into the state he'd been in when he'd first run from the castle. He had a little more clarity on it now than he did at the time, and frankly, he was a little terrified of ending up like that again. If things had been slightly different, he'd be dead right now. And sure, that was the goal at the time, but even with things still being difficult, he didn't think he wanted to die anymore.

But if he wasn't going to die, he was going to have to make things a little better for himself.

And so, Hunter walked into the kitchen and stiffly sat in the chair across from Eda.

"Oh, hey kid," she greeted. "I missed you coming home last night. How'd your first dance go?"

His shoulders lifted a bit, and he couldn't look Eda in the eye.

"I dunno…," he stalled. "Not… Not so great, I guess…"

He had to force himself to be honest, and each word felt like sandpaper on his tongue.

"Wanna talk about it?" Eda offered, her expression shifting into a frown.

"It was just… It was a lot of noise and people and stuff," Hunter told her, rubbing his arm. "And I just couldn't… I couldn't."

Eda nodded.

"That sucks, kid," Eda sighed. "Maybe dances aren't really your thing."

"Probably not," Hunter agreed.

"But hey, it's the weekend, so you have today to relax and unwind a bit, yeah?" Eda tried to be optimistic. "I can tell King and Luz to try to keep the noise down a little today."

Hunter nodded, but he probably would have agreed to anything she said right then. His mind was heavy with what he wanted to say next, and his anxiety was tangling his tongue in knots to try to keep him from speaking. Eda seemed to notice that something was still wrong, though, as her eyebrows furrowed.

"Is something else wrong, Hunter?" Eda pushed a little. "Whatever it is, you're not gonna get in trouble. Titan knows I'd be a hypocrite if you got into some kind of mischief."

"I… I didn't…," Hunter tried. "It's not that."

Actually, though, there was a little part of him that worried he'd be in trouble for what he did do. But he was just choosing not to listen to it.

"Okay," Eda nodded, seeming to know that he was going to say something serious. "You can tell me whatever you need to, kid."

"I… Eda, I," Hunter stumbled. "I ran into the bathroom and hid for a while."

"Okay?"

"I…"

Hunter couldn't bring himself to actually say it, so he lifted his injured arm. And then he watched Eda's expression go from confused to shocked to worried.

"Did you bandage it and use healing glyphs?" Eda asked, clearly concerned about his potential for blood loss.

Hunter nodded.

"Okay… Okay," Eda took a deep breath in. "Thank you for telling me, kid. Have you been hurting yourself a lot lately?"

"Not… like that," Hunter admitted, wrapping his arms around himself. "I mean, just like, pulling my hair or digging my nails into my palms and stuff."

Of course, he could tell Eda wasn't really happy about his answer, but she didn't yell at him. Instead, she seemed to be thinking of what she should say. Hunter, meanwhile, took that moment to gather up his courage.

"I-I've been doing some thinking," he spoke quickly. "I think- I think I should maybe… try going to therapy."

As soon as the words were out, his heartbeat started pounding even harder than it already had been, and he felt like he was waiting for a rock to fall and crush him. He knew that Eda wasn't like his uncle, that she wouldn't get mad and had, in fact, been the one to first suggest it. But even still, he couldn't keep the thoughts of his uncle punishing him every time he showed weakness from rising up in his mind.

Then, Eda let out a breath.

"Okay," Eda agreed. "I can set up an appointment with the therapist I told you about a while ago. But if you don't like them, I can find someone else."

Hunter nodded, feeling like he might end up crying again. Part of him wished he hadn't said anything, even though Eda had done nothing but be supportive.

"Hunter, I'm proud of you for asking for help," Eda told him. "I know how hard that can be, and you're doing great. Okay?"

He told that part of him to be quiet. Asking for help when he needed it wasn't a weakness. His uncle had been wrong, and he'd just been trying to hurt him. He didn't want Hunter to ask for help, but Eda did. And now he was going to get help, and hopefully, he'd get better.

And maybe, he could be okay.

The Battles Always Choose…"

XXX

To be clear, Hunter was experiencing a sensory overload rather than a panic attack this time. And also, I don't know how school dances are for other people, but mine have always kinda been more on the loud music/flashing lights side of things. Honestly, I don't think I've ever gotten through a school dance without hiding somewhere and/or leaving early.

I wanted this to have a positive ending, and I thought Hunter choosing to accept help (instead of accepting help he was kinda forced into accepting) would be a good way to do that. Also, I was originally going to have Edric ask Hunter to be his date for the dance AT the dance, but I didn't end up being able to fit it in anywhere without it being weird, so as it stands, the Goldric is technically one-sided? I would have probably had it be reciprocated eventually if I made the story longer, but since I kinda cut it short, this is the best I could do with it. So hopefully no one's too disappointed about that.

Well, whether this was a disappointing end or not, I hope y'all enjoyed reading.

Bye, I guess?
