"What did you do?" were the first words Kim could think of as she ran up to see Adam standing over a dead Barilla, with two shots in the back, minutes after he said everything would be better if Barilla just went away. Kim never considered Adam to be the type to kill someone in order to protect his family name, but the scene she was looking at right now, she wasn't so sure if that was right.
Those four words caused Adam to look at her in disbelief before storming off without a word. She was the one person he thought he still had in his corner and now it seems like even she has turned her back on him. It started with Kevin constantly questioning him because of the color of his skin. He knew where Kevin's intentions were, and didn't really have hard feelings towards him, but it still hurt. He thought Kevin knew him better than that.
Then there was his Dad. His own flesh and blood who had sold him out in order to save his own skin. That one hurt a lot. He knew his Dad was far from perfect, but never in a million years did he think his own father would sell him out. He was furious with his father, but the guy made a good point. If Barilla was arrested, the name Ruzek would become a joke.
He went to Voight, his boss that he looked up to, and asked to let Barilla walk. It wasn't an unreasonable ask. They let people walk all the time for a lot less. Hank shut him down with a hard no. So now it seemed like even his own boss didn't have his back.
Now, the girl that he loved, who he just started repairing his relationship with, basically just accused him of murder without actually saying so. Everyone he cared about had essentially turned their backs on him and for the first time in a really long time, Adam felt like he was on his own. He had no one left in his corner.
When the team arrived, he insisted it was a good shoot. He didn't miss the looks Kim gave every time he said that. It was like watching her accuse him again and again and he couldn't stand it. When a video surfaced of the actual incident, proving that it was, in fact, a good shoot, she couldn't even look at him. She knew she fucked up.
Once the case was over, Kim chased after Adam as he was walking to his car. She knew she needed to apologize. They were supposed to head to Bob's retirement party together, but now she wasn't sure if she would even be welcomed. When she finally caught up with him, she could tell he wasn't in a talking mood. She tried to apologize but it was almost like it went in one ear and out the other. He was completely shut down towards her. She found the nerve to ask about Bob's party. She was sure she'd be unwelcomed now. To her surprise, Adam told her she could still go, but she should drive herself.
What Kim didn't know was that Adam had no intentions of going to his Dad's party. He might stop by and drop of his gift, just to make an appearance, but he had no plans on staying. All he wanted right now, was to just go home and not have to talk to anyone.
He got in his jeep, glad to finally be able to quit acting like everything was fine. After taking a minute, he finally drove off. His plan was to run to the liquor store, grab something for himself and a bottle of whiskey for his dad, because even though he was extremely pissed at him right now, he was still his dad. Afterwards, he would stop at the party to drop it off, tell his dad he couldn't stay, then head home, order some pizza, put on a good movie and try to figure out where everything started going wrong.
He made it to the liquor store within 10 minutes of leaving work and was now making his way to his Dad's party. He was a few miles out when he stopped at a red light. As soon as the light turned green, he gently put his foot on the gas, making his way across the intersection when out of nowhere headlights caught his attention to his left. Before there was any time for Adam to react, the pickup truck was slamming into the driver's side of his jeep, sending the vehicle rolling.
Kim made it to Bob's retirement party about 45 minutes after leaving work. It would have been sooner, but she sat outside in her car trying to work up the nerve to walk in. She knew she would have to face Adam inside and she had no idea what to expect. Would he act like everything was fine in front of his father, call her out, or just completely ignore her? She was pretty sure he wasn't going to ignore her, otherwise he would have told her just not come, so it had to be one of the other two options.
If things went her way, Adam would put on a show like everything was ok while at the party, then afterwards they would go back to her place where they could sit down and talk and then eventually make up.
To her surprise, when she walked in, Adam was nowhere to be found. At first she thought she just beat him there, but after talking to Bob she started to get the feeling that Adam had to intentions on coming. She tried to call him, but it went straight to voicemail. She hung up and instantly tried again, with the same result. She hung around for a few minutes waiting to see if he was going to show up, but when it became clear to her that he wasn't, she decided to stop by his apartment.
