The Apprentice

Chapter 10

Summary: Finally, after the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Harry asks (demands) Dumbledore to train him for his inevitable battle against the Dark Lord.

Wulfkin17: I agree with you on some things, like me having errors, and Harry not explaining Rituals and the internal dialogue. But, as for Hermione, her behavior will be explained in this chapter and they will be back to normal, as normal as they can be. Sorry for the kind of bad chapter (I think) and thanks for the feedback, people like you, and your feedback helps me improve. :) Also, I forgot about Rita, lol.

Guest: Thanks

PrinceFroze: Thanks and Ginny will be making her appearance soon.

Yoganksri: There will be a Wizengamot Session in the next chapter (Chapter 11). The session will be for a vote of no confidence for Fudge. I will write about the muggle-born not being able to do powerful magic below. Hermione will be redeemed; I don't like bashing particularly. Harry defeated Minerva and Flitwick when all 3 of them were using spells till 7th year, and only Charms and Transfiguration. If it were a full-on fight or a fight where there was no limiter on the spells then Minerva and Flitwick would win.

Harrypotterpercyjacksonfan90: Thanks.

TheBandit025: Hermione is not jealous because Daphne has Harry's heart, it's something else that will be covered in this chapter.

CaskettFan5: Will fix those typos. The Magical Core topic is non-canon I know, I will need it in future chapters. I will explain Harry's speech.

Now many of you think that Harry is prejudiced against muggleborns, but that is not the case. Like CaskettFan5 said, old blood is needed, with pure new blood to make the wizard powerful. What I meant by Hermione not being able to do more powerful magic Is that her core is small. Not as small as an average muggleborns, but not equal to a full pureblood. Purebloods, having old blood in them, make them have a larger core. Now having a large core does not affect the spell, it just allows the person to have the capability to throw out more spells. If your core is depleted you aren't able to perform spells. The more powerful the spells the more magic it uses from your core. Control is also needed, having the perfect control to achieve the perfect result without using too much power is needed. If there is no control then magic will be wasted and the core will be depleted faster. Hermione has near-perfect control allowing her to outperform purebloods because they are arrogant and do not practice control. The spells Harry has learned like Fiendfyre require a lot of power, the power which many purebloods and muggleborns lack. The power which Harry, Voldemort, Dumbledore, and Grindelwald have. That is the only reason Hermione is not able to do some of the spells Harry can do. Harry in the future will teach her the less magic-taxing spells. Remember this is no prejudice against muggleborns.

Also, I have fixed the errors in the last chapter. Thanks for the reviews. :) Another thing, sorry for the late update, I had my exams, school, and a project I took place in (I won). I am going to start weekly updates, but we'll see.

"Now Daphne, today you will be performing every spell you know. After I get to know what you know I will start of by first finishing the 6 and 7th-year curriculum with you and then moving on to the curriculum of the Auror Academy. Understand?" said Harry.

Daphne nodded before she started casting all of the spells she knew, meanwhile, a charmed quill wrote on a paper all the spells she was casting. After an hour she finished and Harry looked over the parchment and nodded in content. Daphne knew a lot of Charms and Defense Spells, but what surprised him the most was her knowledge of Healing Spells. He had never thought about Healing Spells and it seemed Daphne had an affinity for Charms and Defense Spells. Of course, he hadn't seen how good she was at Potions, Ancient Runes and Arithmancy so he couldn't tell which branch of magic she was best at.

Daphne also had good control, but not good as Hermione, her being a muggle-born allowed her to have almost perfect magical control meaning Hermione could get the correct amount of magical power out for the spell.

"Good, you can correctly perform all the spells you have learned. You are good at Charms and Defense, but you also know a lot of Healing Spells. I have never seen anyone perform Healing Spells, except the basic ones, except Madam Pomfrey," Harry commented.

