"You may all be wondering why I've gathered you here today." Eggman's rough voice boomed across a loudspeaker.
Sonic woke up to find himself surrounded by people he couldn't see. He was stuck in the dark, in a cramped room. Suddenly, a garage door opened to a large room dominated by robots and various contraptions. Many other people around him stood up and all entered the room as Eggman flew in on his Eggmobile, a white flying pod with simple lever controls.
"This ain't class, Egghead!" Sonic yelled. "Open the doors or I'll kick your face in!"
"I think you will quickly regret that." He chuckled, a red humanoid robot coming behind him. It fired a missile at Sonic through a panel in its chest. At the last second, the missile turned to the sky and exploded harmlessly.
"As Sonic himself had pointed out to me, it's his pathetic friends that bring him victory. I don't seek to make friends. All I need is a sidekick, a loyal bodyguard. That's why you're here."
"Didn't know you hired out, geezer." Espio mocked.
"I'm not asking. One of you will serve me. The rest of you will all die!"
"Haven't you considered strength in numbers?" Sonic shot back.
"Of course I have. And each one can take down several of you." Eggman replied, 16 robots coming in behind him. They resembled humans, but they were square instead of round.
"I only need the strongest one of you. That's why I've decided to host a competition of sorts. You'll all be fighting each other. If you lose, you die. All sixteen of you will fight until there's eight, then four, then two, and the last one standing will live."
Shadow attempted to teleport out of the room, but all he could do was teleport to the ceiling, falling 20 feet down on his back.
"I proofed this room." The evil doctor explained. "You have no hope of escape but fighting for your life. Anyway, I've equipped all of my bots to kill at a moment's notice, so you may want to cooperate."
"It's just a scratch." Shadow grunted.
"Excellent." Eggman laughed. "You can take this time to introduce yourselves to each other, but I'll need my first two contenders to come here."
And so it began.
