PART THREE-Until we see each other again

-5 years later-

"I brought us food!" Mercedes entered the apartment with two Thai boxes in her arms and put them on the kitchen table.

Nothing.

"Sam?"

Still nothing. She furrowed her eyebrows and slowly entered the living room. And – she should have known that the guy was glued in front of the TV, watching a football game. She rolled her eyes. Men were all the same.

Mercedes leaned down and shortly pecked him on the cheek. "I'm home, babe."

Startled, he turned around. "Huh, I didn't hear you coming in."

"Of course, you didn't. I'm not as interesting as football."

Sam laughed and ruffled her hair. "We both know that this is far from the truth."

"Stop messing with my hair, idiot. I have a meeting in five minutes." Mercedes tried to fix her hair with the mirror in front of her. After all these years of trying all kinds of weaves and wigs, she had decided to wear a short bob.

The male blonde frowned at her questioningly. "What meeting?"

But she had already walked to her homeoffice and shut the door behind her. On her way, she kicked off the black heels and pushed them to the side. She slumped down on her desk chair and opened her brand-new MacBook. With a smile, she opened the URL for her meeting.

When the windows popped up, she blew her flatscreen a kiss. "Hello, my most favorite people in the world." Let's hope Sam didn't hear that.

Santana sipped on her smoothie glass while Kurt blinked at her tiredly, but they were just as happy as her to see each other. Their schedules had been busy, they barely had time to videochat with each other.

"How's Tokyo, Kurt?", Mercedes smirked.

He yawned. "It's three in the morning here, and Blaine is snoring in his sleep. I think I have to start wearing earbuds again."

Santana laughed at him, and Kurt threw her a killing glance.

"And how's Auckland, Santana?"

Santana smirked in the virtual round. "Awesome. I just got up. Today's my day off, so I'm just chilling here at the beach." She switched to her tablet's back camera so that she could show them the sandy beach and the waves of the sea. It was a sight to behold, Mercedes was so jealous.

"How is the blonde bitch?", the Latina wanted to know.

Mercedes shook her head. "How often do I have to tell you that you cannot call her that? And she's fine, I guess. I haven't seen her in a while, she's quite busy."

They were talking about Quinn. And it was true that she was busy as the CEO of Fabray Inc. After Russell Fabray had been incarcerated with a life sentence (Mercedes might or might not have sent the audio to the police even though he had helped them turn off all the bombs that night), he was forced to cede his business to his children. Quinn's older siblings already had impressive careers in other domains and weren't interested in leading a firm with a more than bad reputation, so Quinn decided to whitewash Fabray Inc as well as the Fighters for Perfection. As soon as she had graduated college, she started changing the entire firm as well as its principles and goals. Instead of creating hybrids and doing illegal experimentations on humans and animals, Fabray Inc wanted to help those that had been infected. Quinn's team of scientists helped hybrids understand themselves while the trainers of Fabray Inc trained shapeshifters of all ages that wanted to get a better grip on their (newfound) powers.

One of the trainers was Travis Bancroft who had turned his entire life around after he had served his short time in prison and did community work. But Travis wasn't the only friend Quinn had recruited successfully, well, apart from Marley and Unique.

Even though Sam wasn't done with his studies, Quinn had convinced him to join her team of super competent scientists and doctors. His job was excellently paid, and Sam loved working there, knowing that he was actively helping young and old hybrids with his knowledge and his talent.

Every once in a while, Mercedes, Kurt, or Santana helped out at Fabray Inc as well, much to the joy of the younger shapeshifters that looked up to them. Even though Mercedes refused to take money for her short training sessions, she always got a generous amount of money on her bank account after each session she had given even though she had never given Quinn her Venmo.

Since there were so many promising young hybrids out there that wanted to protect the city, Mercedes hardly ever found herself putting on her Catgirl suit, neither did her friends.

Thanks to an old professor of his, Kurt got into a program for promising young photographers that worked on high caliber, prestigious projects. The drawback was that Kurt needed to move to Tokyo for a while. Blaine wasn't that happy when he found out, especially because their relationship had been going great.

After Majesty had unexpectedly died five years ago, Kurt had been an emotional wreck for weeks, or even months. Blaine had been there for him all this time, that's how they grew closer to each other, until they finally fell for each other. Mercedes had been rooting for those two for years, but Kurt wouldn't listen to her.

Anyway, when Kurt got the job offer in Tokyo and accepted, Blaine was devastated because he feared for their relationship. Well, until he and Kurt decided to get married spontaneously. It was a small wedding among only the two of them, but Mercedes was still pissed she couldn't get to witness the wedding of her best friend.

They never would have thought it would work out, but they were still going strong. Kurt went to Tokyo, and Blaine followed one year later. With his degree, he was able to get a job as an English teacher at an international elementary school. As far as Mercedes knew, they were now looking into adoption before they would return to the States in one year. When Santana had commented how two white dudes shouldn't be raising a kid of color, Kurt had retorted that they just wanted a child they could love, regardless of how he or she looked. Mercedes loved them.

As for Santana, she had a bright future too. When she had still been working at the Spotlight diner, she wondered whether she wanted to keep doing that for the rest of her life. Her answer was no, obviously, so she decided to take private lessons at NYADA to improve her acting skills and send audition tapes to random film studios.

She never would have thought that one of those studios would show interest in her. Three months later, she had the role of an impulsive Latina in a telenovela. Even though it was merely a recurring role, Santana had been hooked. She didn't even mind she had to move to New Zealand for that.

Other than Kurt and Blaine, she and Brittany had decided to put their relationship on hiatus. They were still a couple, but they could kiss and date whoever they wanted, Santana had explained to them. If she ever planned to come back, she and Britt would see whether they still were meant for each other, and if the answer was yes, they would get married.

Now, they were filming the episodes of the third season, and Santana had told them with sparkling eyes that the producers thought about promoting her to main character since her fanbase was growing constantly.

"One day, people are going to pay to kiss my ass", Santana explained proudly. "Just wait and see."

"Sure." Mercedes and Kurt exchanged skeptical glances. They were going to see about that.

"How are things going in New York, Cedes?", Kurt wanted to know.

Mercedes shrugged and smiled ambiguously. "Same old, Same old…"

The truth was that things were going great. After she was done with college, she had gotten an internship at a great firm that published a magazine that was popular among younger people. One year ago, she had been promoted to junior editor. Her stories were among the most read ones and her boss liked her works too. One day, Mercedes was going to establish herself and publish her very own magazine, but that wasn't going to happen that soon. She needed work experience first.

Her relationship with Sam was stronger than ever, she even thought about proposing to him in the near future. After all, their anniversary was going to be soon, that was going to be the best opportunity to make him hers forever.

She and her two best friends chatted for over an hour before they decided to say goodbye.

"I'm missing you guys. When are you going to come over?", she asked.

"Soon, Cedes", Kurt promised. "Very soon."

"Fuck this, I will never come back once I'm a celebrity", Santana laughed.

Mercedes gave her the finger with a smile before they closed the window.

When she returned to the living room, Sam hadn't moved one inch. She smiled at him. Gosh, how she loved that dork.

"Are Santana and Kurt okay?", Sam asked at this moment, his eyes still glued to the TV.

"Yeah. They are living their best lives. And we should, too." She slumped down next to him and snuggled up to him. "I love you, babe."

"Love you too." He kissed her on the cheek and wrapped his arm around her.

Without a doubt, this was the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. Friends came and went, but Sam would stay by her side forever.