Daphne smiled and sat down on the ground. Continuously casting spells for an hour had taken a toll on her. Harry seeing this said, "I think this is enough for the day, I can start teaching you spells from tomorrow."

"Alright," said Daphne and got up, gave Harry a peck on his lips, and went out of the Room of Requirement. 5 minutes later, after some reading on Parselmagic Harry also left the Room of Requirements back to the Gryffindor common room.

There he met Ron who informed him about Hermione and said to him, "You should talk to Hermione, she has been worried for you all summer and wanted some reassurance from you that you are fine. And you changing after staying at Hogwarts did nothing good for your friendship with her."

After learning where Hermione was Harry left for Hogwarts Ground. There he saw Hermione sitting on the bench looking far into the horizon filled with clouds.

Harry sat down right next to her and said, "It seems a thunderstorm will be hitting Hogwarts soon enough."

"It will," Hermione said.

"Do you know humans are just like the sky," Harry said. Seeing her interest bubble up he continued, "At times they are happy, just like the sun shining. Angry just like the thunderstorms that come and sad just like clouds blocking the sun shining."

"Voldemort once told me that emotions are the weakest points of a human. And if I leave them behind, I would go on to become a powerful wizard. He offered to train me," told Harry.

Hermione's eyes widened in shock and she gasped before she asked, "Is that why you are so indifferent because Voldemort told you emotions make you weak?"

Harry chuckled and said, "No. While I think that in some cases emotions do make you weak like doing something in anger. Emotions as a whole make you powerful. A lot of powerful magic is based on emotions. Take the Patronus Charms as an example. You need very powerful happy emotions to perform it. As much as Voldemort says he has no emotions he lies. He does and will have them forever. No human can ever lose their emotions or make them go away. They can bury them deep inside, but never get rid of them."

"I thought if I buried my emotions, I could be better, but as it turns out it's the opposite. I am sorry Hermione," Harry confessed.

Hermione turned around and launched into Harry hugging him and crying her eyes out. Harry wrapped his arms around her and started patting her shoulder.

"You know I was worried about you all summer and when we finally met you became a jerk," she said as she punched him lightly.

He chuckled and said, "I know I was a jerk, sorry for that."

"Why did you be that?" she asked looking up at him.

Harry sighed and looked at the clouds looming over Hogwarts which were about to cause a thunderstorm any second and said, "I thought that if I pushed you guys away, I would be able to protect you better. I thought if you didn't be with me, you would be targeted less by Voldemort and his Death Eaters."

"Harry don't push us away. You are getting stronger magically and physically every day and you will be able to protect us. As for the Death Eaters targeting us, they will always if you are our friends or not. And if you wish to protect us don't tell us the things the secrets Dumbledore tells you about Voldemort or his Death Eaters," spoke Hermione in a soft tone.

Harry chuckles and said, "As usual you are right, Hermione. Now let's go in shall we, you don't want to get a cold, do you?"

"But you have to explain the theories you learn alright, Harry," said Hermione in a bossy tone, Harry looking at it laughed and wheezed out, "Fine."

Hermione nodded in contentment and both friends got up, finally reconnected, and became friends once more.

X

Friday had come, the day Harry would leave Hogwarts for 3 days and 2 nights to train with Gellert Grindelwald. Harry had explained to Ron and Hermione about him going to train from Friday morning till Sunday night. He had also introduced Daphne to Ron and Hermione, Ron had a little grudge and gave her a cold shoulder for her being a Slytherin, but Hermione was happy to be introduced to her and wanted to become friends with her.

Harry and Daphne had shared some of their plans for the future, Daphne wanted to become a Potion's Mistress or an Unspeakable. When he asked about becoming a medic, she said that she didn't want to become a Medic and do that as her profession for her life.

Her family did business in Potions, so she would become one if she wanted, but would rather become an Unspeakable because the Unspeakables were allowed to research the obscure arts and explore magic as a whole.

