"You're wearing that?"
"what's wrong with it?"
"I thought those pants went out last season?"
"Davina, please." Caroline raised her hand, "you wore uggs with Mini skirts."
"That was a phase!"
"and who cares what I wear, this dinner was your idea."
Davina came by earlier to Caroline's and decided to get dressed there. She brought her own tray of desserts as she didn't want to come empty-handed. Caroline on the other hand settled for a bottle of champagne.
"Don't you think they will already have that?" Davina wondered.
"more for us then."
Rina was settled in the corner playing with the green scratching post, she threw a fit earlier and bounced of the walls when she realized Caroline was getting ready to go over to the neighbors. After a hour or so, she tired herself out.
The dinner was beginning soon and she had just finished curling her last strand of hair. She settled for a long sleeve black turtle-neck that stretched perfectly around her torso, dark washed skinny jeans and her comfortable white slip ons. Davina was dressed in a floral strapless dress that she covered with a white cardigan and those disposable uggs- well I know what's definitely going on the Christmas list! Caroline thought.
The time was shown to be 6:35, Dinner was at 7, and Davina's nerves were 10 seconds away from exploding.
"oh no, you better not start the nervous nonsense! I will not be talking for you this time. I promise We will sit in silence." Caroline declared, watching Davina pace back and forth while chewing on her nails.
"and stop that! What did we say about your habit."
Davina stopped and looked down at her nails as she noticed what she was doing, before looking back at Caroline with a defeated sigh, "old habits die hard! Okay!?"
Caroline stifled a laugh at her friend's demise, "It'll be fine! Let's go it's about time."
Caroline filled Rina's bowl with water and food, while setting treats around the house for her to devour.
She looked back at the cat before exiting the front door, "Behave!"
Caroline could've sworn she saw her Roll her eyes.
This time, it was Davina who knocked.
And this time, it was the Female Fatale with pin straight blonde hair who answered.
she eyed the two carefully, Davina who caught herself staring; finally spoke up.
"good evening. We're a guest of Kol, I'm Davina."
"Caroline" the other blonde said from behind.
Davina plastered a big smile and lifted her basket of delights to show the woman, "I brought Crème brûlée"
Rebekah led the two to the dining room, indulging herself to one of the small crème brûlée's that Davina brought. Caroline looked around the manor, beautiful antique oil painting plastered all over the walls, some were finger painted, some made delicately by different brushes. She took notice of the the deeply polished marbled floor they walked upon, the material and design matching those on the wall, They passed large pillars down a hallway, before finally reaching the room that would hold the dinner.
In the middle, a 9-piece dining table was set, the materials were all white, with two large brown candles in the middle, the aesthetics reminded her of medieval times- yeah.. they definitely sleep in coffins- Caroline silently joked to herself.
Kol entered the room first followed by the suit guy.
"welcome Darlings! I hope Rebekah has greeted you well?"
"Oh shut it you. I do understand the concept of manners." She sassed to her brother.
"oh please Bekah, I've met cavemen with better table etiquette."
"that's enough you two, not in front of the guests." The man that followed Kol spoke up, he walked over to the girls and held out his hand.
"Elijah mikaelson."
The girls both took turns introducing themselves and finally gathered at the table to wait for their food.
"So, how did you become acquainted with Kol?" The man- Elijah, asked.
Caroline looked at Davina, signaling that she should answer. Davina looked back up and explained how they made desserts and brought them over, and then running into him at the market.
"wait. You made those delicious little delectable heavens!?" Rebekah gawked, looking at both the girls.
Davina couldn't help but giggle, "yeah, I'm glad you enjoyed them, it was worth Caroline's wrath."
"Its not my fault somebody doesn't know how to stir properly." Caroline muttered, setting her champagne on the table. Both Rebekah and Elijah uttered a laugh, while Kol kept his eyes on Davina.
Just then, another door opened and out came the mysterious drive way man- Niklaus. Kol looked over at him with a smirk.
"ah Nik! Finally decided to join us."
"Wouldn't miss family dinner now would I?" He responded, taking the available seat right across Caroline, looking directly at her.
"so we meet again." Caroline was taken aback, she didn't expect him to address her so soon.
"And so we do." She responded, popping the champagne lid off and pouring herself a drink before offering anyone else. If she was gonna do this, she should at least get some kind of kickstart.
"You have met already?" Rebekah inquired
"Sort of. If you consider stalking my driveway late at night." Caroline didn't know if the joke was appropriate, or the time to make it, and nobody laughed but Davina, which is better than silence, so that means she wasn't out of bounds.
"Care to elaborate." Caroline asked him.
"I just wanted to personally thank Ms.Caroline here, for the gift they brought us. I would like to extend my thanks to you as well." Klaus gestures towards Davina. "Caroline explained that it was your idea."
Davina nodded and everybody carried back to other conversations.
