Sleeping together
They had started this strange ritual right after the night shift got split up. She actually started it and he wasn't sure why, what it meant and how long it would continue. All these questions were racing through his sleep clouded mind as he reached out her pull her close. He inhaled the scent that was uniquely hers. It functioned as his sleeping pill on so many nights when nightmares chased away his much needed sleep.
He never noticed her coming to his bed as she always positioned herself as far away from him as she possibly could. Somewhere during the early morning he would instinctively reach out to her. He wondered what she was thinking when she found herself pressed against him when she woke up just before him.
He knew she was awake when he left for his shift. The intricacies of her body had become familiar to him early on. She was well aware he knew she wasn't asleep. It didn't keep him from kissing her every morning before he left, whispering he loved her into her ear. Two of them could play this game. A game which dealt with hidden feelings and insecurities.
It was confusing to him to find no evidence of her when he returned home after his shift. All traces of her presence in his house, his bed were accurately erased. The spare key she used was placed in the exact same position as he had left it the day before.
It was all she could offer right now and he would accept it, all of it, without hesitating. He wouldn't push her and push his luck.
Today the tables were turned. He had the day off. Continuing their carefully orchestrated sleeping routine the tension building up in his body was relieved the minute he noticed the presence of her frail body next to him.
He was wide awake, keeping his eyes carefully closed. Sensing the awakening of her body he strengthened his grip ever so slightly.
Carefully she managed to free herself, turning herself towards him, studying him. He prayed his acting skills were better than hers. Nevertheless he felt disappointed when she quietly left his bed, not expecting her to come back.
But she did, kissing him and whispering she loved him into his ear.
