Chapter 96

Having her arm torn off from the shoulder was excruciatingly painful and Bella lost focus for moment as she collapsed onto the ice and tried to crawl away from Victoria. She wasn't a skilled enough fighter to take her on with two arms, much less one.

"Edward," she breathed out pleadingly and raised her head to look in his direction and their eyes met. He had already taken care of Riley and he was now staring at her with a terrified, wide-eyed look, until he shifted and turned to Victoria. The dark amber of his irises morphed into black onyx as he was filled with absolute hatred.

"Playtime's over." Victoria was so emerged in her own revenge, she didn't even appear to notice as Edward started running, his feet thundering against the ice with such force Bella could feel the vibration under her hand and it was a miracle it didn't crack.

"Bella!" Kate called out as she came from the battle with the others. She saw that Bella was injured and started toward her to give whatever aid she could, and it distracted Victoria, causing her to look away from Bella for a second. It was all it took for Edward to collide with her and plow her into the snow.

Kate reached Bella and looked at the wound where her arm used to be connected to her shoulder. "It will attach again, but it'll be a bitch to heal," she said and attempted a smile, but her words were mostly drowned out by Edward's enraged roar as he lifted Victoria in the air by her throat.

"It's pathetic how you think this is going to avenge James' death," he spit out. "You've spent all of this time and energy into this moment and now you're going to die a meaningless death, just like he did. For a sad excuse of a man who didn't even love you."

She snarled in response to his cutting statements, but his grip was too tight for her to get any real words out.

He bent his elbow and lowered her down until they were almost face-to-face. "Wherever you're going, he won't be there waiting. All you've accomplished is to become the clingy girlfriend of convenience he couldn't get rid of."

Bella couldn't look away as he sank his teeth into her throat and tore out a huge chunk of her flesh and then methodically began to dismember the last of their nightmare. A sharp sting caused Bella to hiss as Kate held her severed arm against her open wound.

Slowly, it started to uncomfortably knit itself back together, but she had no use for it while it healed and it hang limply at her side. Kate used her belt to keep it in place, and Bella gave her an appreciative smile.

"Thank you. Is everyone okay?"

Kate nodded. "We're all fine. Only a few scars. But we got the easier ones so don't feel bad about this." She gestured toward her arm.

"Bella?"

She looked up at Edward when he softly spoke her name. He held out his hand to help her get back up on her feet and she gratefully accepted it.

"You have more right than anyone to finish this," he said and held up a lighter.

Bella took it and their eyes met. His were filled with uncertainty, most likely wondering what she thought of him now that she'd witnessed how murderous he could be.

"Nothing will ever change how much I love you, Edward Cullen," she said and kissed him firmly on the lips. Then she passed him to approach the pile that used to be Victoria. Without hesitating, she ignited the lighter and tossed it so her clothes would catch the flame and help engulf her.

As the orange-flaming locks that had been a permanent feature in Bella's fears for months scrunched up and turned black, she finally felt a weight lift from her heart.