Klaus kept eyeing Caroline as the waiters brought out the food. It was a seafood boil, and boy did she love crawfish. She had to remind herself to eat like a lady, she was in front of a whole different family, outside her comfort zone, with only Davina, who had the attention span of a mouse. She gulped another sip of her alcohol.
"So Caroline, do you live alone?" Elijah spoke up, causing the attention to be on her.
"yeah, my parents left me the cottage a couple years ago."
"may I ask where are they?"
"an accident happened." Was all that she could mutter.
"i apologize, I didn't-"
"oh no don't worry! Trust me the whole pity thing is a phase, been there done that." She interrupted, "but I'm not completely alone, I have Davina, and my Cat.
"you have a cat?" Rebekah asked, suddenly interested of where the direction of the conversation could be going.
"Yes, long story short, I found her at the bottom of the well, I saved her life and it costed me a very expensive bag. Ever since then we been stuck together. Her name is Rina." She finished her introduction of Rina, before stabbing a piece of shrimp and sticking it in her mouth.
"you've had her for a long time?"
"9 years actually, I don't know, it's weird, I'm more of a dog person, but she scared off half the dogs in the neighborhood already so I'm kind of just stuck with her."
"that little she-devil is from the pits of hell Itself!" Davina exclaimed, earning a small chuckle from Kol.
"I bet." Klaus uttered softly that only his siblings can hear.
"I have just one more question" Rebekah stated.
Everybody looked at her anticipating while she stared at Davina.
"That dress with those shoes?"
Dinner went smoothly. Well, at least for Caroline's sake. She really believed that they were some masked murderers and probably were the head of a cult that consisted of killing people and sacrificing them for fame, but they were not bad, not bad at all.
Which means something is really bad.
Caroline shook her head slightly, getting the thoughts out of her head. Davina watched as Kol walked her around their garden, it was beautiful to say the least, and the way he looked at her was the equivalent of how a 7th grader falling in love with their classmate for the first time. Kol was boyishly charming, and he reminded her of a kid that probably stole candies from babies.
But she would just leave that for her friend to decide if that's what she wants, she is here for a good time, not a long time.
Klaus found the lonely beauty watching her friend.
"spying is not something I would've guessed were one of your hobbies."
Caroline jumped at the sudden appearance as she looked up at the intruder who stood at the top of the stairs.
"jeez! You almost gave me a heart attack!"
"I wouldn't have let you died so no worries." He grinned, walking around her as he descended down.
"and I'm not spying! Just.. observing protectively."
"rest assure sweetheart, I doubt my brother will harm your friend."
"that sounds like something a brother of a serial killer would say." She half joked, looking up at the man next to her. To say he was a fine piece of art would be an a understatement. His ice cold Blue eyes staring out the window, his sandy blonde hair curled just to perfection, the way his dark blue Henley fits around his torso, exposing his necklaces and a bit of chest.
"So where are you from originally?" She cracked.
"A very far away place." He uttered.
"Ha. Ha. Not very funny"
"I'm From Virginia."
"No way, me too! But The accent doesn't sound very American."
"well, I spent some time in other parts of the world."
"what has been your favorite so far?"
"Rome. Or maybe Tokyo, better yet, Paris."
Caroline couldn't help but chortle, also feeling a little bit envious that he got to see those beautiful places, and all she has seen is two small towns that she could probably jog around for an hour and already see the whole thing.
She lifted her glass to her lips and took a few sips.
"Have you ever been?" He asked, staring at her lips as they parted.
"No. just Virginia and this place. When we moved out here I was just a kid, not really having a say-so. But now that I'm grown, I've gotten attached. I made this place my home."
"I'll show you.." he spoke a little to eagerly, Caroline couldn't hold back the smile she had. He continued, "Home is never where you are, but what you feel."
"Oh, so you're a philosopher." She amused, giving him a small flirtatious look.
"I would say yes but I would be lying, I'm more of a artist."
"Ah, an artist. Can never go wrong with that. My last boyfriend was a truck driver with anger issues. Let me tell you, I'm sick of Friday night football, seems like it was the only thing that ever kept him satisfied." She rambled.
"may I ask what happened?"
Caroline sighed, finishing the last gulp. "People grow apart, guess it wasn't really my epic love. Stupid, I know right?" She looked over the terrace, mind wondering back to her stupid and irritable days with Tyler.
"Don't take this the wrong way sweetheart, but I'm glad." Caroline could do nothing but roll her eyes, "I bet."
"I'd like to take you out, a real dinner."
Caroline almost choked on her own saliva, looking up at him as if he knocked her in the face with bricks. "Did you not consider the food we just had as a real dinner?"
Klaus couldn't help the smirk that grew on his face.
"I mean, no family, just two people getting to know each other."
Caroline gave the idea some thought.
"Come on! take a chance, I Dare You"
