Chapter 98

It was a strange sensation to feel breathless without actually being breathless, but it was exactly how Bella felt when she shifted her weight off Edward and stretched out on the ground next to him.

Bella's arm had, after some overzealous feeding, fully reattached itself, but a jagged scar just slightly lighter than the rest of her skin remained going all the way around. She knew that, like Jasper's bitemarks, the scar would be almost invisible to human eyes, but every vampire who ever saw it would know what she'd been through and that she'd survived it.

A small part of her naturally felt upset that she already had an imperfection marring her features before she'd even finished her first twenty-four hours in her new body, but when Edward heard the errant thought—they still didn't know how he was suddenly able to read her mind—he took it upon himself to remind her how perfect she was to him.

He dedicated hours to worshiping her body, kissing every inch of her skin and telling her why that particular patch was perfect. His ministrations of her body and the open channel he had to her mind was the most powerful foreplay they'd experienced, and it egged them on until everything culminated in what could only be cheesily described as fireworks.

Bella used her left hand—still a little stiff but slowly gaining back its use—to draw a pattern of circles on Edward's bare chest. They were lying naked on the ground, in the snow, but neither of them felt an incentive to move or get dressed just yet because they finally had all the time in the world. Nothing loomed over them. No pending doom or creeping dread.

"Tell me," Bella started and Edward was already laughing because not only could he hear the amused tone of her voice, but he'd already heard the thought as well. "Which one of the three do you prefer? Sex as a human with a vampire, sex as a vampire with a human, or sex as a vampire with a vampire." She grinned at him, and his response was to pull her closer so he could kiss her again, a seductive growl vibrating in his throat.

"Every time with you is an experience out of this world," he whispered against her lips, his sweet scent washing over her and reawakened her excitement. "But hearing your thoughts when I pleasure you was intoxicating. I never understood how mentally immersive orgasms are for women until that moment." He gave her another kiss. "Exhilarating."

"Do you think it's temporary?" she moaned as he moved down to her throat.

"I don't know. But for obviously selfish reasons, I hope not." He traced his nose down to her shoulder and stopped at the scar. "How does it feel now?"

"Almost back to normal. Talk about an eventful start to my new life."

Edward placed a kiss on the scar and gently nudged Bella onto her back with him on top. "With any luck, the rest of forever will be safe and boring," he said, but she shook her head in disagreement.

"Any single day spent with you could never be boring."
