Chapter 18
Meeting the Grandparents
Reiner and the others left for the conflict the next day, but Evelyn refused to see Reiner off. She was still mad at him for his words the night before. Evelyn wanted a good night alone with him and it ended badly. Even Pieck had said he crossed a line and should of told her. She had hugged Galliard goodbye when he came to get Pieck.
Evelyn rolled over in bed as her alarm went off for her nightshift. She wore one of Reiner's shirts. The smell of him seemed to calm her being mad. She had slept in the bed that she shared with Reiner. She sighed. She was starting to regret not working it out with him before he left. He had left Evelyn her favorite flowers on the table when she came home after Reiner had left. Evelyn pulled on her clothes for the day and headed downstairs to make coffee and get something to eat. The house was to quiet. Evelyn wondered what Reinre would think of getting a cat just to keep her company. Evelyn poured a cup of coffee and took a sip. She had a few hours before her first night shift.
A knock on the door. Evelyn wondered who it was. The kids were not coming over today so she could sleep and the others were gone. Evely headed to the door and open it. An old couple was standing in the doorway. The woman seemed to tear up at the sight of Evelyn. Evelyn gripped her mug
"Can I help you?" Evelyn asked. The man took off his hat.
"Evelyn Jaeger?" The man asked.
"I am." Evelyn said.
"We're your grandparents." The woman said. Evelyn felt the mug slip from her hand and the mug shattered as it hit the floor.
The three sat at the kitchen table after Evelyn made coffee for them all. They sat in a cofortable silence. Evelyn takes a sip from her mug. She wished this would happen when Reiner was here, but he had left.
'Karma is a bitch.' Evelyn thought as she sipped her coffee.
"You turned into a.." Mr. Jaeger started.
"Cut the crap. What are you two doing here?" Evelyn said, setting down her coffee.
"We just wanted to see our grandchild." Mrs. Jaeger said. Evelyn laughed. The two looked at her like she was crazy.
"I been here two years and you decide now of all times to visit me. I been havign a bad day since yesterday and I work tonight." Evelyn said. She would have been happier if Reiner was here when they showed up. Probably Zeke put them up to it. She wouldnt't doubt it.
"You don't talk to your grandmother like that." Mr. Jaeger growled.
"Or what? You two are complete strangers to me. I didn't even know I had a half brother or grandparents when I came to Marley. Father never mentioned any of you. You don't care that you have a grandson and granddaugther till now. Reiner asked me if I wanted to meet you two, but I refused. Zeke put you up to this, didn't he." Evelyn said, taking her mug with her finger. Mr. and Mrs. Jaeger shared looks, but didn't say anything. "Your silence tells me you don't." Evelyn took a long sip of her drink.
"We loved your father, Evelyn. He did somethings that got him shipped to the Island of Devils." Mrs. Jaeger said.
"Do you know what I went through? What me and my brother went through. We watched our home be taken by Titans and our own mother eaten by a Titan. Our father passed the Founding Titan and Attack Titan to my brother. I've seen my friends eaten and killed by Titans. We lived and survived on hell on earth with not knowing that there was a country sending the Titans to us. So don't go telling me you cared." Evelyn said. She got up and head for the door. "You stayed your welcome and I have to get ready for work." The Grandparents followed and Evelyn opened the door.
"You don't have a future here and being in love with one of the nine is not a future when his time is up." Mr. Jaeger said. Evelyn looked at the man that was her grandfather.
"I'll be back with my friends and brother when time is up with Reiner. I know I got no future with him, but I can enjoy the time I have with him till he transfers his titan." Evelyn said.
"If you need anything, we.." Mrs. Jaeger started.
"I don't want anything from you. Like I said your complete strangers to me. Thank you for coming." Evelyn said, holding the door open wider. THe Jaegers left and Evelyn closed the door. She slid down the door and wrapped her arms around her legs and burried her face in her knees.
'Why does Zeke do this to me? He knew I wished not to see them and yet he told them to visit.' Evelyn thought as she hugged her legs.