When Harry was asked, he said he wanted to become an Unspeakable, but now wasn't that sure and wanted to help the Wizarding World as a whole.

Harry entered, the headmaster's office at 6 pm sharp. Albus was working on some school's business and seeing Harry he said, "Welcome, Harry. I assume you are here to go to your lessons with Gellert."

Harry nodded and Albus continued, "And I assume you have had breakfast in the kitchens?"

"Yes sir, I have," Harry replied.

"Well then, I guess you are ready. I'll see you to the outside of the Hogwarts Grounds," said Albus.

"But, sir shouldn't you come with me, Gellert could take a look at your cursed hand?" asked Harry in worry.

"I would, but I have too much work to do, and I wouldn't be a good headmaster would I if I left the school in its first week, now, would I?" asked Albus rhetorically with a familiar twinkle in his blue eyes.

Harry sighed, he knew he would not win this battle with Albus and said, "No you would not."

The twinkling in Albus's eyes brightened and he said, "Wonderful, now let's go, shall we?"

Harry nodded and both of them headed out of the room towards the Hogwarts Grounds where the wards no longer took effect. When they reached there, Albus asked, "You know where the castle/prison is?"

Harry nodded and said, "I can Apparate there."

"Good, good! Now go!" Albus said as his face lost all signs of mirth, mischievousness, and happiness. Harry's face too lost all expression and he Apparated out of the boundaries of Hogwarts and to the Nurmengard Castle.

With a pop, Harry appeared on the outskirts of Nurmengard. Casting a Heating Charm, Harry started to walk towards the castle. After walking 10 flights of stairs Harry reached the top of the castle.

There he saw a fresh Gellert Grindelwald wearing his signature clothes, hair combed, shaved, and a person who had taken a bath looking out of the balcony towards the mountains in front of him.

"Ah Harry, I was waiting for you," said Gellert. Instantly Gellert turned around and quickly shot a spell at Harry.

Harry brought a Protego in front of him, which stopped the Stunning Spells right in its track.

"Ah fast reflexes, good good," Gellert commented.

As soon as he said that, Gellert started shooting spells at Harry. Harry placed a variant of the Protego, which once made would no longer need any Magical Power to maintain, stay in a place, allowing Harry to do other spells, and instead of cracking or being destroyed to powerful spells, it will let them phase through it. This shield was created by Albus during his Mastery of Charms which he had taught to Harry.

Gellert seeing that shield pop-up said, "Ah, so Albus taught you that did he?" before firing spells once more. The spells that went through the shield would be redirected by Harry, virtually creating an invincible defense. But, against long-range attacks like the Fiendfyre, Harry would not be able to redirect it.

Seeing none of his attacks hit Harry, Gellert transfigured some of the rocks that had blown up, into wolves made of rocks which he animated to attack Harry while sending some powerful spells. Harry had no choice and dodged the spells, thus leaving the shied area, and shot the Exploding Charm at the 3 wolves.

During the battle, Harry had moved in front of the balcony while Gellert had moved in front of the door room. When Harry dodged the spell and destroyed the rock wolves, Gellert shot the Knockback Jinx at him, which hit him square in the chest and Harry flew out of the window down to the ground.

As Harry was nearing the ground he roared, "Arresto Momentum." Due to the spell, Harry slowed down before he hit the ground and lightly landed on the ground.

A curse was fired at him, which Harry blocked. Harry looked up to see, Gellert slowly floating toward the ground.

"Now that we have some more ground, I can use some of my other spells," Gellert said chuckling while landing on the ground.

As he touched the ground Harry started shooting, chains of spells at Gellert, each chain had curses, jinxes, and charms combined in a specific way allowing him to not waste any time in hand movement when moving to another spell.

Gellert was either dodging or redirecting Harry's attacks and the Cutting Curse even hit Gellert on his chest cutting his clothes and leaving a cut on him. Seeing this Gellert laughed and send a shockwave of pure magic knocking Harry down to the ground.

