The next day, she raced out of her room and was racing toward the door, but Marie blocked the way.
"Where do you think you're going?"
"I'm just doing my healthy dose of Turf Wars, that's all," she shrugged. That was true. She indeed WAS going to do Turf Wars. But she was also trying to see Shark again. She did a wide, 'Just let me get on with my day' smile, hoping Marie had enough brain cells to comprehend.
After about a minute or so, Callie couldn't take it anymore, "Am I missing something?"
"Why yes, you are. Do you remember what you promised 4?"
"Hm, no."
She sighed and hit her forehead, slowly dragging her hand down her face, "You promised her that you would hang out with her, since it's her birthday today. And I don't mean one hour, no, I mean you spend the WHOLE day with her."
Callie took a moment to remember her saying that, "Oooooohhh. Okay, now I remember. I'll get on with it then." She side-stepped out the door, smiling a goofy smile the whole way. Phew, now that that's taken care of, I can go see Shark! But what about 4… Whatever. After she had left the building, she booked it to the lobby. She had just made it in time to join a Turf War.
She looked around at her team to see if Shark was there, and yet again, they saw each other. They waved hurriedly and, in no time at all, they were launched onto the turf. Whipping her roller out, she made a clear path for her teammates to go through. She had just splatted someone when all of a sudden, an Octoling jumped up right in front of her! She was just about to get splatted when Shark jumped up right behind her, and BAM! The Octoling was gone.
"Thanks!" she sighed in relief. It was a good thing he had shown up, or else that really would have cost the team a great amount of turf.
Shark smiled his charming smile, "Yeah, no problem!"
We only had a few seconds left, and it was pretty close. Oh, c'mon! Just a little more! Callie decided she would just make the most of it, so she just started to run around and start splatting things. 3, 2, 1. Time was up. Everybody looked up at the screen, crossing their fingers, hoping they had one by even the slightest bit. Judd leaned to the right, and just like that, Callie's team had one. By one point.
"YES! We did it!" exclaimed Callie. She looked around at her team, high-fiving each other, some exclaiming 'Woomy' or 'Veemo' at the top of their lungs. Shark came over and patted her on the back.
"Good job! It's really a good thing you decided to go crazy with the ink." He laughed, a low, and deep laugh.
"Yeah, well, I've gotta go… do something."
Shark's smile vanished, and he looked crestfallen, "Why do you keep leaving so soon? Don't you have any time for fun?"
Callie looked down at the ground and shifted awkwardly, "No, not really. I actually shouldn't have come in the first place. Goodbye."
She walked off without letting him protest, mad at herself for ditching 4 to come here. She walked down to the place 4 was staying at, and nearly ran her over. She appeared to be crouched down, playing in the dirt.
"OH! Four! I didn't even see you there! I'm so sorry!" Callie apologised, giving her a big hug. While she was hugging her, she could hear little sniffles.
Callie pushed 4 away at arms length so she could see her face. She was crying. Using her thumb, Callie softly brushed a tear away, "Four, are you okay? Why are you crying?" Unfortunately, she already knew what the answer was.
"Where were you? Mo-mom told me-e that you we-were gonna ha-ang out w-with me!" Four hiccuped, trying to calm herself down
"Mom? I didn't know you had… nevermind."
Four looked up at her, with a confused look, "Don't you know who she is? You grew up together and sing together. You know, Mom!"
Callie's face grew red because she was trying not to laugh. She had tears running down her face, and she let out a loud, tea-kettle laugh, "MARIE!" She continued to laugh for about a minute.
"Yeah, that's what I said, Mom." Four said, "And you still haven't answered my question! Where were you! I've been wastin' my birthday time, waiting around for a fat and lazy dummy who can't seem to spend time with me!"
After that insult, Callie stared at her, wide eyed with her jaw dropped. Has Marie been training this lady for the military? She has sought out to destroy me! Four looked at her with a huge glare and stuck her tongue out at her, and continued to insult her by saying things like, 'Meanie' and 'Jerk wad!'
"Okay, fine. I deserved that. But I was busy!" explained Callie.
"Busy with what?" a voice from behind hissed. Callie slowly turned around, scared of who it could be. Please don't be Marie, please don't be Marie! Once she had completed turning, she froze, her blood becoming ice. She could feel that her face turned ghostly white. It was Marie.
"Oh, uh- Turf Wars? I kinda, um… forgot?" she stuttered. She prayed Marie would buy it. But she didn't. She kept glaring at her, her eyes in tiny slits, fists clenched. Oh no, she's gonna beat the stuffing out of me! Slowly, Marie started to close the distance between them, not losing eye contact. Callie backed up, but when she did, Marie just walked faster. Once they were about a foot away, Marie raised her hand, and slapped Callie across the face.
"What do you mean 'I forgot?' I told you this morning, and you said you were gonna do it! You lied! And not only that, you ruined Four's birthday! What is wrong with you!? Have you no shame? No pity?!" Marie shouted, "I bet you were with that boy! You know, if he's gonna be a distraction and cause you to not do what you've been asked, then maybe you shouldn't be around him!"
Callie was speechless. Nobody had EVER hit her, ESPECIALLY not Marie. I goofed up big time! I knew I shouldn't have gone!
Callie cleared her throat, "Yeah, so, about that… I had kind of promised him that I'd see him today, since yesterday I left in such a hurry."
"That's no excuse! You had promised Four long before you even MET him!" Marie was getting impatient.
With all the yelling and fighting, Callie could just make out a tiny whimper. She looked down and noticed that she had stepped right on Four's fingers, and she looked absolutely terrified. I bet she's never seen this side of Marie before. Heaven knows I haven't. She promptly lifted her foot up and stepped aside, letting her move. Hastily, she ran behind Marie.
Sighing, Marie walked away, with Four trailing behind. Callie just stood there, taking in all that had happened. She stood there, in a daze, until a cold breeze brought her back to her senses. She looked straight ahead, right at the sunset. Oh, what a lovely sunset. Too bad I can't enjoy it, not with how I treated Four. Taking a deep breath, she walked down the streets of Inkopolis. She found a bench and plopped down. She sat there until the moon was shining brightly in the square.
"What is it with you, walking around the city in the dark? Don't you know it can be dangerous?" Shark announced.
"Gah! Where did you come from? Whatever, I just find it more peaceful around this time. No loud noises, just peace and quiet." replied Callie.
"Huh. That's one thing we have in common." He made his way beside her on the bench. She looked up at him and smirked, looking into his eyes. They practically glowed in the moonlight. His face was perfectly lit, almost making him look like an angel.
"That's nice. Well, I should probably get going. It gets cold around this time of year. Good night, Shark." She stood up, but when she went to leave, Shark stood up and leaned in, kissing her cheek. When he pulled away, he looked down at the ground and rushed away.
Standing there, she lifted her hand and touched her cheek, which was flaming hot. That boy is gonna be in my dreams tonight. She chuckled, and started to head in her own direction. Before she got to her house, she looked behind her, and smiled.
