Chapter 97

"You need to feed for it to heal properly," Jasper said over the phone. Not so surprisingly, he had more experience with healing battle injuries than Carlisle. "Naturally, human blood would be the fastest, but I'd say a large predator should suffice well enough."

"At what time will you arrive?" Edward asked and Alice took over the phone.

"We're less than half an hour away. I'm so sorry, Edward. I trusted my visions of Victoria too much. She must've somehow known about the holes in them and—"

"Alice, it's fine. I don't blame you," he hurried to reassure her. "She was a slippery vampire, and none of us could have predicted she was following us that closely. We're all fine. Bella's healing and the rest of us only have minor injuries."

"Speak for yourself," Eleazar said but chuckled as he let Carmen fuzz over the multiple bite marks he'd received when several of the newborns had attacked him at once in hopes of incapacitating the one member with considerable fight training. They'd clearly failed, but he didn't walk away completely unscathed.

Laurent had lost a finger, and Kate had a permanent scar over her right eyebrow where a tooth had nicked her, but the others weren't hurt in a way that would be visible even to vampire eyes.

"Still," Alice insisted. "I'll understand if you won't want to talk to me for the next fifty years or so."

Bella snorted in disbelief. "And how is that supposed to work when you plan our wedding?"

It was silent on the other end for a second, and Edward laughed.

"Wow, I think you just achieved the impossible and surprised the pixie," he said and the next second, Alice let out a very high-pitched squeal, but Bella immediately felt she had to rein her in.

"Take it easy, Alice. It won't be now, but definitely in the next few years. I thought you already knew that."

"I knew it would happen after your change, but that means the visions I've had could be decades from now," she said and then she was off the phone as she started spinning plans that Bella knew she'd insist to have some control over.

"I'm gonna take Bella hunting so she can get the blood she needs," Edward said. "We probably won't be back before you arrive."

"Of course," Carlisle said, being the one who'd taken over the phone. "We'll see you in a couple of hours." They hung up and Edward scooped up Bella in his arms.

"I can still use my legs, you know," she pointed out, but smiled anyway.

He shrugged. "I know, but humor me. I enjoy taking care of you when I can."

She shook her head and planted a kiss on his cheek. "Fine. You can carry me there, but I'm using my own legs when we run back, okay?"

"Deal."

A/N:

This Bella knows how to assert her boundaries with Alice! No more being a pushover :D

And Edward's newfound happy playfulness continues! No self-hate because she was injured here. He knows she's fine and that she'll make a full recovery.

The mind-reading thing will be addressed in the epilogue, but there's ooooooone more chapter before then.

Stay Awesome until tomorrow!