This gave Gellert enough time to cast his spell. As Harry was getting up, he heard Gellert whisper, "Protego Diabolica." When Harry heard this, he felt fear. Albus had told him about this spell and the horrors it caused. The only way to beat this spell was to either fight fire by fire or to have a Sorcerer use the power of the Finite spell of some people and direct the flames to destroy the flames created by Protego Diabolica.

As Gellert incanted his spell, blue flames began to form around him in a circle, which expanded to become 3 big demons of blue flames. Harry was shocked to see such big constructs and wondered how Gellert was in his prime. As the beasts roared Harry snapped out of his stupor, took a big breath, and roared, "Maledictus Ignis Resurget."

Torrents of cursed fire shot off Harry's wand. This fire was Fiendfyre and Gellert was shocked to see it. He thought Harry would give up, but he had something up his sleeve. Gellert had never heard of a 16-year-old performing Fiendfyre, one of the darkest and most ancient spells in existence.

The fire formed into 3 huge fire constructs, unlike Gellert's they were all different, one of them was a Hebridean Black Dragon, a Basilisk, and a Phoenix. As those constructs formed their wills smashed against Harry's will.

Now that Harry had used Fiendfyre for some time and had learned Occlumency and Legilimency he was able to defeat them without that much trouble or as much exhaustion as he had before.

The fire constructs roared at each other and both wizards raised their wands and commanded their respective beasts to attack the others. As Gellert's fire demons attacked Harry's, Harry felt the strain on his mind.

The blue fire was destroying his own. Harry waved his wand and commanded the Phoenix to help the Basilisk, while the Hebridean Black Dragon was distracting the other two beasts and they were chasing after it.

The Basilisk and Phoenix wrapped themselves around the demon and destroyed him. Gellert smiled and waved his wand making one of the chasing demons go after the Basilisk and Phoenix. Harry saw this and made the Basilisk and Phoenix do the same they did with the previous demon while making the Hebridean Black Dragon strangle the demon using his tail, and wrap his wings around the body of the demon.

When the demon was fully covered, Harry waved his wands and turned his construct into the fire, which consumed the demon made by blue fire and destroyed it. By this time, the Basilisk and Phoenix had destroyed the final demon.

What was left of the blue demons was a small flame in front of Gellert's feet. Harry smiled; he had destroyed the beasts. Gellert chuckled and laughed and swished his wand upwards, making the fire grow.

Harry's eyes widened, but before he could do anything, Gellert twirled his wand making a circular border made out of the blue fire. Once more Gellert swished his wand upwards and the fire started to grow.

Harry quickly sprang into action, he too swished his wand upwards, making his constructs fly up. But the blue fire was faster than the Basilisk and Phoenix, the blue fire destroyed the constructs, and Harry screamed in pain.

He felt the strain on his mind. The Hebridean Black Dragon flew upwards and the fire chased after him, from all sides. Unfortunately for Harry, the Hebridean Black Dragon was too slow and the fire went above him, wrapped itself around the Hebridean Black Dragon, and brought him down, crushing him.

As the beast got destroyed, Harry roared in pain, he felt the strain on his head. His construct was being destroyed. Excruciating pain in his head, finally after the Hebridean Black Dragon had been destroyed and Gellert had vanished his blue flames, it stopped, the pain stopped but Harry's head was still ringing.

Gellert flew over to him and caught him before he fell to the ground and said, "Sleep, you did a good job," smiling he waved his wand in front of Harry's face and Harry fell into a deep sleep.

Harry groaned as he woke up, one hand on his hand and the other beside him on the bed. He looked around and saw bandages on his chest and no one there. Remembering where he was, Harry instantly stood up from the bed and walked over to the only door he saw.

He opened the door, to see a larger room, with a desk and a window pointing towards the mountains. It looked like the Living Room1. Another door opened and Gellert walked.

Seeing him he said, "Ah so the sleeping beauty has awakened."

