She ran through the dark woods, her sense of safety far from her mind. She had to get away, away from his misunderstanding eyes, his judgments she knew he tried not to make. Kate knew that a person like Jack could never fully understand her, how could he, when she hid everything from him.

As she ran, not knowing her destination, she felt the familiar surges of guilt swarm over her, causing her to almost vomit up her demons. No matter how hard she tried to forget, it was always still there, as if part of her soul. She needed to escape.

Sawyer was almost asleep when he heard someone near his tent, his eyes blurred with sleep at the figure in the entrance and before he could even tell who it was, he felt lips crashing into his. It only took a second for him to recognize those lips, they were the only ones he thought of. "Hey Freckles you…" he wasn't able to finish his smart-ass remark when she climbed up on him and violently shoved her lips onto his again.

Sawyer recognized this kind of kiss and it had nothing to do with him, it was full of pain and anger, nothing like the soft one from the jungle. He wasn't about to object to kissing Kate until he felt the wetness on her cheeks.

"Kate."

The second she heard her name said seriously from his lips, she got off him and moved quickly to the door but Sawyer managed to grab her hand.

"Hey," he brought her chin up so her eyes met his, "What happened?"

Kate tried to pull away from him but he grabbed her other arm, pulling her closer to him. Slowly her eyes rose back to his, tears falling down, though he could see how hard she was trying to keep them back. His hand slowly rose to her face, brushing away one of the tears.

"Sawyer, don't," Kate managed to choke out. She didn't know why she had come here, her feet had simply lead her to here, to him. Kate wasn't sure if it was because she felt more alike Sawyer or if it was because she thought he wouldn't ask questions. Here he was though, saying her name seriously, looking at her as if he cared. "Let me go."

He only had her by one arm, not even in a tight grip, his other hand still on her face. "Tell me," he said simply.

She felt the sobs well up inside her and despite her attempts, one escaped out of her mouth, another following and she felt strong arms surround her.

He'd never been much for letting girls cry on his shoulder, unless it was advantageous for him but this was different, this felt different, she was different. For the first time in as long as he could remember, all he wanted was to protect her, for her to stop crying. He wished he could take away everything bad in her life.

Even after the sobbing had stopped, Kate felt reluctant to leave Sawyer's arms, this man that she most of the time viewed as a jerk, that she wanted to be as far away from as possible.

"Stay," he whispered into her hair.

She was surprised again, by how badly she wanted to, despite all rational reasons not to.

He ran his hand over her hair, still holding her tightly to him, "Just tonight." He pulled away from her a bit, his arrogant smile back on his face, "I promise to be a perfect gentleman."

Kate smiled up at him and kissed him softly on the cheek and then turned to leave. "Thanks Sawyer."

He smiled back at her with understanding eyes, "My pleasure."
