Chapter 95
Edward could have frozen in fear when he realized that Victoria had gotten a hold of Bella. He was barely functioning beyond his thoughts screaming "No" and "Not her. Not Bella" over and over but he was aware of Riley approaching.
Victoria's plan was simple but effective. She had manipulated Riley to believe that he and Bella were the enemy and that the surest way for the two of them to live peaceful lives going forward was to attack and eliminate. But she didn't want Riley to survive. She only wanted him to distract Edward long enough for her to kill Bella.
Naturally, it would have been easier if Bella had still been human, but a newborn had few skills in fighting beyond the instinct of using their enhanced strength. The only thing speaking in Bella's advantage was that she was already knowledgeable of vampire nature and she knew she couldn't act like a regular newborn.
And then there was the fact that ever since Victoria had cornered them in the hallway, he'd been able to read Bella's thoughts for some inexplicable reason he couldn't yet understand. He could still read them from the other side of the lake and he saw Victoria through her eyes.
Riley snarled at him as he attempted the same move as Victoria, but he was as predictable as any untrained newborn. Edward had seen enough fights in Jasper's memories to know the difference, and he knew, even before the fight had begun, that it would be over quickly. Riley didn't know how to control his thoughts and Edward had him down and pressed to the ground before the younger vampire had barely registered what had happened.
"I wish it didn't have to be this way, Riley," he said. "I wish I didn't have to kill you because of her lies. I'm only doing this to protect the woman I love."
"Then we have that in common," Riley said through gritted teeth and tried to move out from under Edward's hands, but his head was in a death grip and any movement was impossible unless he wanted to decapitate himself.
"If it gives you peace in death to believe she loves you, I won't take that away," Edward said and let out a sigh before he tore Riley's head off clean and tossed it far away from his body. He would have to burn him later, but he had to help Bella first.
A scream he immediately identified as Bella's made him turn around, terrified of what he would see on the other side of the frozen landscape.
A/N:
We knew Riley would be an easy win for Edward, but now he knows Bella's injured :-X
