As much as Bella and Edward love each other, they can't possibly understand what the other's life is like.
On Bella's 18th birthday, instead of a paper cut, a switch is about to make Forks even weirder.
How will Bella cope with suddenly being a 104-year-old mind-reading vampire in love with her singer? And how will Edward cope with being a human in love with a vampire?

Epilogue

"You're a shield."

"A what?"

Eleazar smiled at her. "A shield. You possess a gift of protection."

Bella grimaced in confusion. "How is that possible? Victoria almost killed me and I didn't have anything to protect me."

"It's not that kind of protection," he patiently explained. "From what I can sense and have gathered from what you and Edward told me, you protect yourself from unwanted mental intrusions. Since it manifested in you even as a human, that means you're powerful and your gift will most likely develop the more you learn about it. One day, you might even be able to project it outside yourself."

"So, the reason Edward couldn't read my thoughts directly after that change compared to now is...?"

"The change in itself is traumatic," Eleazar said, stating the obvious to every person in the room. "I reckon your body and mind was still in a state of shock at that point, instinctively protecting you from anything that could be deemed an attack. Edward is the one person you trust completely; physically, emotionally, and mentally. He makes you feel safe hence why it didn't take any effort on your part to let him in when you were in need of a way to communicate."

"I did notice a change in the emotional state between you two after you switched back," Jasper said. "I no longer sensed any insecurity or need to keep secrets, and now, everything between you is even more open. I've honestly never felt anything like it before, even between mated couples."

A warm, fuzzy feeling built within Bella from the knowledge that there was absolutely nothing unsaid between her and Edward. The switch had helped them to learn to communicate, but never had she thought it would benefit them on so many other levels as well.

"But what you're saying is that Bella can decide to close her mind off to me whenever she wishes," Edward said to clarify and Eleazar nodded.

"Yes. I'm quite certain it's entirely her choice and possibly one she'll make unconsciously. A very effective way to learn you're in the doghouse." Eleazar laughed and everyone else joined in with smiles and chuckles.

Bella turned her head to smile at Edward. "I like that. Makes me feel at least a little bit in control of my own mind."

"I'm just happy to know you trust and love me so much you'll let me in at least every now and then," he said.

The unusually large gathering of vampires quieted down and slowly processed everything that had happened in the last hours since Bella woke from the change, and they looked around at each other, silently communicating their thoughts and feelings.

"So what happens now?" It was Tanya who asked.

Alice giggled and grinned at her. "Only the future will tell."

Whatever happens to this version of Edward and Bella going forward could literally be anything, but since they didn't have a run-in with The Volturi, and there's no Renesmee, there will be no confrontation with them, and they'll live in peace … or at least until Aro gets too jealous of Carlisle ;-)