She was about halfway there when she noticed a bunch emergency lights a few lights in front of her. As a cop, her curiosity kicked, wondering what happened. As the lights turned green, and she got closer and closer to the scene, she noticed two fire trucks, an ambulance and paramedic unit and a whole bunch of police cars. She rolled by the accident scene slowly trying to get a good look, but the fire trucks did a good job at blocking her view. All she managed to get a good look at was the pickup truck with a smashed in front end.
She hoped whoever was involved was ok, but didn't think too much more of it until… she looked in her review mirror and saw the second car involved. It looked a whole lot like Adam's jeep, or what used to be a jeep. Now it looked more like a mangled pile of metal that was currently be cut to pieces by firefighters. She wanted to keep going to Adam's, tried convincing herself it was someone else's jeep, but something kept telling her to stop.
Pulling over on the shoulder, she turned her car off and hesitantly made her way to the scene. As she approached, she noticed a rookie cop standing by the caution tape. She had seen him a few times in passing but couldn't for the life of her, think of his name. The closer got, the surer she was that Adam was involved with the accident.
The rookie cops' eyes grew as she approached. She might not know his name, but he sure knew hers. He had plans on joining them upstairs one day, so he paid extra attention whenever anyone in intelligence was around.
"Ma'am. I need you to stay behind the police tape." He tried his best to keep her back. He knew Kim and Adam used to a thing. He wasn't entirely sure where that relationship stood today, but either way he didn't think it would be good for her to see Adam right now.
Kim didn't even acknowledge the guy. Just ducked under the police tape and tried to approach Adam's mangled Jeep.
"Kim." The officer said firmly while lightly grabbing her arm. "You don't want to go over there."
Kim was surprised this guy knew her name, but she couldn't care right now. Any doubts that she might have had vanished when he told her she didn't want to go over there. "Why?" was all she managed to get out.
"It's bad." Was all he said, still holding onto her arm.
"Adam?" She had no doubts but she needed the confirmation.
The cop just nodded; glad he was still holding onto her arm because it made it easier to catch her as her knees gave out.
"Is he…?" Kim couldn't even bring herself to finish the sentence.
"No. I don't think so. He was still alive when I arrived on scene."
That sentence was enough to give Kim the strength to return to her feet. She needed to see Adam. She needed to see for herself that he was in fact alive. She needed to be there for him and only hoped he wouldn't push her away. Breaking free from the cops hold, she made her way over to the jeep, stopping a few feet short.
"Oh my God." She whispered under her breath as she got her first view of Adam. It was nowhere near what she was expecting to find. By the look of the jeep, she knew it had to be bad, she wasn't expecting it to be this bad though. He was completely unconscious, or at least it seemed like he was from where she was standing. The medics had him in a neck brace already while firefighters did their best to free him from the vehicle before it was too late. He was covered in blood and she had no idea where it was all coming from which scared her even more. The urgency of the firefighters and medics escalated her fear even more.
Tears fell as they finally freed Adam from the jeep. She wasn't sure if it was because she was happy they managed to get him out or because she was able to get a full view of him. She ran over to him as they were rolling him into the ambulance. Luckily, Sylvie was one of the medics on scene.
"Kim…" Sylvie had no idea when or how Kim got there.
"I need to be in there with him." Kim begged as Sylvie's temporary partner shut the doors.
"Kim. I don't think that's a good idea. I'm sorry. We need to go. You can meet us there." Sylvie hated denying Kim a ride, but in all honesty, she wasn't fully expecting Adam to make it to the hospital and she didn't want Kim's last memory of Adam to be him dying.
Kim wanted to protest. To beg Sylvie to let her go with them, but she knew there wasn't time. Adam needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible and any kind of argument would just delay that. So instead, she stepped away, and watched as the man she loved was rushed to the hospital, before running back to her car and rushing there herself.
Hey guys. This is my first ever fanfiction so I hope it's not too awful. I felt like there weren't nearly enough Adam stories so I decided to change that. I have absolutely no medical background but I promise to make this as realistic as google allows me. Also… I stopped watching Chicago Med a few episodes before the season where Conner left so that's going to be the Med crew being used since I don't know the new people.