Harry stayed quiet; he did not know how to respond to that. Not getting any response from Harry, Gellert continued, "Instead of brooding like one of those purebloods when they lose to a half-blood muggleborns, you should be proud. If someone told me in my prime that, a 16-year-old would battle me and almost be able to singlehandedly stop Protego Diabolica, I would've laughed in their face. And I know that after I destroyed your Fiendfyre constructs you would have been able to still fight me."

"Thanks, I guess," said Harry.

"Why so gloomy, Harry, after I am done with you, you will be able to battle Voldemort and much more," said Gellert.

Harry seemed to have gone into a trance burst open and roared, "But why ME? Why can't it be you guys, Gellert you are as powerful if not more powerful than Voldemort and the same can be said for Albus."

Gellert looked at, him as Harry awaited an answer and then said, "Because we are weak and because of a prophecy made about you."

"Huh?" was Harry's intelligent reply. "What do you mean you are weak? You and Albus can manipulate magic on a level no average witch or wizard can do. How are you two weak?"

"Harry, you must understand that there were witches and wizard more powerful than us in the Old Times, Merlin, Morgana, Herpo the Foul, Emeric the Evil and the one that defeated them are just some of them. To them, we are the same level one them if not a tad bit weaker. Harry, do you know why Merlin is praised and thought of as a god?" explained and asked Gellert.

When Harry shook his head, Gellert continued, "One reason is that he is the founder of the Wizarding Europe you see right now. Without him, our world would different. He laid the foundations of our world. The other reason is, lost time and I learned it in my quest to find the Hallows, more about them later. Merlin fought Morgana, the greatest Dark Witch/Wizard of all time. But Merlin also protected the Earth from other evils. Harry have you ever wondered that if we have magic then there would be someone who gave us this magic."

Harry cut Gellert and questioned, "So wait this being who gave us magic, created other beings?"

"Yes, some of them are the magical beasts you see every day, Hippogriffs, Thestral, etc. But this being also created other and more powerful races. These races are so powerful that they can create galaxies. Even I, who researched them extensively, could not find out about the full extent of their powers. Harry this being could have created aliens and more," explained Gellert.

"But, where does Merlin come into this?" asked Harry.

"To tell you this, I need to tell you how Magic Castors are identified. A normal person who can use magic is a witch/wizard. After that comes a Mage, then a High Mage. Sorcerer comes next with Battle Mage. Grand Sorcerer is after that with the War Mage next to it and Grand Mage being more powerful than a War Mage. Finally, the most powerful rank is the Supreme Sorcerer" told Gellert.

"There has never been a Supreme Sorcerer and no these ranks are not decided by the Ministry of Magic, but by Magic itself. Magic has different marks, regarding what you are, you can also drop down. For example, Albus and I, in our prime were War Mages, but now we are Grand Sorcerers. In all of history there has only been one person who was close to becoming a Supreme Sorcerer, Myrddin Emrys or more commonly known as Merlin," said Gellert.

"So, when Merlin died, he was a Grand Mage, while being very close to being a Supreme Sorcerer?" asked Harry.

"Yes, now do you know how he died?" asked Gellert. When he received a shake of the head from Harry he continued, "After researching in many countries, I found that Merlin defeated Morgana. But he didn't die because of that, as many people think. He died because he knew about these races. And he thought that they might pose a threat to Earth as a whole. So, with his life, he performed a spell making a force field around Earth protecting it. The spell was supposed to be done when he became the Supreme Sorcerer, but for some reason, he performed it before he became one and as result, he died."

"All right, but how does it relate to me fighting Voldemort?" asked Harry.

"Aside from the prophecy, I don't know. Albus and I want you to become the Supreme Sorcerer. There are 2 reasons, 1 the force field needs to be recharged and no one has the potential to become a Supreme Sorcerer, only you do. Albus has been looking for someone with the potential for someone to become one and has finally found him. 2 you might be the only one with the power to face these other beings," said Gellert.

