I'm feeling a million times better by morning, but I keep my oxygen on to be safe. While I don't get morning sex, Edward does make me breakfast in bed before we eventually start to get dressed and head downstairs. The back windows of the cabin show snow fell, and it glistens on his deck. I didn't get my white Christmas, sadly, but it's snowed twice since. Unfortunately, the timing isn't great this time.
I'm a terrible fucking driver in snow.
"Shit," I curse.
"What's wrong?" he asks. "I thought you loved snow."
"Not when I have to drive in it." I sigh. "Thank God, I have the Jeep. I'm sure it'll handle well. It's already saved me from the rain once."
"Are you sure? I can drive you."
I shake my head. "I can handle it. I'll call you when I get home."
I step into his arms and raise up on my toes to meet his lips. "Please do," he says as we part. "I love you, beautiful girl."
"I love you too."
We kiss once more before he helps me into my coat. The snow is only about six inches deep, but it feels like twenty as I walk through it. I can't wait to be home and in front of the fire. The Jeep starts up and handles well as I pull around and head down Edward's driveway, but I'm still white-knuckling the steering wheel.
Thankfully, I manage to get on the main road, which had been plowed, and lighten up a little. Before I can pull into the driveway, my phone rings, and it's Emmett.
"Bella, where are you?"
He sounds worried, and it freaks me out. "Almost home. Why?"
"I was just worried about you driving in the snow. I've already had three accidents come in this morning. Would you mind staying home today? They're calling for more snow this afternoon, and I don't want you out in it."
I smile to myself as I roll my eyes. His worry is endearing but unnecessary. "I'll stay in, Em. You don't need to worry about me though. The Jeep handled like a pro."
"Good, but still, it could get nasty. Depending on how it goes, I might be late."
I pull into the driveway and put the Jeep in park. "I guess I'll just spend the day baking. I'm home now."
"Okay; love you."
"Love you too. Bye."
I hang up and open the door, stepping onto the freshly fallen snow. As I make my way to the door, my shoes lose traction, and I start to fall, crashing down on my butt with a thud. Okay, that hurt. Thankfully, I think I'm okay, but the wind is knocked right out of me, and it takes me a second to get my bearings.
I love to look at snow but, clearly, being out in it isn't the best for me.
I carefully get up, and aside from a dull ache in my butt, I'm fine, so I head inside and call Edward and feed Hamilton—who's waiting for me by the door. I quickly drop my bag and pick him up, scratching behind his ear.
"Hi, baby boy. Did you miss me?"
He meows, and I take that as a yes before taking him upstairs for breakfast. I leave dry food down, but he prefers the wet stuff. By the time I'm done and call Edward, he answers worriedly, but I tell him I'm home safe and don't mention the fall.
Spending the afternoon baking, I keep myself occupied and enjoy the alone time. Emmett's right about being late, but he makes it home a little after eight, and I have dinner ready. He looks exhausted as he settles onto the stool at the counter.
"I'm guessing it stayed busy?"
He nods as I pass him a beer and go back to stirring the fettuccine and alfredo sauce. "Accidents and falls—a fuckton of them. How was your day?"
"Boring. I made some banana bread and a batch of chocolate cupcakes. Also, Edward said he'd come to Jared's birthday. You're fine with it, right?"
"Yeah, Bells. We're on decent terms now."
I smile, spreading the food between our bowls. "It means a lot to me that you came around so soon. I don't want anything to come between us."
He shakes his head. "Nothing will. This looks great. Thank you."
"You're welcome, Em."
Our evening is boring, and we binge the fourth season of Stranger Things and snack on my banana bread, which was our mother's recipe. I don't know how I would have handled it if he didn't come around so soon, but I'm thankful he did.
Thanks to May, Nole, Fran, Brier, and Meg for prereading and Sally for Beta'ing.
