Chapter 1
Long ago, a drow came to the surface. He looked out on the world with a smile and a
frown. Now, he is smiling once more.
She saw him out of the corner of her eye. 'What was that?' she wondered aloud. 'Was that
what I think it was?' The figure heard her and was intrigued, but kept on strolling.
Katherine was a beauty. She was wearing a tight blouse with a very deep neckline. Her mini
skirt was tan and even though it was a mini, there was a slit up the side. Katherine turned
around and kept shopping trying to dismiss what she thought she saw. St. Gretchen's was
wonderful, but she would have rather gone to Sundabar or Ten-Towns.
Nobody had even heard of St. Gretchen's before. She was wandering in and out of shops
when all the sudden she bumped into someone. She muttered sorry under her breath. But
then she looked up. It was him! That mysterious figure she saw earlier. She gasped.
It was a drow! She had of course heard of Drizzt. His reputation preceded him. She tried to
talk, but found she couldn't. She could barely breathe. When she left the shop,
he was there waiting to talk to her. She was still stunned from their first encounter a few
minutes ago. She wondered what he wanted. "Hello," was all he said. She nodded to show
acknowledgement. He waited for a moment, and then said, "Could I walk you home?"
Katherine blushed furiously. She asked him if he knew the way and was quite surprised to
find he did. They walked down a country road for a bit. The day was quite beautiful. And
so quiet, no one was out. He even helped her carry some of her things. They sat under a
tree to rest for a minute and she looked up into his eyes. This drow's eyes were stunning.
Pure silver.
She thought of her own eyesas bland. She much preferred his. But then she thought 'Wait
a minute,
Drizzt's eyes are purple.' She asked him who he was as they strolled down the empty dirt
path towards her house. "My name is Salfaen" And he shook his hair out of his hood and
pulled out a knife.