"But why might I be the best person to face these beings?" asked Harry, calmed and cooled down after getting his answer.

Gellert sighed and cursed Albus for making him tell Harry everything, and prepared to tell another one of his secrets and said, "Because your family has interacted with one of these beings."

"Huh?" was Harry's intelligent reply and question.

"Let me start from the beginning," said Gellert and paused before starting once more. "In the Tales of Beedle the Bard, there is a story about 3 brothers named The Tale of the Three Stories. You can read the story later, but long story short the story is about three brothers who, while traveling together, reach a treacherous river. They make a magical bridge over the river wherein just as they cross, they meet the personification of Death, who is angry for losing three potential victims. He pretends to be impressed by them and grants each a gift as a reward, hoping to use each gift to bring about their eventual demise. The oldest brother asks for an unbeatable dueling wand, so Death gives him the Elder Wand. The middle brother asks for the ability to resurrect the dead to humiliate Death further, so Death gives him the Resurrection Stone. The youngest brother, a humbler man, does not trust Death and asks for a way to stop Death from following him, so Death reluctantly gives him his Cloak of Invisibility."

Gellert stopped here for Harry to let everything in and understand and then continued, "Afterward, the brothers go their separate ways. The oldest brother resolves a previous qualm by using the wand to kill the man with whom he quarreled, but his bragging about the wand's incredible power results in him getting robbed of it in his sleep, with the thief to slitting his throat and allowing Death to claim him. The middle brother resolves a previous loss by using the stone to bring back the woman to whom he wanted to be married, but she is revealed to be non-corporeal and full of sorrow for being back in the mortal world; in grief, he commits suicide to properly be with her and allows Death to claim him. However, Death never manages to find the youngest brother, as he stays hidden under the invisibility cloak. Many years later, the brother removes his cloak and gives it to his son. Content with the life he has lived, he greets Death as an old friend and equal."

Once again Gellert paused for Harry to understand everything and to let the tale sink in. After a minute of quietness, Gellert started once more, "These Hallows exist. The last daughter of the Peverell family married into another pureblood family by the name of Potter."

Harry's eyes widened in shock and he asked, "So, the Invisibility Cloak I possess is the youngest brother's cloak?"

Gellert nodded and said, "Yes you possess Ignotus's Cloak. The cloak was your father's, most cloaks last 5 to 8 years and your father used it in Hogwarts. Do you know why it lasted so long? It's because the cloak is Death's. Ignotus's Cloak of Invisibility."

"Is that why Albus borrowed it from my father? Because he thought it was the Cloak of Invisibility?" asked Harry.

When Gellert nodded Harry asked another question, "Then the other 2 Hallows exist as well?"

"Yes, they do exist. I was a master of one of the Hallows, the Deathstick or The Elder Wand. But, when Albus dueled me, he took it from and won the wand's allegiance, and now he possesses the wand," said Gellert.

Harry's eyes widened and he said, "And the ring?"

Gellert chuckled and said, "Remember when you and Albus went to find Slytherin's Ring and thought that was the Horcrux?"

Harry nodded and Gellert said, "Do you know why Albus put it on? He put it on because he saw the crest of the Peverells and knew that inside the ring there was the Resurrection Stone."

Harry's eyes widened and now it made more sense and then he asked, "Does this mean Voldemort has the Resurrection Stone?"

"He does, but it does not mean he knows what it is and what he can do with it," replied Gellert.

"So, what is Death?" asked Harry.

"I do not know. The only ones who could have known would be the Peverell brothers. But, the Guild of Necromancy might also have a lot of information about this. After all, it is there where I got the information about the different beings and the Magic Shield around Earth," said Gellert.

Seeing Harry in a thinking state he said, "Take your time to understand and think about everything we have discussed here today. I will be awaiting your answer by evening." With that Gellert walked out of the room.
